Abstract

The development of technology, including Internet, has raised the number of cyberbullying. Social media is on where cyberbullying commonly occurs as most of its users are teenagers. This current research tried to analyse the phenomena of cyberbullying on a movie entitled Cyberbully. This movie is centered to the main character, Casey, whose computer got hacked, and she got bullied by an anonymous hacker. The objectives of this research were to find the types of cyberbullying the main character suffered from, and the effects of cyberbullying the main character experienced. The results show the types of cyberbullying appearing in the movie are harassment, denigration, impersonation, outing and trickery, and cyberstalking with the latter dominating. Meanwhile, the effects of cyberbullying found were increased emotional distress, lowered self-esteem, isolation and withdrawal, and indulging in harmful habits with isolation withdrawal as the most dominant one. From the results, it can be concluded that how someone’s id, ego, and superego work is related to the defense mechanism performed. In this movie, the main character shows her dominant personality sistem, that is super ego as she made decisions based on morals and judgements about right and wrong, and her decisions were based more on moral values. Besides, people who are active in social media can provoke cyberbullying. The effects are very dangerous because they can damage the victim's mentality and even makes the victim a potential perpetrator. This actually is a warning for young people to see.  Thus, the wise use of social media is advisable.

Abstract

Few know that comic strips can be used in educational contexts, particularly in English language classrooms. If associated with the purpose of language teaching, the use of comic strips is to facilitate students to develop their three learning domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Integrating comic strips in classroom activities will make the process of learning more meaningful. In Indonesian context, the teaching and learning process utilising comics is still rare to find. Most Indonesian EFL teachers usually only focus on enhancing students’ reading comprehension skill when using comic strips in their teaching. They ignore other objectives such as providing the students’ other language skills, introducing the culture embedded, or sharping students’ learning domains. Such a problem occurs because the teachers do not know and are not sure of how to find good and suitable comics for their students. In addition to that, many teachers admit that it is quite difficult to prove and to convince the parents that comics can be used as stimulating, pedagogically-suitable learning media. Concerning the issue, this paper presents a comprehensive explanation on the nature of comic that suits the purpose of EFL/ESL teaching and and offers some best practices for English teachers to utilize comic strips in their teaching. It is expected that after reading this paper, EFL teachers in Indonesia can explore their belief and practice in implementing comics and bring up a new trend in EFL classroom.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the system of education in Indonesia. The pandemic due to the corona virus has made the Indonesian government alter the education system from conventional meeting to online meeting. However, the closure of schools in Indonesia during the pandemic has ignited problems for teachers, students, and parents. Despite the benefits it offers, online learning also has some evident drawbacks. The pros and cons of online learning are also experienced by the students at UNARS. Accordingly, an online survey was conducted among the students to see how they perceived online learning. The result of the survey shows that although not as pleasant as offline meeting, online meeting is rated somewhat enjoyable by 50,8% of the students.

Abstract

Komunikasi dan interaksi yang baik antara guru dan siswa adalah salah satu penentu keberhasilan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Dari hasil pengamatan pendahuluan yang telah dilakukan, guru di SDN 1 Sumberargo mengalami kesulitan dalam membuat siswa aktif dalam berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi dengan guru. Siswa cenderung pasif dalam berkomunikasi karena beberapa alasan, seperti siswa yang tidak terbiasa dalam bahasa Indonesia, dan terbatasnya media pengajaran yang dapat mendorong minat siswa untuk berkomunikasi. Sekolah ini terletak di daerah terpencil yang membuatnya hampir mustahil untuk mengakses fasilitas umum. Pada dasarnya, media pengajaran tidak perlu modern dan canggih. Yang terpenting tentang media pembelajaran adalah kegunaannya dalam memfasilitasi siswa untuk belajar. Dalam hal ini, komik strip adalah media yang tepat untuk digunakan untuk memotivasi siswa untuk belajar berkomunikasi secara lisan atau tertulis. Ini karena komik memiliki elemen visual yang dapat menarik minat siswa. Media pengajaran sederhana seperti komik yang dibuat oleh guru dapat memotivasi siswa untuk belajar berkomunikasi. Guru tidak perlu membeli komik untuk dapat menggunakan media pengajaran ini di kelas, terutama mengingat lokasi sekolah yang jauh dari fasilitas umum. Para guru dapat membuat komik mereka sendiri untuk digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Tapi tentu saja ini membutuhkan keterampilan guru dalam menggambar komik. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan pengembangan komik dibuat sebagai solusi untuk membekali guru di SDN 1 Sumberargo. Kegiatan ini juga bertujuan untuk menyediakan media pengajaran alternatif bagi para guru. Melalui pelatihan ini, diharapkan para siswa akan termotivasi untuk mulai belajar berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi dengan guru sehingga kualitas pendidikan di sekolah akan meningkat.

