Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are inhabited by many species of benthic invertebrates, demersal and pelagic organisms that reside or stay temporarily in seagrass ecosystems. This research aimed to analyze the density of the macrozoobenthos in two different moon phases and to seek the contribution of each macrozoobenthic species in each research stations at seagrass beds. Sampling of the macrozonthic organisms was taken in three research stations of Panggang Island (west, east, and south) by using a 1 x 1 m of quadratic transect and a sediment corer with 10 cm in diameter. The data analysis statistically analysis data was carried out by finding out the similarity percentage of the species contribution using SIMPER test. Results of this research indicate that the discovered macrozoobenthos for two phases of moon are varied in each station. The total found macrozoobenthos during two moon phases are 28 and 11 species in the west station, 24 and 20 species in the east station, and 18 and 24 species in the south station, respectively. In the three stations, the two highest and the lowest species density of macrozoobenthos during the two moon phases namely are Cerithium salebrosum (283 ind/m2) and Cerithium punctatum (169 ind/m2); and Geotrochus multicarinatum (7 ind/m2). Moreover, the most contributor species of macrozobenthos in the seagrass habitat of the entire stations is Cerithium salebrosum.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution is one of serious problem for tropical mangrove ecosystem. Heavy metals can decrease the quality of a waters. The decreasing in water quality can caused by pollutants such as heavy metals with high concentrations greatly affects the aquatic environment, especially living organisms. The aimed of study is to determine the accumulation level of heavy metals such as Al, Cu, Pb, As, Ni, Cr, Ti, Mn, dan Fe, in root, leaves and stem of E. acoroides. The sampling was carried out in the northern and southern parts of Tunda Island, in March 2015. The method used for seagrass destruction is 6 mL 65% HNO3 and mL H2O2 30%, sediment destruction using Milestone Start D microwave labstation. and using ICP-OES (Inductive Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry) Thermo Scientific iCAP 700 Series. The result show that, the Al, was the dominant heavy metals observed both in sea water and sediment surrounding the observed sea grass areas. Similar result was also observed for seagrass. The dominant sediment grain size absorbing heavy metals is silt-clay because it has more organic matter to control the binding of heavy metals. Heavy metal bioaccumulation is predominant in seagrass leaves and stems due to heavy metal entry into seagrass, substance storage tissue, and seagrass characteristics that are completely submerged in water. Seagrass meadow ecosystem in Tunda Island has been contaminated by several heavy metals.

Abstract

The Halmahera walking shark is a nocturnal species that lives at the bottom of waters and is a species endemic to North Maluku. Weda Bay is one of the largest bays on the island of Halmahera and contains marine resources and high diversity. The aims research was analyze the distribution pattern and abundance of Halmahera walking shark at that location. The research was conducted in September - November 2020. The sampling in Weda Bay, is carried out in two methods, (1) catch of nets with a mesh size of 2,5 cm stretched from the mangrove ecosystem, seagrass to coral reefs with a length of ± 50 meters and a height of 1,5 meters, (2) hand sampling equipment namely the sample catch it by hand with transect area (50x50m2) or 0,25 ha using basic diving equipment (snorkeling) to a depth of 3 meters at high tide in the night. Distribution pattern data analysis used Morisita Index and abundance analysis used reef fish abundance equation. Results the research found 28 individuals, namely 17 females and 11 males. There are 2 distribution patterns of the Halmahera epaullette shark, namely Grouping and Random. The clustered distribution pattern is found at stations 1, 2 and 4, while the random distribution pattern is found at station 3. Overall the distribution pattern of the Halmahera walking shark in Weda Bay is grouped. The highest abundance of Halmahera walkingshark was at station 1, namely 17,33 ind/ha and the lowest abundance at stations 3 and 4 was 5,33 ind/ha. The highest abundance is at station 1, this is because the habitat is still very good from the mangrove, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems to find food and the growth of the Halmahera walking shark.

Abstract

Several water quality parameters that play an important role in increasing coral growth are water temperature, current velocity, salinity, water transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate, phosphate, sulfide, and TSS.  The purpose of this study was to analyze the coral reef cover and the relationship between the physical and chemical parameters of the waters to the percentage of coral reef cover in Daruba waters. Data collecting for coral cover was done using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. Data analysis includes analysis of the percentage of coral cover and analysis of the corelation between water parameters and coral reef cover, namely the Pearson test using SPSS Ver software. 22.  Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the parameters of the aquatic environment that have a correlation with coral cover are dissolved oxygen (DO) in acropora and currents in algae with a Sig. 0.04 and Sig. 0.013. While, pH, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, sulfide and TSS did not have a significant correlation with coral cover with the Sig. > 0.05. The results of the analysis of coral cover in Daruba waters showed that the highest percentage was at Station III with a value of 46% and the lowest was at Station I with a percentage of 9.7%, while at Station IV the percentage was 0% or no coral reefs were found. The result of benthic coverage which dominates all stations is abiotic with a range of 30.3-71.06%. Included in the abotic category are Sand (sand), Silt (mud), and Rubble (coral fracture).
