Abstract

Digital marketing optimization is a society service program done by lecturers and student of the English Department at Universitas Negeri Semarang. The society service is aimed at empowering a local community called Dheling Arts Community in Rogomulyo Village, Semarang Regency to develop their Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) focusing on bamboo working. The community's life (93%) highly depends on traditional farming and bambooworking. In selling and marketing bambooworking products, the community relies on consignment selling and marketing which relatively give small profit. consignment selling and marketing methods are challenged its effectiveness amidst digital development not to mention digital marketing and business. Thus, the empowerment program is performed to give the underlying concept of digital marketing and business so that the SME can reach wider potential buyers using digital marketing tools and platforms. This program was conducted using Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) emphasizing the active targeted society involvement. The program resulted in a better understanding of the digital marketing concept. In addition, the local community successfully created a digital marketing media and an e-commerce account to market and sell their products of bamboo working.

Abstract

In this essay, I want to analyze how maternal instinct is depicted in one short story which has South East Asia as a setting of place because this maternal instinct has became one of the most debatable issues in feminist study until nowadays. The main data is a short story entitled Broken. This short story was included in anthology of Asian short stories entitled A Rainbow Feast. One thing which becomes uniqueness in Broken that picks my interest is how this novel exploits woman acts and habits in different way than any other novel. VerenaTay through this novel tells a story about one particular woman and how she treats her newborn baby. Different with other novel, Broken pictures the woman who lives in different world than us, a human. It is interesting to see how VrenaTay pictures that woman acts and somehow lives after she was dead, how a woman escapes from subversive condition and move toward dominant one by leap through the limit of life and death.

Abstract

This paper talks about Bhabha’s Mimicry’s idea in Orwell’s novel entitled Animal Farm. Postcolonialism theory is used to analyze the Animal Farm since the novel portrays the dynamic of animals’ lives after being freed from human colonization. Bhabha’s mimicry is utilized to demonstrate Napoleon and his pig family as the principal data that portrays animals that are imitating a human as a result of human’s colonization. The animal is known as the foe of humankind on the ranch that they live. Mimicry ideas utilized are Bhabha’s both ambivalence and term the same but not quite. Those ideas are practised to uncover the pig’s propensity and act that represents postcolonial discourse. The mimicry in Animal Farm begins with Old Major’s discourse that is contaminating all animals on the ranch with his feeling of inadequacy towards the man. It results in another form of colonization directed to the animals as the colonized.

Abstract

This study analyzes James Michener’s Hawai’i to underline how the environment was changed, altered and transformed over time based on differing paradigms of conceptualizing nature and environment. It primarily focuses on how the Native Hawai’ians, American settlers and Chinese immigrants have contrasting ways of perceiving the more-than-human world. The stages of environmental history, as underlined by Worster and Cronon argue how the differing paradigm is intertwined within the cultural contexts and socio-historical circumstances of a particular ethnicity in Hawai’i. Their paradigm manifested through social reproduction resulting from the mode of production, either instrumentalising or respecting the land. Moreover, race, social status and gender also problematize how the environment is conceptualized. From the perspective of environmental history, the environment is positioned as dynamic and changing, contrary to a prior depiction of nature as passive and static. The finding suggests that environmental perspectives in the novel Hawai’i can provide an avenue to reinterpreting human and non-human relationships by considering humanity as part of the natural world.
