Abstract

Abstract: Writing a lesson objective is still a challenging task for the English Department students of Lambung Mangkurat University when they do their micro teaching practice in Praktek Pengenalan Lapangan (PPL) I Course. The formulated lesson objectives have to include the ABCD elements -Audience/Actor, Behavior, Condition, Degree- which require distinct characteristics for each. The study examines the lesson objectives of the lesson plans made by the English Department students of Lambung Mangkurat University for PPL I Course in the Academic Year of 2010/2011. There are 91 lesson plans were collected, and there are 91 lesson objectives investigated. The findings discuss the formulation of ABCD requirements in the lesson objectives. It is recommended that the students’ English proficiency must be enhanced because the formulation of a good lesson objective is closely related with the ability to produce grammatically correct sentence. Key words: Lesson Objectives, Audience, Behavior, Condition, Degree Abstrak: Menulis tujuan pembelajaran masih merupakan tugas yang menantang bagi mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat ketika mereka melakukan praktek pembelajaran mikro dalam Mata Kuliah Praktek Pengenalan Lapangan (PPL) I. Second, students translated using the idioms of similar meaning, but dissimilar form strategies. Students who don’t know the same idioms from the SL used the third strategy, translation by paraphrase to see the entire context and paraphrase to find the meaning, change the idiom to non-idiom is easier to understand the meaning. The last strategy is translation by omission, if paraphrasing idioms is difficult then students will be omitted the entire idioms or sentences.

Abstract

While writing is critical in education, it is a difficult skill to master. Reading is one of the many factors that affect writing. Numerous studies have established a link between reading and writing.  With that assumption, this study will examine the relationship between English reading habits and writing ability among students enrolled in the Advanced Writing Course at the English Language Education Study Program of Lambung Mangkurat University. This study adopted a quantitative approach and a correlational design, with students from batch 2018 as the research population. Using a simple random sampling technique, 50 students were randomly selected to serve as samples. A questionnaire was used to ascertain the students' reading habits, whereas a test was used to ascertain their writing abilities. Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient Correlation was then used to determine the correlation between the variables. The result showed that the correlation coefficient was 0.211 and the significance value was 0.141, indicating that H0 is acceptable because of the sig. value was ? 0.05. Therefore, there is a weak and negative correlation between students' reading habits and their writing ability. This occurred because many students with strong reading habits also have weak writing abilities, implying that the correlation between the two variables is weak.  It is suggested that students develop a reading habit by beginning with small steps such as selecting a short, easy-to-read book, setting small goals, making reading enjoyable, making reading friends, and remaining consistent.

Abstract

Reading is a critical component of academic life. Undergraduate students' course success depends much on how they process their reading. However, some studies show that students face difficulties in their reading in several terms. These difficulties are twofold for English as a Foreign Language students who have to deal with reading and language content. In this respect, students must be able to self-regulate their reading activities in and outside classrooms. This study was intended to investigate the students' levels of self-regulated learning in reading comprehension. This study used a cross-sectional design with 40 English Language Education Study Program students at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The instrument was a questionnaire adapted from Zimmerman's Academic Self-Regulated Learning Scale (2000). The questionnaire was distributed online to the students using Microsoft Forms. The data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings show that the ways both groups of students regulate their cognitive processes, motivation, and behavior within an educational setting are similar. Nevertheless, concerning that the fourth-semester students might be more organized SRL students than the second-semester ones, reading instructions must be structured to develop students' self-regulated learning. In other words, lecturers should condition the instructions to enhance the students' self-regulation
