Abstract

Communication plays the most important role in a family. Due to family is the smallest unit in society, it influences the family members to have good values in communication to be implemented in society, later. Furthermore, Islam has its own perpective on communication. It guides the family to interact among the siblings and so forth. Islam shows the principles that should be obeyed to create comfort life.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the students’ ability in writing application letter in general. This study done at english department Muhammadiyah Aceh University, while the students of semester four were taken as the participants. This study is a descriptive quantitative in which  the students’ worksheets and interview are used as the instruments. The result of data analysis shows that the students’ ability in writing application letter is very good. The highest aspect of writing which mastered by the students is mechanic, while the lowest aspect of writing is grammar. Then, the data shows that the grammar mastery affect the students’ ability in writing paragraph process in which the students do not able to express their written ideas if they do not know how to write grammatically correct in english. The significance of this study is pointed to the lecturers and the students. For the lecturers, it is expected that they can evaluate the students’ ability in writing application letter, especially to support their ability in english, and for the students, it is expected that they can get better ways in improving their ability in writing application letter.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the types of grammatical errors in students’ speaking performances, the factors that cause the grammatical errors and the difficulties faced by English department students in speaking. The data were collected through observation and interview. The sample of this study was 10 students of English department at Tarbiyah Faculty of Muhammadiyah University, Aceh. The result of this study revealed that the students made the four types of grammatical errors which classified into omission, misformation, misorder, and overgeneralization. In errors of omission, the students mostly omitted use of verbs, subject, object, prepositions, plural nouns, articles, conjunctions, superlatives form, passive verbs, and to be. In misformation type, the students made incorrect form of verbs, noun, articles, object pronoun, and chosen words. For misordering type, the incorrect placement of verbs, adjectives, nouns, and modals were committed. Last, the students overused the adverb, objects, articles, prepositions, and to be, in overgeneralization. Also, the finding indicated that interlingua and intralingua transfer are two main factors that caused students’ grammatical errors in speaking. Meanwhile, the students’ understanding of grammar and chosen vocabulary were indicated as the problems faced by students in speaking performance..

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to observe and analize the  students’ speaking ability ini speaking class by using scoring rubric. This research was field research which observed the English Department students of Muhammadiyah Aceh University in delivering idea based on what the lecturer asked. The observation sheet was used to get data about the students’ speaking ability based on scoring rubric and the questionnaire sheet shared to get information about their problems and how they solve them. 15 students of IV semester of speaking class taken as the sample. They were taken through random sampling. From the result, there was only one student who got perfect score, and the rest were categorized as good score, average and poor.  The problems that the students faced in speaking class were less confidence, anxiety, lack of vocabulary and problems in grammar ability. For those reasons, they tried to motivate themselves to be better, got enough practice, and memorized English vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe the increase in students' mathematical problem solving abilities after receiving learning using macromedia flash at MTsN Model Banda Aceh. This research approach quantitatively through a quasi-experimental design and one group pretest posttest design. The population was all students of class VIII MTsN Model Banda Aceh, while the sample was selected using random sampling technique and selected students of class VIII-5 as the sample. The research data were collected through a mathematical problem solving ability test which included pretest and posttest questions. Furthermore, the data were analyzed through SPSS version 17 with paired sample t-test and percentage tests. The results showed that there was an increase in students' mathematical problem solving abilities after receiving learning using macromedia flash on geometry material at MTsN Model Banda Aceh. While the increase in students' mathematical problem solving abilities in understanding problems is 41.6%, planning problem solving is 47.2%, carrying out problem solving is 58.3%, and re-examining problem solving is 41.7%. The use of macromedia flash on geometry material is the right solution in visualizing abstract geometric objects into concrete forms, thereby accelerating the achievement of better students' mathematical abilities.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find the students’ problems, the cause of problems and how students solve the problems in writing thesis in introduction section. Qualitative method was used in this research. The sample of this research was 10 students in English department of Muhammadiyah Aceh University. In collecting data, the researcher applied two instruments, they are: questionnaire and interview. The technique was used to analyzing the data in this research is descriptive analysis. The results of analysis shown that most problems that students faced in writing thesis in the introduction section are: matching the supporting theories, considering the purpose, lack of paraphrase, lack of motivation, lack of grammar, consider the content and organization, and consider the topic. The cause of the problem is their English proficiencies are still low. And the last result of this research is students solved their problem by doing a routine consultation and read lots of sources that related with their thesis.