Abstract

PROGRAM OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE WRITING TRAINING: TOWARDS QUALIFIED TEACHERS. Writing scientific articles is one of teacher’ efforts to improve their quality and develop their professionalism. Unfortunately, their reading interest and wriitng habit are still low. This makes the teachers have difficulties when they have to submit a promotion because they do not have enough background knowledge and understanding in writing scientific articles, while one of the requirements for submitting a promotion is to publish a scientific article. Therefore, a training on scientific article writing was held for teachers in Situbondo to provide knowledge and skills for them to write scientific articles. After participating in this activity, teachers are expected to be able to publish scientific articles and be able to improve the quality and professionalism of their work so that the quality of education becomes better.

Abstract

Banyak kalangan pelajar dan mahasiswa di Situbondo yang memiliki bakat menulis, utamanya dalam menulis cerita pendek dan puisi. Namun sayangnya banyak dari mereka selama ini hanya menulis cerita pendek atau puisi yang ditulisnya di halaman media sosial dan tidak terpublikasi dengan baik. Melihat fakta ini, pelaksana kegiatan memiliki inisiatif untuk memfasilitasi penulis-penulis muda berbakat ini agar bisa memiliki kesempatan untuk mengembangkan diri. Solusi yang pelaksana tawarkan adalah dengan memberi pendampingan berupa pelatihan dan pembimbingan penulisan cerita pendek dan puisi hingga karya para penulis tersebut dapat diterbitkan secara komersil. Melalui pelatihan yang diberikan, para penulis tersebut mendapatkan tambahan ilmu dan wawasan tentang teori penulisan cerita pendek dan puisi, dan bagaimana proses yang harus dilalui untuk menerbitkan sebuah karya sastra. Melalui kesepakatan yang dibuat, sebagai langkah awal, para penulis ini akan memulai dengan publikasi puisi yang mereka buat. Maka dari itu, pelaksana kegiatan membuka kesempatan bagi penulis-penulis tersebut untuk mengirimkan karya puisinya untuk kemudian disunting, dikumpulkan, dan diterbitkan menjadi antologi puisi dengan tema Situbondo. Sampai artikel ini ditulis, naskah puisi yang telah terkumpul berjumlah enam judul. Karya-karya yang terkumpul akan diterbitkan nanti pada bulan Oktober.

Abstract

Technology has been widely used in educational field, including in higher education level. To cope with the developing era and the now students who are technology natives, lecturers need to use technology in everyday teaching and learning process. Being concerned with this, this current study was conducted to measure lecturers’ perception and use of technology in their teaching and learning process. The study was conducted qualitatively by delivering questionnaires to English lecturers at University of Abdurachman Saleh Situbondo. The results showed that the most frequent uses of technology were technology use by students in clasroom, technology use by lecturers when delivering materials, and the use of professional emails by lecturers. Besides, it was also found out that most lecturers felt positive towards the use of technology in their classroom. They used the technology confidently, and they integrated technology in their teaching and learning process using mainstream and instructional types of technology. This study is finally expected to give some insights for lecturers to be always updated with the development of technology and are aware with obstacles that might occur during the use of technology.

