Abstract

The study of reporting verbs (RVs) is rarely done by Indonesian scholars. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate how Indonesian writers used the RVs in research article introductions published in low-ranking and medium-ranking ELT journals and investigating the differences of the usage of RVs used by them in both groups of journals. This research used a quantitative approach with a comparative design that investigated 40 research article introductions published in low-ranking (SINTA 6: Journal of English Language Education, and SINTA 5: The Journal of English Literacy Education) medium-ranking (SINTA 4: Journal of English Education and Teaching, and SINTA 3: ELT Forum: Journal of English Language Teaching) ELT journals in 2021. The data were taken by using the purposive sampling technique and they were analyzed by using the RVs’ framework of Francis et al. (1996). The results revealed that Indonesian writers of low-ranking and medium-ranking ELT journals used all of the RVs in research article introductions, but the most frequent RVs used by them was “argue verb”. Moreover, Indonesian writers of low-ranking ELT journals used more “find and think verbs”. Meanwhile, “the argue and show verbs” were more often used by Indonesian writers of medium-ranking ELT journals. These findings indicate the importance of using the RVs in writing the research article introductions for Indonesian writers in the field of English language teaching. The writers are suggested to use more “Argue Verbs, followed by “Find and Shows Verbs” when writing research article introductions. Abstract

Female students are still at risk of experiencing sexual harassment, which can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigated the impact of social support on PTSD female students who have been sexually harassed, as mediated by the resilience and religious coping. Out of a total of 1,439 female students who filed online self-reports, 170 female students reported being sexually harassed by lecturers, male students, and administrative officers. The PTSD checklist–civilian version (PCL-C), Multidimensional scale of perceived social support, brief resilience scale, and brief religious coping scale (RCOPE) were used to collect data. Partial least squares (PLS) modeling was used to test the developed hypothesis. This study found that social support, resilience, and religious coping all had an impact on PTSD. Furthermore, social support has an indirect effect on PTSD through resilience and religious coping. Because resilience and coping are mediators in recovering PTSD and that both can be intervened and modified, a training program specifically designed to improve both is needed to overcome the PTSD symptoms experienced by sexual harassment victims.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed at identifying the effect of Jigsaw Method on students’ reading comprehension in non-major English basic science students at University of Bengkulu. The sample of this research was 78 students from nursing class who took general English courses at Bengkulu University at Academic Year 2022/2023, the students were divided into experimental group (38) from class 2A Nursing and controlled group (40) from class 2B Nursing. The data were collected by using a valid and reliable test which consists of 30 items which represent 5 aspects of reading comprehension that is main idea, detail questions, references, inference, and vocabulary. Furthermore normality and homogeneity data has been checked before the data were analyzed statistically. The paired sample test results indicate that there was a significance improvement (0.000) in students reading comprehension in experimental group, but no significance improvement were found in controlled group (0.735). Furthermore, the result of independent sample test revealed that the reading comprehension achievement of the students in experimental group were significantly (0.000) better than that of those in controlled group. The result showed students who study using expert groups were able to discuss freely with one another. This result suggests that Jigsaw Method was appropriate to be implemented to improve reading comprehension for students in non-major English basic science.
