Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1) to explore strategies for teaching Indonesian and English to integrate local languages, 2) to identify the factors that support the revitalization of local languages in multilingual learning, 3) to determine the perceptions of teachers and students towards the use of local languages in language learning. The results showed that Indonesian language learning at SMP Satap Kajang was carried out in accordance with the applicable curriculum, namely the K-13 curriculum. Meanwhile, learning English has been taught to students since grade I. Local languages have never been taught to students because there is no direction or order from the Bulukumba district education office about what local languages to teach, who teaches them, and how to learn local languages. The observation also found that SMP 1 Satap Kajang had the opportunity to carry out learning the Konjo language. This is supported by the existence of several native teachers who master the Konjo language (one science teacher, social studies, Indonesian, mathematics, religious education, and one English teacher) the teacher also welcomes if multilingual integrated learning is carried out besides the majority of junior high school students. is a native of Kajang who in fact speaks Konjo in general, although most 92% of students know Konjo language. This potential needs to be utilized for learning local languages, especially Konjo language, as an introduction to regional languages and prevent extinction.

A great EFL Instructional material should suit the students’ needs. The students' and lecturers’ impression is a crucial part of designing instructional materials. This paper reports the needs analysis of the students and lecturers in order to get the information about the students' and lecturers’ impressions of the existing materials on Tourism subject at a private university in Makassar. This research investigated the students’ needs by applying the survey method. This survey method was used to determine whether the local object materials meet the students’ needs in learning the tourism subject from a different perspective. This research utilized interviews and a questionnaire that were distributed to students and lecturers. This research contributed to designing further Tourism Instructional Materials Based on Local Objects such as syllabi, lesson plans, and coursebooks for university students

Abstract

The goal of this study is to identify the requirements of students enrolled in the Civil Engineering Study Programme at a Papua university's General English Course during the second semester. A quantitative approach was taken for this investigation. Up to 200 students will participate in this survey. Questionnaire surveys were used to compile the data. Using a quantitative approach, the collected data is poured into a tabular data and matrix format for analysis. The findings show that raising students' consciousness of the importance of self-discipline in the classroom is a top priority. They must also participate actively in class in order to succeed. Students require content integration, English skills, and language aspects pertinent to course themes. In order to successfully complete the General English Course, students must have a firm grasp of all facets of the English language. In the framework of a General English Course, students will find the most success with the Student-Centred Learning Approach. Strategies like this include autonomy, curiosity, and self-control. Students have access to a wide variety of resources, including but not limited to those relating to civil engineering, general context, science and technology, and topics related to students' daily lives.

The study aims to find out whether or not the use of UVIOPro is effective to improve the students’ writing skill, particularly in terms of content, organization, and mechanics. This study applied a Quasi-Experimental design. The sample of this study was the second semester students of English Education department at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at University of Muhammadiyah Makassar in academic year 2014/2015. Therefore, the sample was determined with a cluster random sampling by applying a lottery technique. Hence, it consisted of 60 students divided in two groups. The data were collected through writing test, which consisted of pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS version 20. The findings show that the students’ writing skill, particularly in terms of content, organization, and mechanics improved after giving the treatments. The results of t-test analysis for the students’ score improvement in terms of content and organization in experimental and control groups reveals that Sig. (2-tailed) is less than (α) = 0.05. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of UVIOPro in teaching writing was effective to improve the students’ writing skill in terms of content, organization, and mechanics.
