Abstract

WhatsApp (WA) is one of the most popular messaging applications which can be accessed by using mobile phone and Personal Computer (PC). Nowadays, most people prefer to use this application for communicating with other. In education field, WhatsApp also give beneficial features such as text, call, send video, audio, links, location, document, and pictures. This research is aimed at observing WA which is tailored to support English Language Learning (ELL) activities.  For gathering data, this study applied case study using observation and questionnaire as main instrument.  A case study is drawn from participants of 5th semester students at English Department Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. It is found that WA was significant in helping ELL activities since it was used by both teachers and students for ELL related activities. The results are: 1) In the field of technical advantages, WA provides simple operation; 2) WA can enhance learning opportunities outside classroom for students.  In brief, WA facilitated ELL activities as an effort toward MALL (Mobile-Assisted Language Learning) implementation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on young learners English Language Teaching (ELT) at Panti Asuhan Yauma. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative. In this research the researcher describes the activities carried out by teachers and students by using TPR method. The data resources are from teacher and students in Panti Asuhan Yauma Jakarta. The class consists of 30 students which their ages were around 5 to 11 years old. The data collected through observation in learning activities. The instruments were pre-test and post-test with 2 (two) criterion being assessed, namely vocabulary and comprehension. They were divided into 5 (five) elements such as accuracy of word, understanding each word, word choice, understanding the meaning, and speaking easily. The results showed that there was an improvement in vocabulary score about 27.40 and comprehension score about 28.77. The research finding first showed that when using the TPR method children enjoyed and were also very active in learning English. The researcher hopes that the study contributes to the activities of teaching and learning English, especially teaching English for young learners. It was proved by the score from pre-test and post-test.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has brought many significant aspects of human life, such as health, social, economy, and education as well. Temporarily, most government around the world have closed educational institution in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The Indonesian government appeals all elements of education to adapt and continue learning activities through online learning. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as the newest learning way in the language education where applications or websites are used to facilitate students learning activities. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has been studied years by researchers in its connection with education related activities. This research will focus on its main purposes,that is teachers’ perceptions in mobile learning especially English language learning classroom activities. The method of the research was quantitative method which used 70 English teachers as research object. The data were collected through a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire. The research found; the teachers’ majority had positive perception on the usage of MALL to support classroom activities, especially in learning English language in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on early childhood English Language Teaching (ELT) at Panti Asuhan Yauma Jakarta and to know the students’ response after learning English using TPR method. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative. In this research the researcher describes the activities carried out by teachers and students by using TPR method. The data resources are from teacher and students in Panti Asuhan Yauma Jakarta . The class consist of 6 students which their age was around  5 to 11 years old. The data collected through observation and interview both teacher and students. The instruments were pre-test and post-test with 2 (two) criterion being assessed, namely vocabulary and comprehension. They were divided into 6 (six) elements such as accuracy of word, understanding each word, word choice, understanding the meaning, speaking easily,and intonation. The results showed that there was any improvement on vocabulary score about 26.16 and comprehension score about 27.16. The research finding firstly showed the TPR method was able to be applied to children because they enjoyed and were also very active in learning English. The researcher hopes that the study contributes to the activities of teaching and learning English, especially teaching English for early childhood. It was proved by the score from pre-test and post-test.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan, wawasan serta kompetensi bagi para santri, terutama Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini berfokus pada pelatihan tata Bahasa Inggris dengan jenis materi yang disesuaikan dengan karakter dan kebutuhan para santri. Teknik pembelajaran tata bahasa yang digunakan pada pelatihan tata Bahasa Inggris ini adalah dengan menggunakan teknik Dictogloss (dikte). Dictogloss adalah aktivitas dikte kelas di mana peserta didik diharuskan merekonstruksi teks pendek dengan mendengarkan dan mencatat kata-kata kunci, yang kemudian digunakan sebagai basis untuk membuat sebuah kalimat lengkap. Pelatihan ini diikuti oleh 30 santri dengan kisaran usia 10 sampai dengan 13 tahun. Dikarenakan masih dalam keadaan pandemic Covid-19 maka pelatihan ini dilaksanakan secara daring yaitu dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi Zoom. Hasil yang diharapkan adalah para santri dapat membuat kalimat dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan tata Bahasa yang baik dan benar

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan keahlian kepada masyarakat betapa pentingnya komunikasi berbicara menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan difokuskan pada percakapan Bahasa Inggris sehari-hari yang dilakukan di Yayasan Darussalam, Depok Timur. Metode penelitian yang dipakai dalam riset ini adalah berbasis kualitatif deskriptif dengan tehnik role-play. Data berasal dari peserta pengabdian masyarakat yang berusia antara 13 hingga 17 tahun. Skala pengukuran menggunakan level kemampuan berbicara dari level terendah 1 hingga level tertinggi 6. Hasil yang didapatkan dari riset ini sebanyak 1 peserta pada level 4, 9 peserta pada level 3, 5 peserta pada level 2, 2 peserta pada level 1.

