Abstract

A large and growing body of literature has investigated students’ reading attitude and motivation either in elementary or secondary levels. Unfortunately, there remains a paucity of similar study in the context of santri or students in Islamic boarding school. This study, therefore, examined the reading attitude and motivation dimensions among santris. Three hundred and nineteen students at pesantren-based senior high schools in Yogyakarta Special Region province participated in this study by completing reading attitude survey adapted from McKenna et al. (1995; 2012) and motivational reading questionnaire (MRQ) adapted from Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed that reading attitude was represented by two dimensions as suggested by the finding in previous studies. On the other hand, instead of eleven, only seven reading motivation dimensions manifested in this present study. Reliability coefficients for all the subscales were acceptable. Finally, correlations analysis revealed that each dimension of both reading attitude and motivation were correlated positively.

Abstract

University Libraries are sources of electronic resources that are accessible to users. The literature search results show that few studies discuss electronic resource procurement in Indonesian libraries. This article aimed to determine the procurement of electronic resources collections at the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) Library. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research method conducted at the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library. Data collection techniques used structured interviews with seven informants. The analysis results showed seven main findings in the procurement process for collecting electronic resources: the target, budgeting, user specifications, single sign-on authentication, the right team, content duplication, and communication with vendors. The library analyzed the contents of electronic resources to be purchased. Libraries use Ministry and Institutional Work Plan and Budget (RKAKL) funds in their budgeting. Subscriptions to electronic resources are specially for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Single Sign-On authentication system used is EZproxy. The Procurement team consists of the head of the library, deputy head of the library, technical service coordinator, and general reference coordinator. The duplication-checking process is carried out based on the subject. In the communication process with vendors, the team has coordinated well. The research findings contribute to Indonesia's electronic resources procurement management practices.

Abstract

A considerable amount of studies has explored gender differences in reading attitude and motivation among students in both elementary and secondary school levels. However, none of them is concerned with English reading attitude and motivation among santri or students living at Islamic boarding school in which gender segregation is applied. This study attempts to investigate santri’s reading attitude and reading motivation based on their gender. Three hundred and nineteen students at pesantren-based senior high schools in Yogyakarta Special Region province participated in the study by completing both reading attitude questionnaires and motivational reading questionnaire (MRQ). The results showed that there were significant differences among female and male santris in terms of reading attitude and motivation. The independent sample t-test revealed that female students reported statistically significant higher attitude in both academic and recreational reading than male students. Similarly, female students also reported higher reading motivation in three dimensions of MRQ, i.e. reading involvement, importance of reading, and competition in reading than male student. Likewise, regression analysis showed that gender could predict santri’s reading attitude and motivation. This study, therefore, confirmed a consistent finding from the previous studies revealing that female students had higher reading attitude and motivation than male students.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning has been studied over three decades in various subjects and schools, This meta-analysis study aimed to synthesize the most recent findings of the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL), specifically on students’ mathematical reasoning ability. The data were obtained from relevant primary studies published in national and international journals or proceedings during 2014-2021. Ten effect sizes from eight studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were analyzed using a systematic review and meta-analysis. JASP 0.15.0.0 software was used to measure the formula of Hedges g to determine the effect size. The result showed that PBL has a strong effect on students’ mathematical reasoning ability (gRE = 2.062, 95% CI [1.436, 2.689], p 0.001) when compared to traditional learning. The results of the analysis of moderator variables revealed that publication year (Qb = 5.460, p 0.05) and sampling technique (Qb = 9.032, p 0.05) had significant effect on the effectiveness of PBL on students’ mathematical reasoning ability, while educational levels (Qb = 1.649, p 0.05), sample size (Qb = 2.081, p 0.05) and publication sources (Qb = 0.573, p 0.05) did not show any significant effect. The result of this study provides important information for further meta-analysis study and the implementation of PBL in mathematics learning.

Abstract

Numerous studies have been conducted on the item test analysis in English test. However, investigation on the characteristics of a good test of English final semester test is still rare in several districts in East Java. This research sought to examine the quality of the English final semester test in the academic year of 2018/2019 in Ponorogo. A total of 151 samples in the form of students’ answers to the test were analysed based on item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractors’ effectiveness using Quest program. This descriptive quantitative research revealed that the test does not have good proportion among easy, medium, and difficult item. In the item discrimination, the test had 39 excellent items (97.5%) which meant that the test could discriminate among high and low achievers. Besides, the distractors could distract students since there were 32 items (80%) that had effective distractors. The findings of this research provided insights that item analysis became important process in constructing test. It related to find the quality of the test that directly affects the accuracy of students’ score.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the knowledge of ICT integration among the students of the English Language Education Study Program at a particular university in Yogyakarta. By employing the quantitative method, this ex-post facto research involved 70 English Department students who had taken microteaching as respondents in a survey to gather the data using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was taken from the model developed by one of the researchers based on the TPACK framework. There are five domains in the questionnaire. Four domains measure TPACK perceptions: Technological Knowledge (TK), Technological Content Knowledge (TCK), Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). One domain measures the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their ICT-related learning experiences. Demographic questions are included to identify the characteristics of the respondents in order to understand gender differences or relationships between teachers who have access to technologies at home and those who do not. The closed-ended questions applied a five-point Likert-type scale ranging from 1=strongly disagree to 5=strongly agree. Correspondingly, it contains one open-ended question in the TPACK domain. Descriptive analysis and MANOVA were conducted for the quantitative data analysis. The result of this study showed that the pre-service students possess a high self-confidence in the application of TK (Technological Knowledge), TPK (Technological Pedagogical Knowledge), and TCK (Technological Content Knowledge). However, their TPACK appears to need further development. The results from MANOVA showed that the pre-service teachers’ related learning experiences significantly differed by the students’ gender, with male students reporting more experiences than female students.

Abstract

Evidence suggests that autonomous language learning has been one of the primary areas of interest in the field of English Language Teaching due to its fundamental roles in empowering students in taking the responsibility for their learning both in and out of the classroom. This study set out to investigate the structural relationships among the dimensions of English student teacher perception towards their roles and strategies in promoting autonomous language learning and professional autonomy. A total of 357 student teachers of English from Indonesia participated in this study. Eligibility criteria required the participants to have taken courses on English Language Teaching Methodology to ensure their understanding about the concepts of autonomous language learning and their future roles and strategies in fostering and promoting autonomous language learning. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with MPlus 7.2 was used to test the models proposed in this study. The findings showed that the dimensions of student teacher roles and strategies in promoting autonomous language learning and professional autonomy were weakly to moderately related to one another, suggesting how teacher education institutions need to provide sufficient trainings on the concept and practice of autonomous language learning. Several noteworthy findings are summarized and discussed thoroughly in the discussion section.
