Abstract

As a product of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the commonly-used social media Instagram offers a new platform of digital writing with unique features that could facilitate and accommodate the exploration of creative writing genre. Through this study, 27 university students’ perception were explored with qualitative descriptive study using open-ended questionnaire, interview and documentation to find out how they perceived this new platform in their writing journey in comparison to university website or traditional means like printed paper. For the findings, variety of students perception were showed in three different spectrums using thematic analysis: 1) majority of the students perceived their experience as positive one due to Instagram benefits as source of inspiration, creativity endeavour and larger engagement for their writing product; 2) some of the students also offered their negative experience in regards to word limitation and insecurity of uploading to public; 3) meanwhile, the more neutral one admitted that Instagram’s benefit was just similar to other platforms. This study’s significant can help future lecturer/teacher in adapting and evaluating the advantage and disadvantage of this application implementation for the improvement of future class.

Abstract

Pembelajaran yang dilakukan dalam jaringan (daring) dikarenakan pandemic Covid-19 membuat berbagai pihak harus melakukan banyak penyesuaian. Para guru Bahasa Inggris mencoba beradaptasi menjalani pembelajaran dalam Era Kenormalan Baru ini. Berbagai kendala yang terjadi antara lain media pembelajaran dan asesmen yang dominan, monoton dan membuat para murid merasa jenuh atau bosan, penyerapan materi pelajaran yang sangat minimal dan mengarah pada learning loss, serta pelaksanaan Penilaian Harian (PH) yang menjadi kurang berintegrasi. Berdasarkan berbagai permasalahan tersebut, sebuah alternatif pembelajaran yang sederhana berbasis Microsoft PowerPoint dikembangkan sebagai bagian dari pembelajaran berbasis teknologi yang dapat digunakan untuk pembelajaran dan asesmen di luar ataupun di dalam kelas. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada Bulan Juli-Agustus 2022 dalam bentuk pelatihan pembuatan dan penggunaan Flipped Material sebagai salah satu bentuk solusi pembelajaran pasca covid 19 yang ditawarkan kepada para guru Bahasa Inggris SMA se-derajat di Banjarmasin. Kontribusi mendasar pada peserta Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) adalah peningkatan kemampuan dalam membuat dan menggunakan Flipped Material berbasis Microsoft PowerPoint yang dapat dipakai untuk asesmen keterampilan membaca Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pengabdian ini sangat diminati oleh peserta yaitu guru-guru Bahasa Inggris SMA dan se-derajat yang terlihat antusias mengikuti pelatihan dan mereke berkeinginan agar pelatihan serupa diadakan secara berkelanjutan. Dengan kata lain, diharapkan kegiatan-kegiatan seperti ini dapat diselenggarakan secara rutin.  Melalui kegiatan seperti ini, peserta PkM diharapkan dapat memperoleh banyak informasi dan keterampilan serta dapat mempraktikkan kembali pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang di dapat untuk membuat Flipped Material berbasis Microsoft PowerPoint dalam pembelajaran dan asesmen keterampilan membaca peserta didik mereka.Learning which is carried out online due to the Covid-19 pandemic has forced various parties to make many adjustments. English teachers have been trying to adapt to learning condition in this New Normal Era. Various obstacles that had occurred include learning media and assessments that were dominant, monotonous and made students felt bored, absorption of subject matter, which was very minimal and led to learning loss, and the implementation of Daily Assessments (DA) which became less integrated. Based on these problems, a simple learning alternative based on Microsoft PowerPoint was developed as part of technology-based learning that can be used for learning and assessment outside or inside the classroom. In this respect, the training on making and using Flipped Material was one of the solutions offered to high school English teachers of the same level in Banjarmasin. The fundamental contribution to the target audience, the participants of this community service activity- English teachers of Senior High School, is the increased ability to create and use Microsoft PowerPoint-based Flipped Materials that can be used for the assessment of English reading skills. This community service activity was in great demand by the participants as seen from their enthusiasm in participating in the training and the desire for similar training to be held on an ongoing basis. Through this community service activity, the participants, namely English teachers, are expected to be able to re-practice the knowledge and skills acquired in making Microsoft-PowerPoint-based Flipped Materials to improve their students' reading skills.
