Abstract

This study aimed to know students' opinions about the implementations of asynchronous learning (Screencast-O-Matic and Google-Form apps) during COVID-19, to identify the advantages and disadvantages were produced by these devices, as well as to analyze how big the students' confidence on this type of learning when implemented in the rural area. The subject of this study consisted of 45 respondents from the English education study program. They spread in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8thsemester. Qualitative descriptive students were used in this study. Among the questionnaire, open-ended questions and interviews were the methods to collect the data. The results of this study indicated these platforms had shown various obstacles. Over half of respondents criticize that limited internet access was one of the most significant restrictions when implementing asynchronous learning (Screencast-O-Matic and Google-Form apps). Although Screencast-O-Matic and Google-Form had some barriers in their virtual class, they provide more advantages. Many respondents believed they have all these advantages compared to the limits. The majority of respondents argued that it facilitated EFL students to increase acquisitions of language software that could contribute to students' ICT capabilities in particular.

Abstract

One language that is a communication tool in various parts of the world is English; English has become a language that must be mastered by the community, especially students. However, not everyone can easily speak English. The purpose of this research is to know the level of anxiety when they speak in English at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan students. This research uses a qualitative method. One hundred and twenty seven students were selected as the participants of the questionnaire; the tool used for this study was adapted from Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The result of this study was showed that the majority of the students (n=103) were found students had a moderate level of anxiety, one student had a very high level of anxiety and thirteen students were found to had a high level of anxiety. The level of anxiety by dimensions, such as the Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) ranks third. Meanwhile, Communication Apprehension (CA) and Test Anxiety (TA) are significantly dominant performance anxieties.

Abstract

This study is to know the teachers' perception of adopting a virtual classroom during a pandemic and discover the conveniences, obstacles, and suggestions when e-learning is being carried out. Sort of this research was qualitative using descriptive method. The method of choosing respondents used convenience sampling. Data collection used questionnaires and open-ended questions. Junior and senior high school teachers in North Maluku were respondents in this research. The subjects of this study were 92 respondents. To analyze the data using SPSS 17. Based on the finding, it found that majority of the teachers used several platforms for online home study during the lockdown. Either Single types of platforms or mixed e-learning was used to gain maximum results in instructional activity. Nine list advantages were addressed on e-learning; in the contrary, it also produced seven barriers. Additionally, the educators offered attractive and innovative ideas to tackle numerous obstacles among educators, students, and educational institutions

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa penghubung yang digunakan di seluruh dunia, kemampuan untuk bisa berbicara Bahasa Inggris adalah prioritas utama dari banyak Bahasa yang dpelajari oleh para pelajar saat ini. Salah satu faktor yang menghalangi siswa untuk Berbicara Bahasa Inggris ialah kecemasan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor kecemasan apa saja yang dialami oleh mahasiswa semester tiga Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta di lingkungan belajar Bahasa Inggris berdasarkan pandangan mereka. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini ialah kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil observasi di dalam kelas, enam mahasiswa dipilih sebagai sebagai responden yang diwawancarai secara mendalam. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui observasi kelas dan wawancara. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa faktor kecemasan yang menyebabkan mahasiswa tidak mampu berbicara Bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas ialah malu, tidak percaya diri, takut membuat kesalahan, masalah tata bahasa dan kekurangan kosakata.

Abstract

Penelitian in dilakukan untuk mengetahui kesalahan urutan kata dan faktor-faktor kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa bahasa Inggris tahun ketiga Universitas Pasifik Morotai. Metode analisa deskripsi di gunakan dalam teknik analisis data. Subjek dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 5 mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris tahun ke-tiga di Universitas Pasifik Morotai. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris tahun ke-tiga Universitas Pasifik Morotai melakukan kesalahan tatabahasa dalam urutan kata determiner, ordinative, epithet, classifier, dan head (DOECH). Kesalahan yang sering dilakukan dari salah penempatan untuk DOECH adalah kesalahan ephitet dari semua jawaban dari responden yaitu 25. Di posisi ke-dua yaitu ordinativr dengan jumlah salah penempatan yaitu 12, kemudian di ikuti oleh determiner, classifier, dan head dengan jumlah salah penempatan masing-masing sebesar 10. Selain itu, eror pada kata kerja mencapai posisi tertinggi dengan jumlah error sebesar 28.

