Perkembangan nasionalisme pada paruh pertama abad ke-20 sering dianggap sebagai hasil dari komitmen bersama yang berjalan linear dengan kemunculan elit modern Indonesia. Kajian ini mengeksplorasi orientasi politik dan gagasan kebangsaan yang berkembang di Bali untuk menunjukan adanya partikularitas dalam merespon perkembangan nasionalisme Indonesia. Meskipun kelompok elit terdidik di Bali cukup giat dalam mensuarakan gagasannya mengenai kemajuan, orientasi politik mereka condong ke dalam menyangkut tentang persoalan domestik. Tulisan ini berargumen bahwa ada kompleksitas dari dalam masyarakat Bali menyangkut kasta, adat dan tradisi yang tidak tertembus oleh ide-ide modern.The development of nationalism in early 20th century is commonly presumed as a result of commitment which run linear with the emergence of the Indonesian modern elites. This research explores political orientation and national consciousness surfacing in Bali to explain particularities responding the rise of the Indonesian nationalism. Although the Balinese-educated-elites were fairly active in articulating their ideas of progress, they had very much inward orientation which mainly concerned with local/domestic issues. This article eventually argues that the main problem revolves around the complexity of its society related with caste system, custom and tradition that remained inpenetrable by the modern ideas.

Siding with the Enemy: Reluctant Mobilization and the Colonial Anxiety, the Netherlands Indies in the Brink of the Japanese Invasion Uji Nugroho Winardi

After the Netherlands was occupied by the Germany NAZI, the Dutch colonial state in the Indies was reaching to the edge of the Pacific War. To deal with the situation, the colonial government endeavored many attempts to boost the defense of the colonial state especially by advancing up their army’s weaponry and mobilizing manpower. Although gained robust support to modernize the weapons, the government only had a little success to infuse manpower to their forces. This article mainly discusses the considerations within the circle of the colonial government in order to improve the defense of the Netherlands Indies. It seeks to the answer for the question on why the colonial government’s plan to mobilize manpower only met few successes. It eventually argues that the anxiety and the attitude of the colonial government impeded their own plan to improve the defense.

The district of Gunungkidul was chosen as a potential area for the adoption of a new approach in Community Engagement (CE) program. Participatory mapping, reinforced by the application of the Geographic Information System (GIS) as a new approach, became a breakthrough amid the vastness of humanities, which still seems to be fragmented in each study program. Terefore, a platform is neended to optimize the potential of FIB UGM to address the diversity of cultural aspects in a community. Tis CE is designed to empower both parties at once, ie community and college. For the community, recollecting of their cultural properties can be a powerful capital for potential development with a structured and accessible database. Tis cultural richness helps them to initiate and implement the sustainable village development programs. Strengthening and developing their identity and integrity of local culture can be achieved if their overall potential can be mapped. For the college, CE becomes a model that can provide more mature readiness in actualizing its “tri dharma”, either through the preparation of human resources and methodological reinforcement.

Te existence of ancient grave sites in Banyuwangi save the potential of historical data to uncover the origins of Javanese civilization. However, the sites have been damaged by the activity of looting graves in the last ffteen years. Tis Community Engagement Activity aims to identify socio-economic issues and the substance of the object of the site study to stop looting and raise the potential of ancient tombs academically and politically concerning historical heritage management policies, as well as ocioeconomically for the local community. Community Engagement Activities was conducted in November 2015. Te team found that the looting of grave sites by residents was motivated by economic problems. Nevertheless, the problem network is rooted in the political aspect of the absence of a policy that places the ancient site’s grave as an area of cultural heritage. Tis issue is closely related to the low level of awareness of government and citizens. In addition, there are complex issues concerning the ownership and management of the land area of the grave site, which is a coﬀee plantation.

AbstractThe Department of History conducted a community service (PkM) on the topic of documenting and writing family history in Beji Village, Ngawen, Gunung Kidul. The PkM activities are conducted by lecturers and students of History in six months in 2019. Writing and documenting family history is carried out in a participatory method by a coloboration with village residents. The PkM activities were carried out in three stages. First, on May 4, 2019 a dialogue was held between the PkM team and the village stakeholders regarding the plan to write and document the family history of Beji Village. Secondly, on July 15, 2019 the PkM team observed the Nyadran process held by the Beji Village community. Third, the PkM team provides assistance in writing family history and documenting important figures who intersect with culture and art, cultural traditions, and multicultural identities in Beji Village. At the end of this PkM activity, a family history of the village leader has produced, namely the family history of Mbah Yatmo, a prayer reader at the Sadranan ceremony in Beji Village.----------AbstrakDepartemen Sejarah melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) dengan topik pendokumentasian dan penulisan sejarah keluarga di Desa Beji, Ngawen, Gunung Kidul. Seluruh kegiatan PkM dilakukan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa Ilmu Sejarah dalam waktu enam bulan pada tahun 2019. Penulisan serta pendokumentasian sejarah keluarga yang dilakukan secara partisipatif bersama warga. Kegiatan PkM tersebut dilaksanakan dalam tiga tahapan kegiatan. Pertama, pada 4 Mei 2019 diadakan dialog antara tim PkM dan pemangku desa mengenai rencana penulisan dan pendokumentasian sejarah keluarga Desa Beji. Kedua, pada 15 Juli 2019 tim PkM melakukan observasi proses Nyadran yang diselenggarakan oleh masyarakat Desa Beji. Ketiga, tim PkM melaksanakan pendampingan penulisan sejarah keluarga dan pendokumentasian tokoh penting yang bersinggungan dengan kebudayaan dan kesenian, tradisi kultural, dan identitas multikultural di Desa Beji. Pada akhir kegiatan PkM ini dihasilkan contoh penulisan sejarah keluarga tokoh desa, yaitu sejarah keluarga Mbah Yatmo, seorang pembaca doa dalam upacara Sadranan di Desa Beji.
