Abstract

Abstract

This book investigates how culture, particularly national culture, in Indonesia has been shaped by the government policies from the Dutch colonial period in 1900s to the Reformation era in 2000s. It is an attempt to show the relationship between the state and culture around the process of production, circulation, regulation and reception of cultural policy through different regimes. Although this book discusses government policy, the author has realized that the book needs to overcome contradictions and confusions of cultural discourse by incorporating people as explanatory element. Many aspect of culturality may be influenced by the state, but according to Jones, “it is a field that is not stable and easy to shift that facilitates resistance, and is able to turn against the state, market and other institutions” (p. 31). Jones employs two postcolonial cultural policy tools to review the history of cultural policy in Indonesia: authoritarian cultural policy and command culture. The first means that the state has assumption if majority of citizen do not have capability to inspirit a responsible citizenship and need a state’s direction in the choice of their culture. On the contrary, command culture shows that the cultural idea that is planned in fact always been placing the state as center in planning, creating policy and revising cultural practice.

Abstract

This article explores another variant of the emergence of the nationalism and anti colonialism idea. In the discourse of nationalism and anti-colonialism, much of attention from historians solely allocate to the rooted aspect of the formation of the nation, while there is a forgotten that the nationalism awareness and the anti-colonial sensitivity also can sprout from the mobility or travel of the community or individual far beyond the homeland. This article wants to observe the mobile aspects of the imagination and the action of anti-colonialism and nationalism from this type of individuals, called expatriate patriots, which was invented and awakened from their relationship that they interlaced during their odyssey in Europe. I argue, despite of their networks, interactions, experiences, model and method of actions were different, however, their impact on the discourse of nation formation was no doubt very important. Keywords: expatriate patriots, anti-colonialism, nationalism, and travel.

Abstract

This paper discusses the everyday life of the Tionghoa society in Batavia in the frst forty years of the twentieth century. The everyday life of the Tionghoa society in Batavia has so far been left unexplored. Existing studies on this particular group of people have mostly focused on the economic and political dimensions, for example the business activities of the Tionghoa society and the policy of discrimination for and against them made by successive governments in Indonesia. This paper shows that the social dimension can be an effective approach to study the many issues of the topic.

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the roots of the Bandung Conference of 1955 by tracing the alliance of Asian and African worldwide internationalism and anti-imperialism that existed since the early twentieth century. It attempts to show that although the conference emerged during the height of the Cold War, the network behind this alliance had gradually developed since the interwar period. The solidarity of this alliance lay in the common history of the colonized people that struggled to become sovereign. Contacts, meetings and conferences that took place in Europe and Asia juxtaposed the anti-imperialist movement of Asian and African countries. This article argues that the Bandung Conference 1955 was the culmination of relationships and connections of an Afro-Asian group who had been long oppressed by colonialism, racism and class superiority.

Abstract

This article examines the religious transformation of the Muslim middle class and its relationship with the growing sharia market in post-New Order Indonesia. It argues that in the Indonesian neo-liberal era, this spiritual revival considerably influenced the economic realm. The transformation of piety of the Indonesian middle class marked the emergence of new potential economic markets. It was responded to enthusiastically by markets producing selective products with a spiritual content. In its process, the role of spiritual lifestyle agents played a pivotal role in helping and shaping the new urban middle class who consume Islam to mark their Islamic identity. It was then that the energetic blending between Islamic piety and capitalism occurred in contemporary Indonesia. Islamic symbolic consumption becomes a new source of spiritualism as well as a source of religious identification. However, this article argues that this process tends to oversimplify Islam as a ‘material process’ rather than a ‘spiritual process’.
