Abstract

The purpose of the study was to see how successful skimming and scanning techniques are at improving students' reading comprehension. This study employed a pre-test and post-test control group design. The research subjects were first-year students from SMP Unggulan Negeri 1 Pulau Morotai. There were 66 students in all, divided into two groups of equal size: an experimental group and a control group. The results show that students or (33) got deficient levels in the control class. After the students were taught by using the conventional method, there was no improvement. While in the experimental group pre-test results showed that 100 percent of students (33) scored 0-54. After skimming and scanning techniques was applied the students’ score in reading comprehension were higher, this can be seen in the figure, from 100 percent of students (33) 64 percent students who got poor level (0-54), 24 percent students got moderate level, while in the range of scores from 70 to 84, there were 12 students. From these findings, skimming and scanning techniques were clearly beneficial in improving students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effects of crossword puzzles on the First-Grade students’ vocabulary of SMP Negeri 1 Morotai Island in the academic year 2020/2021. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental research design. Questionnaires and tests were used as research instruments for data collection purposes. 52 First-Grader students were randomly selected to participate in the research process upon which a pre-test, treatment, and post-test were conducted. The results showed that the average score obtained by students during the pre-test was 45.28. The researcher then applied the crossword puzzles during the treatment process to see their effects on the student’s vocabulary. When the post-test was conducted, the students' average scores significantly rose to 76.19. This increase was found across aspects of vocabulary such as nouns, spelling, pronunciation, and understanding of the contextual meaning of the vocabulary in sentences. Thus, it can be concluded that Crossword Puzzles increase the First-Grade Students’ vocabulary of SMP Negeri Unggulan Pulau Morotai.

Abstract

This research was conducted to see if there was a development in speaking skill after applying the debate technique ( British parliamentary system) to the students at Universitas Pasifik Morotai. The researcher was used quantitative research as the method. The samples of the research were 32 students which consist of 1st and 3rd years English The research was used pre-experimental and used one-group pre-test post-test design ; purposive sampling to get the sample. Based on the findings showed that the mean in pre-test were 12.22 and the mean of the post-test were 13.03 it means that debate technique can improve students speaking skill at Universitas Pasifik Morotai.
