Abstract

This study aimed to determine the needs of non-English Study Program students. Quantitative and survey methods were applied in this study. A questionnaire through the Graves model analysis consisting of student profile analysis, Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Current Situation Analysis (CSA), and Learning Situation Analysis (LSA) were the instruments used in collecting the data. Participants were the third-semester students of the Islamic Religious Education Study Program at Tarbiyah and Tadris Faculty of IAIN Bengkulu in 2018 to 2019 academic year. In determining the participants, the writers applied a simple random sampling technique. There were 37 students from a total population of 150 students. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, namely by calculating percentage (%) and classified data so that the needs of students in learning English could be identified. The findings were (1) the ESP approach was the right approach to be applied in learning English at IAIN Bengkulu based on the students’ age and experience in learning English, (2) the gap between the targeted needs by the campus and the students’ English skills was less, (3) the gap between what students needs and the material in the ESP English textbook was in category desire, and (4) the topic of reading comprehension text was directly related to the study of Islamic Religious Education as a student’s area of ​​expertise.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the effect of critical reading strategy on student's reading ability in comprehending expository text of the second grade students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in the academic year 2019/2020. This research used quantitative research with quasi experimental design. The total population of students at the second grade was 312 students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in the academic year 2019/2020. The research chose two classes as the samples of the research. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique. The second grade students of XI MIPA 2 was experimental class who were taught using Critical Reading Strategy and the second grade students of XI MIPA 1 was control class who were taught by the teacher. The data were collected by using test. The data were analyzed by using T-test formula. The mean score in experimental class was 79.90 while the mean score of control class was 72.31. The mean different between them was 7.59. The result of t-test showed that the value of t-count (3.970) was higher than t-table (2.024) in df 38 (0.05). Therefore, the alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the result above, the research finding was Critical Reading Strategy was effective on students’ reading ability in comprehending expository text for the second grade students of MAN 1 (MODEL) Lubuklinggau in academic year of 2019/2020.

Abstract

The purpose of this study to investigate whether brainstorming strategy can improve the students’ speaking ability. The subject of research was XI IPA 2 in Academic year 2020/2021. The design of this research is classroom action research (CAR). The researcher evaluates the students’ speaking in five forms those are, Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Before doing cycle 1 the researcher gave speaking test of pre-cycle, based on the result the test in pre-cycle; the researcher gave treatments of action 1 and action 2 they are planning, implementing, observing and reflecting to see improvement of students’ speaking ability after the treatments were given. The brainstorming strategy can improve the students’ speaking ability in two cycle. Then the researcher find out there is a significance difference between the mean score of students’ speaking ability in cycle 1 (62,24) and the mean score of students’ speaking ability in cycle 2 (75,68). There is impact of cycle 2 and the result can achieve the criteria of success. By comparing the means, the researcher concluded that improvement students’ speaking ability through brainstorming strategy is an effective to develop students’ speaking skill. Therefore, English teacher are encourage to teach speaking through brainstorming strategy.

Abstract

This research is about the use of word walls technique to improve students’ writing ability in descriptive text. There are some problems that faced by the students at the seventh grade students of SMPN 17 Kota Bengkulu in writing descriptive text the first is they do not have idea to write descriptive text. Second, they still confused in organizing the writing. Third, they often do some mistakes with the lack of knowledge in vocabularies. The objective of this research was to improve students’ writing ability in descriptive text using word walls technique. This research used classroom action research method that consisted of four steps, there are pre-assessment, cycle I, cycle II, and cycle III. The subject of this research was students of Class VII D in SMPN 17 Kota Bengkulu. They were 24 students that consisted of 15 male and 9 female. The instruments of this research were interview, teacher and students’ observation checklist, writing test, and documentation. Based on the finding of this research, it showed that word walls technique could improve students’ writing ability in descriptive text. Students were active in the classroom and good interaction between teacher and students. The evaluation test administrated at the end of each cycle. The result of mean score on evaluation were pre-assessment (47,65), cycle I (59,36), cycle II (67,96), and cycle III (73,95). It could be concluded that there were improvement in every cycle, a significant different between the mean score of pre-assessment and cycle III namely 47,65 and 73,95. It showed that word walls technique could improve student’s writing ability in descriptive text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti pengaruh dari teknik snowball drilling terhadap kemampuan penguasaan kosakata. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua sekolah menengah pertama negeri 05 Bengkulu yang terdiri dari 195 siswa sedangkan samplenya sebanyak 49 siswa yang diambil dari dua kelas. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode quasi eksperimen dimana siswa dibagi menjadi dua kelompok group eksperimen dan group control. Gropu eksperimental mendapat perlakuan dengan menggunakan teknik snowball drilling sedangkan kelompok control tetap diajarkan dengan cara biasa. Pre test diberikan kepada kedua group sebelum digunakannya teknik snowball drilling. Untuk menganalisis data digunakan rumus statistic t-test. Setelah diterapkannya teknik snowball drilling siswa diberikan post test.  Hasil dari group experimental  adalah 70.00 dan group control 57.71. pada hipotesis testing t yang diperoleh lebih besar dari t table (4.880>2.021). Kesimpulan penelitian menunjukan bahwa teknik snowball drilling salah satu teknik yang effective untuk meningkatkan kosakata siswa pada Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) Negeri 05 Bengkulu.

Abstract

The Researcher aims for increasing students’ writing achievements through describing picture technique (a classroom action research at the eight grade students  of SMPN 14 Bengkulu Selatan in academic year 2013/2014). Because there was the students could not write good paragraph especially in descriptive paragraph and also was not appropriate technique to teach writing. So describing picture technique was effective to improve the students’ writing achievement. The researcher was classroom action research that consists of three steps there were pre-assessment and three cycles. Each cycle was given the implementation of action on teaching materials about describing picture. There were people, place, animals and the last cycle was given reflection and evaluation. This research took subject in the class VIII A of SMPN 14 Bengkulu Selatan. They were consist of 27 test, document, observation, using picture in writing processes. The data in this result of this research was collected by using test and the instrument was used pictures. The result of the research showed that the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Bengkulu Selatan could write good paragraph, especially used of organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics to write good paragraph. In pre test with average 44. 25 % was very poor, but after giving the action in each cycle the result of the students could write good paragraph and was improved with the last cycle got 72.70% was good. This research indicated that the used describing picture techniques could improve students’ writing achievement at the eight grade students of SMPN 14 Bengkulu Selatan year 2013/2014.
