Abstract

Riak is a part of the ritual language in Dayak Maanyan ritual tradition, and functioning as a notification about stages of the ritual that are being and will be conducted by the master of the ritual. This study attempted to describe the form of riak through ethnolinguistics study. This study used ethnography research method. The primary data of this study were obtained from riak delivered by wadian in the traditional rituals of the Dayak Maanyan community in Paku Beto village, Paku sub-district, East Barito district, Central Kalimantan province. They were collected through observation and interview during January and April 2019. Findings of the study indicate that each riak mostly consists of four lines, in which the first two lines aim to prepare rhyme and rhythm in order to ease audiences understanding. This first two lines, in the beginning, are an illustration of the culture and the natural or environmental conditions in which the Dayak Maanyan community lives. Meanwhile, the second two lines are the purpose or content of riak that reveal the purpose of the Wadian in the ceremony. Some forms of word use in riak are morphologically different from its usage in the daily DM language. Those differences are the use of affix -i, clitic -ni, and particle sa, in order to give senses of beauty to riak utterances.  Regarding the use of words, phrases, and sentences in riak utterances, there are found many descriptions about nature, living environment, habit, and local culture of the Dayak Maanyan community. This use clarifies that the community culture can affect language use.

Abstract

Persuasive power in the language of advertising can be reflected in the structure of words, phrases, or clauses in the contents of written or spoken advertisements. Most ad text uses verbal and nonverbal symbols to convey the intent and purpose. The use of language in advertising is adjusted to the needs and to achieve the purpose of the ad. Linguistic research specifically looking at appraisal devices in culinary text advertisements on the internet has an important role in uncovering the ideology of their makers. Through appraisal device studies, especially modalities in ad text on the internet media will be able to know and understand the attitude of advertisers towards the reality that surrounds them, namely their assessment of the advertised goods and the assessment of their environment. This qualitative research refers to Sudaryanto's opinion in providing data and data analysis. Provision of data using the method of referencing and note taking. Data analysis methods and techniques use the method of sharing with basic techniques, namely techniques for direct elements; while the advanced technique uses the technique of fade and dressing techniques. Through a series of analyzes, it was found that there was a use of modality: intentional, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic in the culinary ad text typical of Semarang.

This study aims to demystify the stereotypes of Eastern Indonesian citizens. Specifically, the problem of this study is formulated as: (1) What rhetorical strategy and text structure are used in developing themes?, (2) What social cognition can be identified through audience response to the stereotypes of Eastern Indonesian citizens? (3) What social context can be built in response to the stereotype of Eastern Indonesian citizens? The object of study in the form of transactional oral text delivered by the comic Abdur Arsyad at Show 8, SUCI season 4, with the theme of Women, was taken randomly and analyzed with the critical discourse study approach by Teun A. Van Dijk, free-of-charge skills, and methods extra lingual equivalent. The findings of this study indicate that Abdur uses epideictic rhetoric in the form of a single unit in a text structure (joke map), consisting of 13 sub-goals, each containing 3 phases, namely: premise, set-up, and punchline. Meanwhile, cognition in the form of 10 allusions and stereotypes of the rigors of Eastern Indonesian citizens proved to be within the scope of audience knowledge through applause. Furthermore, the social context - a stereotype of Eastern Indonesian citizens was built to explain the cultural background and comic efforts to reduce the stereotype.
