Abstract

Textbook-based teaching commonly used in the ELT context in Indonesia results in a hard stimulation for students to speak more since the focus is reading skills. Activating peers' activities through English peer counselling in teaching speaking is one of the effective ways to promote students’ confidence and motivation in speaking. It is an activity conducted by peers that focuses on developing fundamental skills, especially speaking. This research aims to know the students' thoughts about English peer counselling toward their confidence and motivation in speaking. This research is qualitative research with a case study design. The researcher used a questionnaire as an instrument to collect the data. The questionnaire was given to 115 students of the English Education Program who joined the activity. The result shows that the first indicator reached 58,1%, which belongs to the neutral category. In comparison, the second indicator reached 91,4%. The final score for indicator one and indicator two was 79,8%. It indicates that students positively perceive English peer counselling to engage their speaking confidence and motivation. The activity encourages students to be more active in small conversations and discussions. They have better confidence in talking to their peers, which also gains their motivation. Similar research about English peer counselling for different skills, e.g. reading, writing, and listening, is highly possible to conduct.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes and motivations of students towards the CLIL class and the teacher's perception of the application of CLIL.The research method used is a case study which is included in the qualitative research design based on the type of data collected and analyzed. The participants of the study were 32 students in the eleventh grade of the Multimedia class, one English teacher and one Information Technology (IT) teacher at SMK NU Ma’arif Kudus. The data in this study were collected through questionnaires which were modified from the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). To analyze the data in the form of questionnaires and interview results, the writers referred to the qualitative data analysis technique, which consists of three steps, including reducing the data, displaying the data, as well as conclusion drawing/verifying the data. The result of the study showed that 70% of students argued that CLIL class contributed their learning experience, especially to learn English more in a different setting with additional knowledge about the subject content. Moreover, 18% of them stated that the class changed the setting of learning, and 12 % students thought that the class just focused to the language aspect such as grammar and vocabularies, not the content. It indicated that students had a positive attitude toward CLIL class. Similarly, teachers showed positive perceptions about the implementation of CLIL class because this program encouraged students to participate more in the class and the class activity.

Abstract

Practicing conversations or dialogues in various context or situation is as the essential aspect for students because it smoothen their skill in communication and their English mastery. Whenever people use language to interact, one of the things people are do- ing with it is establishing a relationship between them; between the speaker speaking now and the person who will probably speak next. It means, strategies in communicating put an important role to reach the goal of the interaction or the communication. This study is to identify the communication strategies of In- donesian university students, especially students of the English De- partment Education Faculty of Muria Kudus University and native speaker used in communication in natural conversation and to find out the possible factors cause the choice of  the strategies in the conversation. The method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are fourth semester students of English De- partment of Muria Kudus University and one native speaker. The data were obtained by inviting and asking the students and the na- tive speaker to have a conversation for around one hour. Then, the conversation was recorded by using camera. The recorded data were transferred into the printed one as a script. The data analysis was conducted in several ways, among other transcribing the recorded data, identifying each utterance and displaying the result in the table, classifying the utterances based on the type of strategies, and inter- preting the communication or the conversation. The results showed that there were 306 turns in the conver- sation between the students and the native speaker. The types of strategies used in the conversations were Circumlocution (C) for 38.98 % (23), followed by Language Switch (LS) for 15.3 % (9) and Topic Avoidance (TA) for 14.6 % (8), Literal Translation (LT) for 6.8 % (4), Mime (M) for 8.5 % (5), Word Coinage (WC) and Mes- sage Abandonment (MA) for 6.8 % (4), Appeal for Assistance (AA) for 5.6 % (3), and Approximation (A) for 3.39 % (2). The last find- ing showed that there were two main factors that cause the choice of the strategies in the conversations. They were proficiency of the speaker and features of the communicative situation. In the use of communication strategies, both students of Eng- lish Department Muria Kudus University and the native speaker try to have a relative balance of power relation without the domination of one person to others. Some factors which cause the use of the strategies are lack of meaning, social use aspect, speech, voice, and fluency. To improve students’ strategies in communication, they should practice their English more, so their speaking and their strategies will be improved. Besides, lecturers also should apply the contextual teaching in which the environment and culture are inserted into the topic.

Abstract

The opportunity to learn English should be given to all learners since English has been widely spread globally. Learners should be exposed to English as early as possible and be prevalent for all, including disabled students. Students who need special treatment in learning should also get equal opportunity to study, especially English. One type of disabled students who need special attention in English learning is those who have autism. Autistic students are in need of special treatment learning English since they have more difficulties in perceiving and producing language code. Therefore, English teachers should have awareness of the characteristics of autistic students concerning speech difficulties. It is highly necessary for autistic students to have intensive therapy and in other sides, they also have a right to learn foreign languages like English. Speech therapy as one of the therapies used to assist the autistic students in producing language codes is potentially in line with English learning. In this case, speech therapy can be done while teaching English to autistic students because speech therapy often requires graded language teaching.    This study focuses on how speech therapy is integrated with English teaching for autistic students in Second Grader of Junior High School students to improve their English proficiency and speech competence as well. The study is an ongoing classroom action research conducted in SMP Sunan Muria in Kudus Regence, Central Java, Indonesia.

Abstract

Teaching English in High School level (Junior High School and Senior High School) is more exposed in reading and writing skills for the target of final examination (UN).Consequently, students need to sharpen their reading and writing ability. It also must be done by students in a non-formal Senior High School known as KejarPaket C without any exception. Improving reading skill can be done through doing more reading activities in various types of text. This activity will add students’ vocabularies and their knowledge about more topics of the texts. Besides, the way teachers deliver the material deals with techniques, methods, or strategies also contributes in students’ progress of reading skill. Seeing the background of students in KejarPaket C who have various backgrounds and mostly are from low economic level or less motivated students for studying, teachers should concern more in exposing the material through the appropriate and effective technique. Carter (2001) brings an idea about a technique which teacher and students are taking place in dialogue and it resulted in students learning how to construct meaning when they are placed in must-read situations (tests or assignments). This was experimental research which was conducted to find the difference of students’ reading proficiency taught by using a technique called Reciprocal. The study found that the technique contributed significantly in improving students’ reading proficiency after they were taught by using Reciprocal. In brief, Reciprocal technique is an effective way to improve students’ reading proficiency.
