Abstract

This article discusses David Malouf’s novel entitled An Imaginary Life from an eco-critical perspective. It examines certain symbols from nature that appear in the novel during the journey of Ovid, the main character, in the exile. The data is collected by applying library research methods. Primary data are all symbols from nature related to Ovid’s journey and the formation of his new identity in the exile. Meanwhile, the secondary data are all information from books and articles related with archetypal symbols and criticism. The result of analysis is presented by the descriptive method. The analysis results in two conclusions. Firstly, nature that is presented as wild at the beginning of the story turns into a home for the main character at the end of the story. Secondly, nature, represented by some symbols, evidently plays an important role in making Ovid embrace his new life and forms new identity apart from his past life as a famous poet back in Rome.

Abstract

Narasi memegang peranan penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Ia mempengaruhi pembentukan pengetahuan dan identitas manusia. Oleh karena itu, anak-anak mestinya dipapar pada sebanyak mungkin narasi, dengan harapan mereka akan tumbuh menjadi pribadi dengan nilai moral positif yang mereka pelajari dari narasi yang mereka baca. Artikel ini menyajikan hasil kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat bertemakan “Baca Sastra Cinta Sastra” yang membawa narasi kehadapan siswa-siswa kelas VI SDN 16 Kec. Lubuk Begalung, Padang. Siswa-siswa tersebut terbukti kurang terekspos pada sastra anak karena sekolah mereka tidak memiliki perpustakaan dan dirumah mereka juga tidak memiliki koleksi buku pribadi. Dari kegiatan ini didapatkan hasil bahwa sebagian besar siswa-siswa tersebut sangat antusias dengan bacaan yang diberikan pada mereka dan mampu memberi respon pada bacaaan tersebut dan menarik nilai moral yang ada dalam narasi yang mereka baca. Namun sayangnya mereka masih belum mampu mereproduksi bacaan dalam bentuk story telling. Kata Kunci:narasi, sastra anak, Grimm Bersaudara, identitas, moral.

Abstract

Literary works are often chosen by feminists as a medium to promote gender equality between men and women. Many women writers portray their female characters as intelligent and independent women and give them equal gender role with the male characters. This article applies feminist approach to analyze the construction of gender role in The Twilight Saga series (2005-2008) written by Stephanie Meyer to see how Meyer, as a woman writer, constructs gender role through her main characters of the novel series. The writers apply Helene Cixous’s theory of patriarchal binary thought which dichotomizes man and woman as two different poles. The analysis shows that the series of four novels represent a hierarchical dichotomous gender role: man is described as subject and centre while woman is the object and margin. Such gender role is evidently a decline in the long struggle of gender equality that has been fought by many women

Abstract

This article discusses a newly emerging branch of literary criticism, Darwinian literary studies, an approach with a serious ambition to change the landscape of literary studies. It seeks to outline some of the approach’s key contributions, such as explanations of possible origins of narrative and adaptive functions of literature as well as novel ways of interpreting individual works. This piece of writing also explores the controversies surrounding the approach, namely the stance that the approach takes against the postmodernist establishment and the criticism it receives. Regarding both the main ideas and the controversies, this paper seeks to answer and whether or not this approach is useful or relevant at all in today’s modern world.

Abstract

Many foreign writers have expressed their fascination with Bali in their works, among them are Jamie James in Andrew and Joey: a tale of Bali and Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love. The two authors wrote about Bali from their personal experience dring their stay in that island. Some images created in the works are seen and analyzed through the prespective of Postcolonialism and New Criticism. This article presents how the two authors depicts Bali as an extravagant place in Eastern country which has adopted some Western values. The negative image is delivered to oppose the idea of Bali as the perfect island; moreover, as part of Indonesia, Bali still has some weaknesses to strengthen and truly support that it is part of Indonesia. The writer admits that this article is far from perfect. Due to the limitation of thinking and time, some more aspects can be explored more profoundly in terms of the image of Bali in these two works. Hence, there are still a lot of literary works that also talk about and discuss the image of Bali. Hopefully, there will be anyone who, willingly or even the writer himself, could continue the research and find out more about the images of Bali from the Western perspective as seen in some other novels and works.
