Abstract

Idrus was a noteworthy writer in Indonesian in the course of Japanese authority. His fight in being rebellious counter to the regime at that period was noticeable through his writings, which made him familiar as a frank writer. His works were then translated into English. The translated works, nevertheless, do not communicate precisely the analogous implication as they were in the source language. Putting on Zepetnek’s Expressive Mechanisms in analyzing Idrus’ Heihois advantageous in this study in accepting whether the messages in the text to be translated (TT1) are well informed in the translated text (TT2). The results show that the TT2 of Idrus’ Heihois not able to send detailed apathy headed for Japanese propaganda as it was in the TT1. Cultural and period gaps are worth mentioning to be reflected in the interpretation process.

Abstract

Being old brings about many consequences which are mostly negative. Viewed as physically weaker, mentally unstable, and socially dependent are driven to a hard time where they need to cope with those bad labels. Successfull geriatrics can pass through the hard time by maintaining their self esteem to meet with self concept. However, not all geriatrics can come to such situation. They are trapped with the labels addressed to them and fail in maintaining the self esteem. Sometimes, alcoholism becomes one of the outlets to lessen the burdens. The Iceman Cometh is the portrayal of how the aged characters run away from bitter reality to alcoholism which is considered the best way to lessen their psychological burden. Therefore, the mode of maladjustment in facing problems which is best viewed from psychological perspective becomes an outstanding facet of the play.

Abstract

Daisy Miller: A Study (1878), broadly, is an analysis of various tensions between Europe and America. As the title character and her family travel abroad, they are confronted with customs and traditions of old Europe. An independent and stubborn young woman, Daisy Miller is unwilling to accept these old ideas, as do many Americans living abroad. As a representative of a newer, more liberal method of social interaction, she struggles in an old, conservative society. Daisy Miller: A Study focuses on the behavior of its characters in social situations. Most of the action involves Daisy’s social missteps, followed by discussion of those missteps. Characters constantly refer to their social status and are engaged in bettering their places. Those characters that represent the Europeanized-Americans always consult the European culture and its social values as the standard for judging Daisy’s attitudes. Their judgments are based on the European moral values. This means that, there is a kind of ethnocentrism in the way they think that European culture is superior, and this point of view results in cultural incongruity.

Abstract

This study focuses on the comparison between the image of totok Tionghoa-Indonesian and peranakan female characters, particularly in the economic, educational and marital spheres in Indoneisan Literature, namely Pecinan: Suara Hati Sang Perempuan Tionghoa written by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim. The foundation of the theory used is the socialist feminism proposed by Alison Jaggar who adopted the spirit of Marxism in the context of feminism. The research method applied is descriptive qualitative. The results show that totok Tionghoa-Indonesian women received more pressure than peranakans. Peranakan women have wider social space because they have already had legitimate citizenship. The conclusion of this study is that it is inevitable for women to be marginalized in the production process in the perspective of socialist feminism, since gender discrimination has become part of human nature that is very difficult to change.
