Land in the coastal area has not been optimally utilized for agricultural land due to a number of issues, both economically and in terms of cultivation practices. An idea for maximizing the land's potential so that it can be more productive and deliver concrete benefits to the community is required. Sunflower cultivation is one technique to make use of coastal land. The goal of this study was to see how well sunflowers grew and yielded on unused land in coastal areas. The study used a randomized block design, with treatments of three sunflower kinds and two accessions repeated three times. The findings revealed that sunflowers have the potential to be grown on undeveloped land along the coast of the United States.

Abstract

Sunflower is one of the oil-producing plants that potentially can be developed as a food raw material, industrial, medicine, and cosmetics. Sunflower cultivation needs to be conducted in various lands in Indonesia; one of them is coastal regions. However, on one side, these lands were included on marginal land because the high level of salinity constrains it. This research aims to determine sunflower growth and thrive on salinity stress in the coastal land. This research applies a random group design with five treatments consisting of two accession and three sunflower varieties with three repetitions. The research result shows that the sunflower accession Ha1 growth and thrive on salinity stress in coastal land was quite significant compared to the accession Ha15 and Kanigara, Helina IPB, and BM1 IPB varieties. Generally, sunflower can adapt to stress salinity in coastal land.

Abstract

This article discusses the problems faced by women and their dignity to survive in the domination of a patriarchal cultural environment. This study uses prescriptive criticism from Cheri Register to analyze three short stories by Qaisra Shahraz entitled Zemindar’s Wife, A Pair of Jeans and The Elopement. The concept of prescriptive criticism from Cheri Register has four criteria that supposed to be found in literary works, namely serves as a forum for women, helps to achieve cultural androgyny, provides role-models, promotes health and augment consciousness-raising systems. The results showed that the main female characters; Noor, Miriam and Rubiya can survive in the dominant patriarchal culture with the dignity to resist in the patriarchal culture. These three stories successfully covered four prescriptive criteria by Register and can be classified as feminist stories.

Abstract

Abstract

Many foreign writers have expressed their fascination with Bali in their works, among them are Jamie James in Andrew and Joey: a tale of Bali and Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat, Pray, Love. The two authors wrote about Bali from their personal experience dring their stay in that island. Some images created in the works are seen and analyzed through the prespective of Postcolonialism and New Criticism. This article presents how the two authors depicts Bali as an extravagant place in Eastern country which has adopted some Western values. The negative image is delivered to oppose the idea of Bali as the perfect island; moreover, as part of Indonesia, Bali still has some weaknesses to strengthen and truly support that it is part of Indonesia. The writer admits that this article is far from perfect. Due to the limitation of thinking and time, some more aspects can be explored more profoundly in terms of the image of Bali in these two works. Hence, there are still a lot of literary works that also talk about and discuss the image of Bali. Hopefully, there will be anyone who, willingly or even the writer himself, could continue the research and find out more about the images of Bali from the Western perspective as seen in some other novels and works.
