Abstract

This article discusses two representative poems by a famous African-American writer, Claude Mckay. It seeks to interpretthe poems, “If We Must Die” and “Enslaved”, which both explore the issues racism and mental slavery, in the light of politicalapproaches such as Marxist criticism and postcolonialism. The main findings of this article are: 1) that racism and violence that itentails are rooted in class conflict and 2) that McKay’s poems can be seen as a counter-hegemony of the ethnocentricity of whiteculture. Generally, it is hoped that this writing can promote historical and political readings of minority poets like Claude McKay.

Abstract

This thesis explores the violent behaviour illustrated in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. It focuses on the antagonist’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) in order to reveal the motives behind his violent behaviour. The writers apply psychoanalytical theory and brings in contemporary  theories by experts in psychology in order to help better understand the psychological problems in the novel. The writers conclude that NPD and violent behaviour of the antagonist are ultimate interlinked.

Abstract

Narasi memegang peranan penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Ia mempengaruhi pembentukan pengetahuan dan identitas manusia. Oleh karena itu, anak-anak mestinya dipapar pada sebanyak mungkin narasi, dengan harapan mereka akan tumbuh menjadi pribadi dengan nilai moral positif yang mereka pelajari dari narasi yang mereka baca. Artikel ini menyajikan hasil kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat bertemakan “Baca Sastra Cinta Sastra” yang membawa narasi kehadapan siswa-siswa kelas VI SDN 16 Kec. Lubuk Begalung, Padang. Siswa-siswa tersebut terbukti kurang terekspos pada sastra anak karena sekolah mereka tidak memiliki perpustakaan dan dirumah mereka juga tidak memiliki koleksi buku pribadi. Dari kegiatan ini didapatkan hasil bahwa sebagian besar siswa-siswa tersebut sangat antusias dengan bacaan yang diberikan pada mereka dan mampu memberi respon pada bacaaan tersebut dan menarik nilai moral yang ada dalam narasi yang mereka baca. Namun sayangnya mereka masih belum mampu mereproduksi bacaan dalam bentuk story telling. Kata Kunci:narasi, sastra anak, Grimm Bersaudara, identitas, moral.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji karya sastra Indonesia karangan Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana (STA) Anak Perawan Disarang Penyamun dan karya sastra Amerika Maggie: A Girl of the Streets oleh Stephen Crane. Kedua karya ini mempunyai aliran tema yang sama yaitu tentang kemiskinan. Penulis melihat kedua karya tersebut sebagai refleksi kemiskinan yang terjadi pada kedua negara yang berbeda. Penelitian ini menganalisis permasalahan utama, yaitu kemiskinan dan aspek kebijaksanaannya. Kajian sastra banding ini adalah suatu studi teks accross culutral termasuk sosial dan ekonomi yang sangat kental adanya pada karya Stephen Crane, yaitu Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, novel Amerika yang terbit pada tahun 1893, dan novel Indonesia, yaitu Anak Perawan di Sarang Penyamun karya STA yang diterbitkan pada tahun 1940. Dari kedua karya yang berbeda bahasa dan budaya ini penulis melihat adanya unsur kesamaan tema, yaitu tentang kemiskinan yang disebabkan oleh beberapa aspek di antaranya adalah rendahnya tingkat sumber daya manusia dan kesenjangan yang tajam antara masyarakat kelas atas dan SALINGKA, Majalah Ilmiah Bahasa dan Sastra Volume 11 Nomor 1 Edisi Juni 2014 (118—130) 119 menengah ke bawah. Dalam karya STA itu tergambar keadaan depresi ekonomi Indonesia pada tahun 1930-an yang latarnya terjadi di hutan daerah Sumatra Selatan, tepatnya daerah Lahat.Sedangkan dalam karya Crane terlihat depresi ekonomi Amerika yang dipresentasikan di perumahan kumuh ’slum area’ kota New York, Amerika. Analisis bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan paradigma mimetics, di mana data penelitian diambil dari teks (kedua karya sastra) dan konteks (buku-buku teks yang berhubungan dengan keadaan sosial, budaya dan ekonomi kedua negara, yaitu Indonesia dan Amerika) Pertama penulis membahas secara intrinsik dan kedua secara extrinsik dan terakhir secara komparasi dengan menagapilkasikan teori sociology of literature dan political unconscious. Analisis membuktikan bahwa kedua karya sastra yang berlainan bahasa dan negara itu mencerminkan kemiskinan masyarakat Indonesia dan Amerika, depresi eknomi dan sistem ekonomi kapitalis adalah hal penyebab kemiskinan tersebut serta kritikan untuk kehidupan yang lebih baik, dan saran yang harus dilakukan untuk menimalisir kemiskinan itu sendiri

It seeks to outline some of the approach’s key contributions, such as explanations of possible origins of narrative and adaptive functions of literature as well as novel ways of interpreting individual works. This piece of writing also explores the controversies surrounding the approach, namely the stance that the approach takes against the postmodernist establishment and the criticism it receives. Regarding both the main ideas and the controversies, this paper seeks to answer and whether or not this approach is useful or relevant at all in today’s modern world.

Abstract

Chinese-Indonesian literature in Malay have been outshined by the canonized and goverment-backed Balai Pustaka. However, an analysis of a representative book using a proper theory allows us not only to take a glimpse of the social dynamics of the colonial time, but also to see its literary worth. This paper applies mainly Georg Lukacs’ idea of reflection theory to Cerita Oey Se, a novel about the rise of a Chinese merchant of Indonesian colonial time and his subsequent personal problems. The main findings are: (1) The work reflects the socio-political condition of Indonesian colonial time in its ‘totality’along with its inherent contradictions. (2) The work functions as an implicit critical discourse toward the colonial and the capitalist social structure. (3) The idea that Indonesian-Chinese literary works are of little value is groundless, since this work among others, fits the criteria of good literary in its capacity to reflect the essential structure of Indonesian society of the late 1800s.

Artikel ini membahas bagaimana karya klasik George Bernard Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, menyoroti masalah perempuan dalam konteks ketimpangan sosial dalam masyarakat Inggris abad ke-19. Konsep yang dipakai adalah teori refleksi oleh kritikus-teoritikus sastra Hungaria György Lukács. Temuan yang dapat disimpulkan adalah 1) Tokoh Mrs. Warren mengilustrasikan bagaimana prostitusi menjadi pilihan logis bagi sebagian perempuan kelas bawah, baik untuk menghindari eksploitasi pekerjaan maupun mempertahankan gaya hidup konsumeristis; 2) Lewat Tokoh Vivie, Shaw menghadirkan antitesis dari tokoh Mrs. Warren. Vivie merupakan tokoh perempuan modern yang tak lagi terpasung baik oleh keterbatasan ekonomi maupun ideologi borjuis dan partriarki.
