Abstract

This study focused on the strategies of undergraduate students in preparing for the TOEFL Prediction. The study distributed questionnaires to the students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, gathering a sample of 15 students of different majors. The findings revealed that the students’ most used strategy was self-study, involving learning with various English materials. This study suggests that future research focus on the reasons influencing test-takers’ decision in test preparation strategies.

Abstract

This article is a review of the application of jigsaw technique in teaching speaking in Indonesian context. It aims at investigating the implications and the challenges faced in using jigsaw in teaching speaking. This is a library research which compiles the findings of the researches which focus on the application of Jigsaw in teaching speaking in Indonesia.  Due to the limitation of this study, it only takes twelve articles or journals to be reviewed. The finding shows that most of the teachers or lecturers and students who conduct the teaching-learning process by using jigsaw technique experience a lot of advantages rather than disadvantages. However, the disadvantages could also find in the application of jigsaw technique in the class. The advantages of using jigsaw in teaching speaking are Jigsaw could motivate the students, improve their ability in speaking, encourage students to be more active, introduced new vocabulary, improve their social language, makes the teaching and learning process becomes more appealing and dynamic, and increases the students’ confidence in speaking in front of the class. While, the disadvantages of using Jigsaw technique in teaching speaking are it could not be used in challenging subject, young learners or children are unable to follow procedures and instructions appropriately, bore the class and needs extra time, the teachers could not monitor their students' activities, and the students feel difficult to express themselves.

Abstract

Speaking merupakan kemampuan utama yang harus dikuasai oleh mahasiswa yang mempelajari bahasa Inggris, maka dari itu dibutuhkan perhatian yang khusus agar mahasiswa mampu menguasai berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan lancar. Salah satu dari beberapa aspek yang perlu diperhatikan dosen dalam pengajaran speaking adalah persiapan dosen sebelum mengajar agar proses pembelajaran berjalan sesuai dengan tujuan yang diharapkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dalam penyajian data. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki bagaimana dosen-dosen bahasa Inggris Unmuha mempersiapkan pembelajaran mata kuliah Speaking di Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara kepada dosen yang mengajar mata kuliah speaking. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data adalah pedoman wawancara. Data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis dengan menggunakan reduksi data, penampilan data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa dosen Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mempersiapkan mata kuliah Speaking dengan baik dengan membuat perencanaan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan silabus yang tersedia serta memilih metode, materi, dan media yang tepat dan sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa.Kata Kunci: Persiapan Pengajaran, Speaking

Abstract

Tulisan ini menganalisis bab V dari buku hasil karya Sardiman A.M yang berjudul Interaksi dan Motivasi Belajar-Mengajar dan mengaitkannya dengan teori-teori dari para ahli lainnya. Adapun judul bab yang dianalisis adalah Motivasi dan Aktivitas dalam Mengajar. Motivasi merupakan suatu hal yang sangat penting dalam proses belajar-mengajar, meningkatkan prestasi siswa dan membentuk prilaku yang baik (positif). Salah satu indikator keberhasilan pendidikan secara mikro di tataran pembelajaran adalah pada saat seorang guru mampu membentuk dan membangkitkan motivasi belajar para siswanya. Namun realita di dalam masyarakat yang kita temukan akhir-akhir ini adalah kebanyakan siswa di sekitar lingkungan tempat tinggal kita bahkan di daerah-daerah lainnya di Indonesia tidak memiliki kemauan belajar yang tinggi baik di sekolah maupun di rumah. Terkadang banyak siswa acuh tah acuh saat belajar di dalam kelas sehingga mereka tidak mampu menyerap dengan baik pelajaran yang disampaikan oleh guru-guru mereka. Di sisi lain sebagian siswa yang menganggap kegiatan belajar tidak menyenangkan lebih memilih kegiatan lain di luar konteks belajar seperti berkirim pesan melalui aplikasi di telepon genggam, bermain permainan atau ‘game’ pada telepon genggam maupun pada tempat-tempat play station, berkumpul dengan teman-teman, dan lain-lain. Oleh sebab itu, guru memainkan peran penting dalam memotivasi siswa dalam kegiatan belajar-mengajar.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the problems that parents faced and how they dealt with them during the online learning process. The study used the qualitative research method. The study enlisted 10 people (parents) as the participants to describe the type of issues that arose during the online learning process. The data were then examined through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that parents faced a variety of issues that hampered the learning process; the issues were primarily caused by a lack of a good phone, internet data, and poor connection. The study suggests that in order to fix the problems, parents should contact the teachers and seek help from others.

Abstract

This study analyzes the lecturers’ ways in assessing students’ speaking skill. The study used a qualitative method to investigate four English lecturers and uses interview as the instrument to obtain the data needed. The findings show that the assessments used can be both formative and summative. The lecturers have utilized both formal and informal assessments to track and quantify their students' learning progress and determine whether the course’s objectives have been met.