Abstract

Kurangnya rasa percaya diri dan perbendaharaan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris menjadi masalah utama bagi hampir semua orang di Indonesia terutama para pelajar dan remaja dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Tim kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang merupakan salah satu wujud Tri Dharma perguruan tinggi, oleh karennya menyelenggarakan kegiatan pelatihan yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan esensial phrasal verbs. Sebanyak 30 peserta yang merupakan remaja Mesjid Baitul Halim Jakarta Selatan mengikuti kegiatan ini secara tatap muka langsung. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab dan latihan bicara atau dialog. Dengan diselenggarakannya kegiatan ini, diharapkan adanya peningkatan kepercayaan diri dan perbendaharaan kosa kata dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, para peserta diharapkan dapat mempraktikan materi yang diberikan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari agar kemampuan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris mereka dapat meningkat menjadi lebih baik.

Abstract

Literature and society is relating each other. A literary work, such as novel, emerges from society and social condition. A Study in Scarlet is a famous novel about detective story. Its author’s life, surely has an important role to this novel. The objective of this research is to analyze socialogical condition of Conan Doyle. This analysis takes the data from novel A Study in Scarlet written by Conan Doyle. The supported theories collected through library and internet research. The researchers uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing this novel. Result of this analysis are, first, sociological background of Conan Doyle are; a 28 years old man, live in London, study of medicine, live good in the middle class of economic and work as a surgeon and researchers. Second, Conan Doyle’s reason in writing this novel are for beauty, foraging and imitate other’s behavior. Third, Conan Doyle’s social condition relates to the setting of this novel. Setting of place mostly in London, setting of time commonly in war time and setting of social concerns with war condition Abstrak Sastra dan kehidupan bermasyarakat berkaitan satu sama lain. Sebuah karya sastra, seperti baru, muncul dari masyarakat dan kondisi sosial. A Study in Scarlet adalah sebuah novel terkenal tentang cerita detektif. Kisah nyata penulis pasti memiliki peran penting untuk novel ini. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kondisi socialogical dari Conan Doyle. Analisis ini mengambil data dari novel A Study in Scarlet ditulis oleh Conan Doyle. teori yang didukung dikumpulkan melalui perpustakaan dan penelitian internet. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam menganalisis novel ini. Hasil analisis ini adalah pertama, latar belakang sosiologis Conan Doyle adalah; 28 tahun pria tua, tinggal di London, studi kedokteran, hidup baik di kelas menengah ekonomi dan bekerja sebagai dokter bedah dan penulis. Kedua, alasan Conan Doyle dalam menulis novel ini adalah untuk kecantikan, mencari makan, dan meniru perilaku lain. Ketiga, kondisi sosial Conan Doyle berkaitan dengan pengaturan novel ini. Pengaturan tempat sebagian besar di London, pengaturan waktu yang biasa dalam waktu perang dan pengaturan dari kepedulian sosial dengan kondisi perang.

Abstract

The objective of this research is describing on translation procedures which used for the government and covert institution terms in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation movie subtitle by the official subscene translator. Translation procedures are the inseparable aspects within translation process which determine their end-result delivered for target reader rightly. The researchers applied Newmark’s theory for subtitle analysis. By the process of analysis, it was found that there were 16 of 18 types of translation procedures which could be categorized into two specifications. The frequently procedures found were literal translation, transference, modulation, and shift or tranposition. In addition, the relevant procedures of specific terms were cultural equivalence, functional equivalence, through translation, and paraphrase.

Abstract

This writer discusses about an analysis of figurative language in NF rap songs on the album The search. The purpose of this research to find the types of figurative language and the most dominant types of figurative language in NF songs on the album The search. This research applied descriptive qualitative analysis as the research type. The data was taken from the lyrics of NF songs on the album The Search. The entire data is analyzed through describing object, collecting data, analyzing and then conclusion. The writer found sixty-two figurative languages used in eighteen songs on the album The Search. There are twenty hyperboles (32,26%), sixteen paradoxes (25,81%), ten personifications (16,13%), seven similes (11,29%), six metaphors (9,68%), one metonymy (1,61%) one symbolism (1,61%) and one irony (1,61%). The most dominant figurative language used in the eighteen songs is hyperbole with twenty (32,26%) used. The conclusion figurative language is another way of conveying meaning differently. hyperbole is the most used because NF uses a lot of exaggerated words to express what he feels. NF uses emotional and honest rapping to describe his feelings, giving listeners a strong and meaningful connection to his life story.