Abstract

Public Speaking is one of the courses learned by the students at universities. In this pilot study, the purpose was to investigate the students’ strategies in coping with anxiety in English Public Speaking course. Participants of the study were two junior students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Banda Aceh in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The study purposively selected them based on their gender and class engagement in the Public Speaking course in 2019/2020 academic year. The study used the qualitative method, with interview to collect the data. Findings showed that the students applied several strategies to deal with their speech anxiety, including having adequate preparation and practice and using hand and body movements when delivering a speech. This study recommends that teachers promote such strategies to other EFL students so that they can overcome their fear of public speaking.

Abstract

This study concerned to the experience of students who had completed the teaching practice as their task in university. This study aims to discuss how self-efficacy influences teaching effectiveness, specifically at initial teaching of their teaching practice. The phenomenological approach as part of qualitative research was applied to see the students’ experience during teaching practice. The sample was four students at English Department, University of Muhammadiyah, Aceh that selected purposively. The four students were interviewed pertaining to five aspects: the importance of self-efficacy, promoting students’ learning, classroom management, building self-efficacy, and teaching ability. To interpret the interview data, the Huberman’ concept was proposed. The finding revealed that the self-efficacy outlines the advantageous for student teachers who were unversed in teaching-learning process. This self-efficacy helped them to have the braveness and the eagerness in increasing the teaching ability that positively affected their teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) yang dilaksanakan di Lembaga Kesejahteraan Sosial Anak (LKSA) Rumah Penyantun Muhammadiyah, Kota Banda Aceh ini bertujuan untuk membantu para siswi mengembangkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Metode pelaksanaan program dilakukan dengan menggunakan beberapa game edukasi yang menyenangkan. Program berlangsung selama delapan pertemuan pada bulan Desember 2022 dan melibatkan sejumlah remaja putri yang masih duduk di Sekolah Menengah Atas. Hasil dari program menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan game edukasi dapat menumbuhkan minat dan meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Oleh karena itu, program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini memiliki manfaat yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris para siswi SMA, serta menumbuhkan minat belajar bahasa inggris di masa yang akan datang. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dapat menjadi salah satu solusi dalam mengatasi kendala-kendala yang dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris di Indonesia. Melalui partisipasi dari elemen masyarakat, pembelajaran bahasa inggris dapat menjadi lebih efektif dan menyenangkan bagi para siswi SMA.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris merupakan Lingua Franca dunia yang harus dipelajari oleh seluruh anak di Indonesia. Diharapkan seluruh lapisan masyarakat berpartisipasi dalam rangka membantu seluruh anak Indonesia untuk dapat berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris. Untuk itu, pengabdian masyarakat yang diadakan pada bulan Juli 2022 di Gampong Lam Raya ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan semangat anak-anak untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan yang menyenangkan dan menarik dengan penggunaan flashcard sebagai media pembelajaran. Kartu flash berwarna-warni ditunjukkan kepada anak-anak dan mereka diminta untuk menebak gambar dari kartu flash dan versi bahasa Inggris disebutkan setelahnya. Selanjutnya, ketika versi bahasa Inggris disebutkan baik anak-anak maupun guru mengulangi kata-kata itu bersama-sama dengan keras. Hasil dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah anak-anak sangat antusias dan tidak bosan dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan flashcard. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan flashcard dalam mengajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan semangat anak-anak dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan memungkinkan anak-anak belajar bahasa Inggris melalui pendekatan yang menyenangkan. English is the world’s Lingua Franca, which has to be learned by all children in Indonesia. It is expected that all levels of the community to participate in order to help all Indonesian children to be able to communicate in English. For that reason, this community service that was held in July 2022 in Gampong Lam Raya, aimed to improve children’s passion to learn English, especially in learning English vocabulary with a pleasant and fun approach with the use of flashcards as the media for learning. The colorful flashcards were shown to the children and they were asked to guess the images form of the flashcards and the English version was mentioned afterwards. Henceforward, when the English version was mentioned both children and teacher repeated the words together loudly. The result of this community service was that the children were very enthusiastic and were not bored with learning English vocabulary by using flashcards. It can be concluded that the use of flashcards in teaching English vocabulary can improve children’s passion for learning English and it lets the children learn English through a fun approach.