Abstract

Public Speaking is one of the courses learned by the students at universities. In this pilot study, the purpose was to investigate the students’ strategies in coping with anxiety in English Public Speaking course. Participants of the study were two junior students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Banda Aceh in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The study purposively selected them based on their gender and class engagement in the Public Speaking course in 2019/2020 academic year. The study used the qualitative method, with interview to collect the data. Findings showed that the students applied several strategies to deal with their speech anxiety, including having adequate preparation and practice and using hand and body movements when delivering a speech. This study recommends that teachers promote such strategies to other EFL students so that they can overcome their fear of public speaking.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) yang dilaksanakan di Lembaga Kesejahteraan Sosial Anak (LKSA) Rumah Penyantun Muhammadiyah, Kota Banda Aceh ini bertujuan untuk membantu para siswi mengembangkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Metode pelaksanaan program dilakukan dengan menggunakan beberapa game edukasi yang menyenangkan. Program berlangsung selama delapan pertemuan pada bulan Desember 2022 dan melibatkan sejumlah remaja putri yang masih duduk di Sekolah Menengah Atas. Hasil dari program menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan game edukasi dapat menumbuhkan minat dan meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris. Oleh karena itu, program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini memiliki manfaat yang signifikan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa inggris para siswi SMA, serta menumbuhkan minat belajar bahasa inggris di masa yang akan datang. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dapat menjadi salah satu solusi dalam mengatasi kendala-kendala yang dihadapi dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris di Indonesia. Melalui partisipasi dari elemen masyarakat, pembelajaran bahasa inggris dapat menjadi lebih efektif dan menyenangkan bagi para siswi SMA.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris merupakan Lingua Franca dunia yang harus dipelajari oleh seluruh anak di Indonesia. Diharapkan seluruh lapisan masyarakat berpartisipasi dalam rangka membantu seluruh anak Indonesia untuk dapat berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris. Untuk itu, pengabdian masyarakat yang diadakan pada bulan Juli 2022 di Gampong Lam Raya ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan semangat anak-anak untuk belajar bahasa Inggris, khususnya dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan yang menyenangkan dan menarik dengan penggunaan flashcard sebagai media pembelajaran. Kartu flash berwarna-warni ditunjukkan kepada anak-anak dan mereka diminta untuk menebak gambar dari kartu flash dan versi bahasa Inggris disebutkan setelahnya. Selanjutnya, ketika versi bahasa Inggris disebutkan baik anak-anak maupun guru mengulangi kata-kata itu bersama-sama dengan keras. Hasil dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah anak-anak sangat antusias dan tidak bosan dalam belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan flashcard. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan flashcard dalam mengajar kosakata bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan semangat anak-anak dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan memungkinkan anak-anak belajar bahasa Inggris melalui pendekatan yang menyenangkan. English is the world’s Lingua Franca, which has to be learned by all children in Indonesia. It is expected that all levels of the community to participate in order to help all Indonesian children to be able to communicate in English. For that reason, this community service that was held in July 2022 in Gampong Lam Raya, aimed to improve children’s passion to learn English, especially in learning English vocabulary with a pleasant and fun approach with the use of flashcards as the media for learning. The colorful flashcards were shown to the children and they were asked to guess the images form of the flashcards and the English version was mentioned afterwards. Henceforward, when the English version was mentioned both children and teacher repeated the words together loudly. The result of this community service was that the children were very enthusiastic and were not bored with learning English vocabulary by using flashcards. It can be concluded that the use of flashcards in teaching English vocabulary can improve children’s passion for learning English and it lets the children learn English through a fun approach.

Abstract

This research delves into the portrayal of moral values in the renowned movie "Slumdog Millionaire" and their impact on the perceptions of fifth-semester students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh. The study aimed to explore how cinematic representations of moral values could both inspire and educate students. Using a close-ended questionnaire with a Likert scale, data were collected from the students. The questionnaire was designed to assess students' perceptions regarding moral values depicted in the film, including belief in God, hard work, honesty and trustworthiness, perseverance, love and belonging, inspiration, positive thinking, patience, and self-confidence, with responses ranging from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree). The research findings suggest that "Slumdog Millionaire" effectively conveys a spectrum of moral values, with belief in God, hard work, and honesty and trustworthiness being the most favorably perceived. Moreover, the film is widely regarded as inspirational, encouraging students to integrate these values into their lives. This study underscores the pivotal role of cinema in shaping students' perceptions of moral values, with "Slumdog Millionaire" emerging as a source of both inspiration and education, illustrating the potential of visual storytelling in imparting essential life lessons among fifth-semester students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh.
