Abstract

ABSTRACTThe present-day English language learning is characterized by educational potentials of digital technology for informal learning context. However, research examining EFL learners’ characteristics on self-directed use of digital devices for language learning remains a paucity of evidence. Addressing this current issue, the present study aims to shed some light on English language learners’ beliefs and practices on informal digital learning of English beyond classroom. A total of 117 Indonesian EFL learners participated in this study through a 5-point Likert-scale survey and semi-structured interview. The results revealed the disparity between the EFL learners’ beliefs and practices on informal digital learning of English. These EFL learners surely believed that informal digital learning activities could significantly enhance the target language skills, but they slightly engaged in digital learning activities beyond the classroom schedule. The results of semi-structured interviews further delineated that use of native languages in their social circle relationships and limitations of the digital devices used became particular reasons for this circumstance. The results contribute to the realm of English language teaching to reach the possible synchronicity between teacher-designed in-class and out-class digital learning activities and students’ language learning styles and preferences to achieve the success of target language learning.ABSTRAKPembelajaran bahasa Inggris masa kini bercirikan potensi pendidikan teknologi digital untuk konteks pembelajaran informal.

Abstract

A number of research studies have been conducted to examine the practices and challenges of online English language teaching in the age of Covid-19 pandemic. However, research on the teachers’ insights and suggestions to overcome the challenges of the emergency remote teaching still remains unexplored. The present study shed some light on EFL teachers’ teaching activities, challenges, and insights of the emergency remote teaching amidst the global pandemic. The data were obtained from 27 Indonesian EFL teachers (17 female and 10 male) by means of self-written reflection and semi-structured interview. The results revealed that the emergency remote teaching activities were conducted by administering online forum and discussion, integrating social media, and designing interactive exercises. Notwithstanding the facts, the teachers encountered some challenges such as unfamiliarity with digital platforms, inability to provide quick feedbacks, and lack of students’ motivation and engagement during the remote teaching. In responding to the challenges, this study further depicted that joining professional development programs, creating representative lesson plan, and designing interactive online classroom activities could became alternative solution. These results contribute to the realm of English language teaching as fruitful insights and as a ‘wake-up call’ for educational stakeholders in order to enhance the efficacy of online teaching and learning, particularly during the global pandemic.

Abstract

Indonesian students studying both at home and abroad, especially those taking the political negotiation course, are very much interested, but they do not understand the many cultural factors that must be taken into account when negotiating with other people from different backgrounds. This study aims to provide an overview of the understanding of Indonesian students of negotiation in intercultural settings. This study presents a literature review with primary data on articles, magazines, reports, and theories. This study indicates that a good cross-cultural understanding can increase the percentage of success in the research negotiation process. Cultural barriers such as the lack of foreign language skills in communication, a sense of ethnocentrism, and prejudice can hinder the study negotiation process.

The results reveal that the Indonesian ESP teachers develop their digital teaching competence and awareness through professional training programs (e.g. joining workshop, seminar, and conference) and personal practice (e.g. learning from Youtube and other platforms). The results further depict that they utilize Social Networking Sites (e.g. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram) and web-based materials (web-blog, Kahoot, Canva, and Edmodo) to assist their digital teaching practices. The results contribute to offering valuable insight and reference for English teachers to conduct interactive technology-based teaching and learning activities. In addition, the results can be used as a reference for school/college policymakers to ensure the efficacy of digital language learning practice.

Abstract

Open educational resources (OER) can be used by English as a foreign language (EFL) students to improve their language skills, such as writing skills. The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ perception of using OER in improving their writing skills and to identify factors that affected their perception. A quantitative approach in the form of a descriptive survey design was used in this study. The study was conducted at Universitas Islam Negeri Raden Mas Said Surakarta, Indonesia, with 270 EFL students as the participants. The survey adopted two previous studies in which the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Pearson product-moment, and multiple regression analysis. The finding revealed that most students had positive perceptions toward using OER to improve their writing skills. Perceptions of using OER were influenced by interest factors (type of writing activity, type of learning writing delivery), experience factors (teaching effectiveness in the writing skills, cost of education), and from the participants, including gender. It is crucial to maximize the use of OER from different aspects, including quality, value, cognitive, affective, and course quality, particularly to increase their perception toward using OER in improving writing skills.
