Abstract

Premna serratifolia known as bebuas has long been used by Malay comunity for both food and traditional medicine. The most notable advantage of this plant is to heal woman after childbirth and to raise the notion that contains anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds. In this study, the hexane extract of bebuas was only contained steroids. Meanwhile the ethanol extract contained various secondary metabolites such as phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids and saponins. The ethanol extract was further separated since the targeted compound isolate was an alkaloid. The isolate obtained was a yellow crystal which transformed to yellow oil after being exposed to air. The anti-inflammatory evaluation of the compound gave a result with a strong activity with ED50 = 4.06 mg/KgBW. Characterization by UV-Vis and FT-IR showed that the isolate’s spectra pattern had similarities with bufotenine. It revealed that the isolate shared the same basic skeleton with the bufotenine, especially the indole skeleton. Furthermore, it also shared the same physical form with bufotenine. These evidences strengthened the assumption that the isolate was an indole alkaloid.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the activity of pearl grass (rumput mutiara, Hedyotis corymbosa) in inhibiting growth of bacterial and fungi causing diseases in poultry. The current study used 3000 gram of sorted and cleaned pearl grass from dust and other weeds. This study employed sample collection, extraction, fractionation, preparation of medium of Agar and Mueller Hinton Broth, culturing bacterial, antimicrobial test and measuring minimum inhibitory concentrations. Extraction was conducted by maceration of pearl grass with methanol for five days followed by evaporating in vacuo to get methanol extract. The extract was then fractionated by adding hexane or acetic acid and ethyl acetic or sodium bicarbonate or n-buthanol to get fraction of hexsane, acid ethyl acetic, base ethyl acetic, n-buthanol. Each fraction was then tested with microbial test that were Salmonella sp, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. The results showed that each fraction at 2 % of concentration could inhibit bacterial growth except for Candida albicans that was not inhibited by any fraction of pearl grass. The minimum inhibitory concentrations was 0.4 – 0.8% (4 mg/ml – 8 mg/ml) indicating that pearl grass fractions were highly active on inhibiting bacterial growth that cause poultry diseases and the inhibiting activity on E. coli was found higher than that on Salmonella sp.

Abstract

The present research aimedto isolate the compound from the acetone fractions of pedada leaves (Sonneratia caseolaris) and test its antioxidant activity. The extraction wasperformed usinga multi-stage maceration method. The separation and purification were done using a vacuum and gravitational column chromatography whereasthe antioxidant activity was tested with theDPPH method. The structural elucidation of the compound was performed by spectroscopy data of UV, IR, alsoone- and two-dimensional NMR. The appearance of the pure isolate was odorless yellow crystal. Based on the spectroscopy data, the compound wasstigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol. The activity testing of the extract antioxidant and pure isolate with IC50showed a value of 166.2 ppm dan 134.4 ppm, respectively.

Abstract

Food is a basic need for every human being to grow and maintain life. In food there is what is called BTP or Food Additives. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 033 of 2012 concerning food additives , boric acid or borax is one of the types of food additives that are prohibited from being used in food products. However, in reality many people still use boric acid as BTP in producing food. The purpose of this study was to identify and determine boric acid levels in food samples. Quantititative analysis was performed using the liquid curcumamine addition method, while quantitative analysis used the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method at a maximum wavelength of 540 nm. The results of the identification and determination of boric acid levels showed that sample A had a color change from purplish red to brick red which indicated that the food sample was positive for containing boric acid. The average level of boric acid in sample A was 986.947 ppm. The %RSD value obtained is 1.583% which indicates that this test has good precision.
