Abstract

This study examines the segmentation and pronunciation accuracy of the alveodental phoneme thāʾ [tˤ] in Arabic based on students' reading tests. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis design, the research seeks to obtain detailed descriptive data in the form of words and images. The Praat application is used to measure sound frequency from various sound sources, ensuring precise and comprehensive analysis. The results indicate that students face significant challenges in correctly pronouncing the phoneme [tˤ], with frequent articulation errors. These pronunciation difficulties are attributed to several factors, including the phonetic differences between the students' native languages and Arabic, the inherent complexity of Arabic phonemes, and the influence of various dialects or accents the students may possess. This study highlights the critical need for a thorough understanding of phoneme properties and emphasizes the importance of consistent practice to improve pronunciation accuracy of [tˤ]. By addressing these issues, educators can better support students in mastering Arabic pronunciation, ultimately enhancing their overall language proficiency. The findings of this research contribute to the broader field of phonetics and language education, offering valuable insights for language teachers and learners alike.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the quality of Arabic language examination questions in the National Standardized Final Examination (Ujian Akhir Berstandar Nasional - UABN) at the Nurul Amal Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah Awaliyah (MDTA), Karawang, for the academic year 2022/2023. The evaluation involves aspects of validity, reliability, difficulty level, item discrimination, distractor effectiveness, and Bloom's Taxonomy cognitive level. The research method employs a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design. Data were obtained from the documentation of examination questions and answer sheets, as well as interviews with teachers and students. The participants comprised 14 fourth-grade students of MDTA, selected using a saturated sampling technique. Analysis was conducted using Microsoft Office Excel for validity and reliability, and Anbuso Ver.8 software for difficulty level, item discrimination, and distractor effectiveness. The validity analysis results showed that only 20% of the items were valid, highlighting the need for structural improvements in item formulation. The test reliability met the desired standard, with 8 valid items yielding higher reliability. The difficulty level exhibited variation, ranging from difficult to easy. Evaluation of students' and teachers' perceptions revealed differences in assessing the difficulty level of the questions. Item discrimination analysis identified items with good discrimination, but some were inadequate. The effectiveness of distractors in 67.5% of the items required revision due to unsatisfactory performance. This study contributes to understanding the quality of Arabic language examination questions at MDTA and offers improvement suggestions. HOTS and LOTS) indicate that 21 questions fall under the LOTS category, while 19 other questions fall under the HOTS category. The findings are expected to positively influence the development of Arabic language learning evaluations, especially at MDTA

Abstract

This study aims to understand the mispronunciation of the consonant /f/ in Arabic by Javanese Speakers (JS), Sundanese Speakers (SS) and Batak Speakers (BS). The focus is on the sound /f/ as it can shift to /p/ when spoken by speakers of various L1 languages. Javanese, Sundanese, and Batak were chosen because of their prominence in Indonesia. Using a descriptive-evaluative-comparative approach, the researchers analyzed the pronunciation of /f/ by JS, SS, BS, contrasted with a native speaker (NS), Sheikh Misyari bin Rasyid Al-'Afasi. The research data was in the form of sound recordings of the recitation of nine verses of the Quran with the sound /f/, collected using the listen-record-pay-attention technique and analyzed acoustically through Praat. The findings reveal phonetic interference in pronouncing/f/ at the beginning, middle, and end of words by SS and BS. In JS, it only occurs at the beginning and the end. The absence of sound /f/ in the phonological system of local languages can cause this interference. The implication lies in learning to listen and speak Arabic, helping to design strategies to overcome pronunciation errors when encountering foreign sounds in the learner's phonological system.
