Abstract

Background: Turmeric is a plant that grows in tropical areas and functions as medicine. The chemical compounds contained in turmeric have a role as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-cancer, indigestion, smallpox, insect bites. The curcumin content in turmeric has antibacterial activity against various types of Gram negative, Gram positive, antiviral and anti-tumor bacteria. Essential oils can be used as antibacterial because they contain hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups which are phenol derivatives. Flavonoids can interfere with cell wall formation with peptidoglycan transpeptidase activity which will break down cell walls and damage cell membranes so that important components such as proteins, nucleic acids, nucleotides will be lysis. Staphylococcus bacteria are normal flora on the skin, respiratory tract, and digestive tract of food in humans. These bacteria can cause disease when they reach 1,000,000 or 106 per gram, an amount sufficient to produce the toxin. S. aureus bacteria can cause various types of infections ranging from minor skin infections, food poisoning to systemic infections. The aim of our study was to analyze the effects of infusion and turmeric juice (Curcuma domestica val) on the growth of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus through invitro. Method: This study is a laboratory experimental study with the aim of analyzing turmeric infusion (Curcuma domestica val) and turmeric juice effect on the growth of staphylococcus aureus by invitro. This research was conducted in an integrated laboratory, FK UNUSA. The samples in this study were 4 replications per treatment. The independent variables in this study were turmeric infusion and turmeric juice (with a concentration of 10%, 30%, 50% while the dependent variable in this study was the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Data analysis used was the one way ANOVA test and Pearson correlation to determine the effect of giving turmeric infusion and turmeric juice on the growth of bacteria staphylococcus aureus through invitro. Result: The average growth of bacteria in the turmeric infusion in group I (control), 10%, 30% and 50% of turmeric infusion was 4.89 ± 0.4425 log CFU / ml, 3.07 ± 0.61330 log CFU / ml, 2.99 ± 0.63986 log CFU. / ml and 3.02 ± 0.22650 log CFU / ml. The average growth of this bacteria in giving turmeric juice in group I (control), giving 10%, 30% and 50% turmeric infusion was 4.89 ± 0.04425 log CFU / ml, 4.40 ± 0.18355log CFU / ml, 3.10 ± 0.58926 log CFU / ml and 3.02 ± 0.38206 log CFU / ml. Conclusion: In this study, found that there was an effect of giving turmeric infusion and turmeric juice (Curcuma domestica val) on Staphylococcus aureus growth and there was an effect of giving multilevel doses of turmeric infusion and turmeric juice (Curcuma domestica val) on Staphylococcus aureus growth through invitro.

Abstract

The teenagers and children are groups that are vulnerable to radicalism. This de-radicalized program is an innovation in the field of community service called "Learning Children in the Country". This program is useful to prevent radicalism, by increasing nationalism, spirituality and creativity for children and adolescents. This program consists of two major parts, namely brief material delivery and educational games. To assess the success of this community service program, medicine faculty team of UNUSA used a personality measuring instrument, namely the Radical Personality Test (RPT) in the form of pre-test and post-test. Assessment is carried out in a direct and indirect manner. Direct assessment uses a structured interview method, while indirect assessment through observing children's behavior during the learning program. The results of personality assessment show that the post-test value of nationalism and spirituality increases, while the value of the level of radicalism decreases. Emotionally, KANRI children are more stable and better able to complete the assignments. This community service program succeeded in reducing the level of radicalism in KANRI children.

Abstract

Bay leaf extract (Syzygiun polianthum) is one herbal elemnt that may be used to lessen liver function issues, lessen symptops of nausea, vomiting, discomfort and improve adherence and the effectiveness of tuberculossi treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) extract on antioxidant activity, Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and liver histopathology of ethambutol-induced Wistar rats. This research is a laboratory experiment. Antioxidant activity of Bay Leaf Extract was evaluated by comparing vitamin C with spectrophotometry methods. White Wistar rats were separated into 6 groups and uset to test the lebel of MDA and livers histopathology. Group 1 serves as the control group and received DMSO (placebo); Group 2 was received ethambutol 50mg/kg BW; Group 3 was received ethambutol and silymarine with dose 50mh/kg BW. Group 4-6 had been given ethambutol and extra ethanol extract of bay leaves of 75,150, dan 300mg/kg BW, respectively. The results of the spectrophotometry showed that the Bay Leaf Extract had antioxidant activity comparable to that of vitamin C, with an IC50 of 11.4 g ± (4.4%). One-Way ANOVA test results obtained p = 0.002 (p<0.05) while the Kruskal-Wallis test results obtained the Asymp. Sig value 0.105> 0.05. There was a significance difference in each group’s MDA levels (p=0.002). Although there was no significant difference in the liver histopathology of treated rats (p>0.05). While bay leaf extract significantly lowers MDA levels in ethambutol-induced Wistar rats, it has no discernible impact on the liver histopathology of ethambutol-induced Wistar rats. Bay leaf extract possesses antioxidant activity comparable to vitamin C.