Abstract

Pupils at the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Morotai have different personality types, most of whom often feel anxious when speaking. This research is aimed at finding out whether or not introvert and extrovert personality types have correlation with pupils’ level of anxiety in speaking English. This research is quantitative in nature, using causal- correlative method. The population of the research was all pupils in the seventh grade of SMA N 1 Pulau Morotai. The total number of population was 140 pupils but 105 pupils were selected to participate as the sample of this research. In choosing the sample, the researchers applied Krejchie- Morgan’s table with 5% error rate. In terms of data analysis, the researchers took two instrument tests; namely personality test and level of anxiety during English speaking test. To know the personality types of the pupils, the researchers utilized Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) test. Questionnaire of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), on the other hand, was used to know the students’ level of anxiety. Result of hypothesis testing analysis shows that there was no significant difference in the level of speaking anxiety between the pupils who have introvert and extrovert personality types. The value of sig 0.264 was found to be higher than α = 0.05.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian ini dilakukan di Desa Hapo, Kabupaten Pulau Morotai. Terdapat empat kegiatan yang dilaksanakan yaitu, pembuatan monumen podiki de prigaho, pembuatan papan nama rumah, literasi pomadoto, dan pentas seni budaya. Kegiatan ini dimulai dari bulan april hingga juni 2021. Secara garis besar, berbagai program yang direncanakan bersifat fisik maupun non fisik serta beberapa program kerja tambahan dan insidental telah terlaksana dengan baik. Dari Berbagai kegiatan-kegiatan yang telah terlaksana diatas dapat disimpulkan bahwa program kerja kelompok selama kegiatan pengabdian ini yang dilaksanakan sebagian besar merupakan jenis program kegiatan fisik, walaupun dalam pelaksanakannya juga melibatkan jenis program kegiatan Non-fisik. Secara garis besar berbagai program yang telah direncanakan, baik program kelompok terlaksana dengan baik terhadap program-program yang dilaksanakan. Dari sisi yang lain, sambutan dan 90 partisipasi dari masyarakat sangat baik terhadap program-program yang telah dilaksanakan. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari keikutsertaan warga, baik dari kalangan Pemerintah Desa, orang tua, pemuda-pemudi, maupun anak-anak yang sangat antusiasi selama pelaksanaakan program pengabdian.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to see how successful skimming and scanning techniques are at improving students' reading comprehension. This study employed a pre-test and post-test control group design. The research subjects were first-year students from SMP Unggulan Negeri 1 Pulau Morotai. There were 66 students in all, divided into two groups of equal size: an experimental group and a control group. The results show that students or (33) got deficient levels in the control class. After the students were taught by using the conventional method, there was no improvement. While in the experimental group pre-test results showed that 100 percent of students (33) scored 0-54. After skimming and scanning techniques was applied the students’ score in reading comprehension were higher, this can be seen in the figure, from 100 percent of students (33) 64 percent students who got poor level (0-54), 24 percent students got moderate level, while in the range of scores from 70 to 84, there were 12 students. From these findings, skimming and scanning techniques were clearly beneficial in improving students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effects of crossword puzzles on the First-Grade students’ vocabulary of SMP Negeri 1 Morotai Island in the academic year 2020/2021. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental research design. Questionnaires and tests were used as research instruments for data collection purposes. 52 First-Grader students were randomly selected to participate in the research process upon which a pre-test, treatment, and post-test were conducted. The results showed that the average score obtained by students during the pre-test was 45.28. The researcher then applied the crossword puzzles during the treatment process to see their effects on the student’s vocabulary. When the post-test was conducted, the students' average scores significantly rose to 76.19. This increase was found across aspects of vocabulary such as nouns, spelling, pronunciation, and understanding of the contextual meaning of the vocabulary in sentences. Thus, it can be concluded that Crossword Puzzles increase the First-Grade Students’ vocabulary of SMP Negeri Unggulan Pulau Morotai.

Abstract

This research was conducted to see if there was a development in speaking skill after applying the debate technique ( British parliamentary system) to the students at Universitas Pasifik Morotai. The researcher was used quantitative research as the method. The samples of the research were 32 students which consist of 1st and 3rd years English The research was used pre-experimental and used one-group pre-test post-test design ; purposive sampling to get the sample. Based on the findings showed that the mean in pre-test were 12.22 and the mean of the post-test were 13.03 it means that debate technique can improve students speaking skill at Universitas Pasifik Morotai.
