Abstract

This article mainly explores Mandarin Oriental Singapore’s Commercial Text among New Students: A Commercial Material Developments. This study uses participatory action research (PAR). The result indicates thatcommercial texts in the classroom student had autonomy in making a decision on particular lexico-grammatical resources they need to learn more or discuss with their pair, small group, and whole class discussion. They learn not only by locally produced materials but also commercial materials. These commercial materials drove them drawing on observation and reflective data, as the students engaged in meaning-making activities, they analyzed a variety of texts they read and shared the outcome of the analysis with their peers. This meaning-making engagement allowed them to understand and interpret texts in new and varied ways (Hodgson-Drysdale, 2014) so that relationship between content and language was evident.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out the translation technique used in Indonesian subtitle, especially for the particularization of “Insidious 4: The Last Key”. This study used descriptive qualitative approach with document analysis since the data consists largely of words. The data source of this study is “Insidious 4: The Last Key” movie. The data are the subtitle of “Insidious 4: The Last Key” movie containing compound- complex sentences taken from www.subscene.com. The finding revealed that they are 53 utterences translated using particularization technique which are divided into 3, they are : (1) Particularization in Word; (2) Particularization in Phrase; and (3) Particularization in Sentence. Particularization in Phrase is divided into 4, that are: (1) Noun Phrase; (2) Verbial Phrase; (3) Prepositional Phrase; and (4) Adverbial Phrase. Keywords: Translation technique, Particularization, SubtitleABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam subtitle film berbahasa Indonesia, terutama untuk partikularisasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis dokumen karena data sebagian besar terdiri dari kata-kata. Data adalah subtitle dari film Insidious 4: The Last Key yang berisi kalimat majemuk yang diambil dari www.subscene.com. Temuan ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada 53 ucapan yang diterjemahkan menggunakan teknik partikularisasi yang dibagi menjadi 3, yaitu: (1) Partikulatisasi dalam kata; (2) Partikulasi dalam Frasa; dan (3) Partikulasi dalam Kalimat. Partikulasi dalam Frasa dibagi menjadi 4, yaitu: (1) Frasa Kata benda; (2) Frasa Verbial; (3) Frasa Preposisi; dan (4) Frasa Adverbia.Kata kunci: Teknik penerjemahan, Partikularisasi, Subtitle

Abstract

This study aims to describe the translation shift in the novel Woman at Point Zero by Sherif Hetata into Perempuan di Titik Nol translated by Amir Sutarga. Data were collected from those book both in English and Indonesian translation which contained four types of translation shift based on Newmark’s theory by applying descriptive-qualitative study. The result of the research shows that the translation shift found in novel Woman at Point Zero consist of four types which are:  the first type of shift with 37 data (30%), the second types of shift with 21 data (17%), the third type of shift with 46 data (38%), and the fourth type of shift with 18 data (15%).

Abstract

There is little research available on analyzing error translation in "Pooh's Neighborhood" Storybooks Children translated by an amateur translator Wahidah Muriska. This paper aims to analyze what kind of error that the translator made in the storybook. Error in translating not only causing misinformation in the target language but also appearing ambiguity into the readers perspective. After the researchers analyze the translation result, the researchers found some errors in words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The detail errors found in theose translations are modal, preposition, noun phrase, verb phrase, dependent and independent clause. The translator got difficulties in translating clause and phrase because most of error found in clause and phrase. The results show that error translation may appear because the translator lacks of reading whole text of expert translators. In the other opinion, the errors happen because the translator does not mastering the particular part of speechs in which error appear yet.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to classify the accuracy in translating cartoon  from  English  to Indonesian  subtitles,  to  determine  the  accuracy  and readability of translating English to Indonesian subtitles of Tayo Cartoon movie by the amateur translator. This research is a descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research are utterances or sentences in subtitle movies of the bilingual edition, both English and Indonesian. Meanwhile, the source of the data is Tayo Cartoon movie. In analyzing the data, researchers used a comparison method to compare Source Language (SL) and Target Language (TL). This research shows that the subtitle made by the subtitling class students as the amateur translator acceptable for the children with some reconciliation from SL into TL. In conclusion, it can be concluded that the translation quality of Tayo Cartoon movie by the subtitling class students as the amateur translator is accurate.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the analysis of translation strategies of slang language as employed in the movie entitled “The Social Network”. This paper analyzes the translation strategies of the slang language from English into Indonesia from the movie entitled “The Social Network”. Baker’s translation strategies were used in this paper in order to analyze the data of this paper.  The study findings reveal that there are 30 slang words used in this movie, and the subtitler adopted five translation strategies by Baker for translating the slang words in this movie. The analysis also reveals that most of the slang words in the movie have related words with the target language. There are no English slang words that were translated into Indonesia slang words in the movie. The subtitler mostly used the strategies for translating the English slang words into Indonesian words that have a similar expressive meaning. It can be interpreted as a result of the different culture of both countries that makes different slang words.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of learning motivation and intellectual intelligence on students’ learning achievement in PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/ Islamic Religious Education). This study applied a quantitative approach using survey technique. The population of this study was students of class VIII MTs (Madrasah Tsanawaiyah/ Islamic Junior High School) Muhammadiyah Gemolong and the sample was determined randomly. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods, validity tests, reliability tests, and multiple regression analysis. The results show that there was a significant effect of both intellectual intelligence and learning motivation on student’ learning achievement in PAI with Fcount 10.013 > Ftable 0.000; significance value 2 and 2.66 with α = 0.05 and 0.01.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the used of discursive creation technique of English to Indonesian subtitle in Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets movie. This research is descriptive qualitative method. Data of this research are utterances or sentences in subtitle movie of bilingual edition, both English and Indonesian. While, the source of data of this research is Harry Potter: The Chamber of Secrets movie. The researchers only used one data source, it was document. In analyzing the data, the researchers used comparison method to compare between the SL and TL that were analyzed. The result of this research shows that discursive analysis divided into three catogories of language unit, they are word 23%, phrase 20%, and sentence 57%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translator has many errors in the sentence translated because he choose the easy sentence in order to make viewer understand the subtitle.

Abstract

This study sets out to describe the translation strategy and the impacts of the strategy to the accuracy and acceptability of slang words translation in “The Kissing Booth” movie subtitle. The research data were collected from “The Kissing Booth” movie file along with the subtitles, both in English and Indonesian. The data were all slang words found in “The Kissing Booth” movie dialogue and subtitle. This study employed descriptive qualitative method to analyze the slang words from the dialogue in the movie. The result of the research shows that the slang words found in the movie are divided into 8 (eight) categories which are: Euphemism with 4 (four) data, Dysphemism with 11 (eleven) data, Typical in Spoken Language with 8 (eight) data, Typical in Informal Situation with 11 (eleven) data, Metaphorical Utterance with 5 (five) data, Proverb with 2 (two) data, Untranslatability with 4 (four) data, and Neutral Syntactic Level with 5 (five) data.