Abstract

This research is pragmatic study which has a purpose to describe politeness strategies of directive speech act in Kungfu Panda movie. That movie has been watching by people including children.Therefore the use of language in that movie being an interesting matter to be analyzed. The politeness theory proposed by Brown & Levinson used to describe politeness strategy of directive utterances in Kungfu Panda movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. Some methods used in this study are: first, the data are collected by using observation method. Second, the data are analyzed using Sparadley’s theory by making domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and discovering cultural themes. Third, in presenting the result of data analysis uses an informal method of presentation. The result of this research showes that there are fifty four directive utterances which use politeness strategy, both positive politeness strategy and negative politeness. Positive politeness strategy used by (1) using in-group identity markers, (2) being optimistic, (3) including both speaker and hearer in the activity, (4) giving sympathy to hearer. Negative politeness strategy used by (1) being conventionally indirect, (2) being pessimistic, (3) minimising the imposition, (4) giving deference, (5) impersonalizing speaker and hearer, and the last (6) stating face threatening act as a general rule.

Abstract

Penggunaan teknologi oleh anak bukanlah hal yang baru. Saat ini, hampir semua anak memiliki gawai sendiri seperti telepon pintar, tablet, atau laptop. Sayangnya, penggunaan gawai oleh anak seringkali tanpa melalui pengawasan yang cukup dari orangtua di rumah. Beberapa orangtua memberikan gawai kepada anak mereka dan memberikan akses untuk menggunakannya tanpa adanya kontrol terhadap apa saja yang dilakukan anak dengan gawai mereka. Sebagai pengganti orangtua di sekolah, guru juga memiliki peranan yang penting dalam membantu pengawasan penggunaan gadget oleh anak. Namun sayangnya, beberapa guru masih tidak sadar bahwa peranan mereka cukup signifikan dalam menanamkan pemahaman ini pada anak. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan masih banyaknya bentuk penyalahgunaan gawai oleh anak saat di sekolah. Padahal, jika digunakan secara tepat, gawai memiliki manfaat yang sangat banyak dalam mendukung proses belajar anak di sekolah. Terkait dengan hal ini, kami mencoba memberikan sosialisasi pada guru, wali murid, dan siswa di SDN 1 Seletreng tentang pentingnya kerjasama antara orangtua dan guru dalam memperkenalkan gawai secara bijak pada anak. Dengan adanya sosialisasi ini diharapkan anak memiliki pemahaman yang baik sejak dini tentang dampak positif dan dampak negatif dari penggunaan gawai. Tujuan jangka panjang dari kegiatan ini adalah adanya kerjasama yang baik antara orangtua dan sekolah (dalam hal ini guru) untuk bersama-sama mendidik dan menanamkan potensi yang baik bagi anak terutama dalam kaitannya dengan penggunaan gawai dalam mendukung pendidikan dan perkembangana anak baik secara kognitif, afektif, dan psikomotor. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah adanya respon positif berupa pemahaman orangtua dan guru tentang penggunaan gawai pada anak, dan adanya usaha-usaha nyata yang dilakukan untuk mengawasi penggunaan gawai oleh anak.

Abstract

This study analyze the messages that imply and how the author sends the messages in graphic novel The Hobbit. The data in this study are in the form of utterances and pictures that refer to the moral values also direct and indirect messages. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The method that the researcher used is library research. The data of this research are in the form of pictures and utterances. The steps of data collection are reading graphic novel The Hobbit, finding the messages in the form of utterances and pictures in every chapter in graphic novel The Hobbit, writing / noting down the utterances and pictures that imply a message. The steps of data analysis are doing data reduction by choosing the relevant messages, describing the messages found using Nurgiyantoro’s theory on messages (2007), describing how the author sends messages based on its types using Mahsuri’s theory (2015), concluding the data. From the data, the researcher found thirty four data for the messages. The messages are mostly about how to behave well and to have good atitude towards others. There are three data showing the messages are delivered in a direct way by the author, and there are thirty one data that shows indirect way.
