Abstract

Tourist Guiding is a compulsory subject that aims to prepare students to be a prospective Tour Guide (TG) with excellent English mastery, especially speaking. Two-year observation showed that the students have the low ability in speaking skills. They did not speak fluently because they lacked knowledge and vocabulary in tourist guiding. This study was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was carried out by implementing Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), as a dual-educational approach that uses additional languages to learn and teach both content and language, in an online Tourist Guiding class. Participated by 28 students, this research followed stages of CAR. Additionally, pre-test and post-test were conducted to investigate students’ different performances before and after CLIL was implemented, while questionnaires were distributed to obtain the data about the students’ voices about CLIL implementation. The findings revealed that the quality of teaching and learning in the Tourist Guiding class improved after the implementation of CLIL. In addition, CLIL could enhance both students’ language skills (especially speaking) and tourist guiding competency. Teachers should both understand the subject content very well and have a very good mastery of English so that CLIL can be implemented successfully.

Abstract

Blogs can be deemed as an alternative digital media which have been strategically employed for business communication. One of the realizations is product blogs. As startups, which are identically linked to digital media, have been skyrocketing in number, product blogs play an integral role to accommodate their business communication. In writing an article for the product blogs, startups often open an internship vacancy for, among others, polytechnic students majoring English for business communication. However, generic structure of a product blog article is quite different from academic essays. There is a need to equip the students with adequate product blog article writing skills before they embark on internship. This study aims at empirically delving into generic structure of successful Indonesian startups’ product blogs. To achieve the aim, this research employed corpus-based research methodology. There were 33.430 tokens of product blogs from two unicorn startups. The framework for analysis was adapted from Askehave and Nielsen (2005). The findings show that there were three moves in the corpus, namely contextualizing product, detailing product, and soliciting response. Each move consisted of steps which were categorized into reading mode and navigating mode. The findings lead to pedagogical implications—inculcating the moves to polytechnic students majoring English for business communication—as an attempt to link and match between vocational pedagogy and industry requirements.

Abstract

In this modern era, doing business requires a marketing strategy to market a product. One good marketing method is to utilize a customer database. A database is a collection of data or information stored systematically. Meanwhile, the customer database is data that contains customer personal information, such as name, email, telephone number, age, gender, product search history, transaction history and other demographic and psychographic data. This database can be used to build and maintain a business, as well as establishing good relationships with customers. As Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the hope is that they can keep up with developments by becoming familiar with data. When you are data literate, it will make it easier for MSMEs to develop their business in this digital era. The customer database will help MSMEs reach more consumers. Utilizing data coupled with knowledge in processing customer databases is one of the keys to successfully managing a business. As an MSME actor, you must also be able to use data optimally. The Sanan tempeh chips center, as one of the areas in Malang City, is the center of a home industry that produces tempeh chips that are still surviving in this global era. The aim of this research is to help MSMEs to manage customer databases, business actors know and of course create the best business strategies
