Abstract

The aim of this research was to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy on the tenth grade students at MA Unggulan Nuris Jember. The research design used was quasi experimental research specifically post test only non equivalent group design . The respondent of the research was chosen by using cluster random sampling by a lottery . The students of X IPA A as the experimental group and X PK B as the control group. The data was collected by interview, documentation and administering reading comprehension test. Then the data collected were analyzed by using independentt sample T-test . It was known that the mean score of the experimental group was 78.80 and the mean score of the control group was 73.73. In the output of the t-test column, it was shown that the significant value was 0.03. It was lower than 0.05. It means that the mean scores of the two classes (experimental and control groups) were different. Therefore, there was a difference between the experimental class and the control class. In conclusion, the use of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy was a significantly affected on the tenthgrade students’ reading comprehension achievement tat MA Unggulan Nuris Jember. Abstract

Vocabulary has a very important role in learning English. Without having good ability in vocabulary, learning English cannot be achieved well. Therefore, students’ vocabulary achievement must be enhanced. One of the ways to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement is by using online dictionary. This classroom action research with cycle model from Kemmis & Mc Taggart aimed to enhance the eighth grade students’ vocabulary achievement by using online dictionary and to know how it could enhance the students’ participation during the teaching and learning process of vocabulary. The research participants were the VIII J students of MTsN 5 Ngawi, East Java, Indonesia. The data were collected by using a vocabulary test and observation during the teaching and learning process of vocabulary. Quantitative and qualitative descriptive analyses were used to analyze the collected data. The research results showed that there was improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement and their active participation by using online dictionary. The improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement was from 67.64% of the students got target score in pre-cycle to 82.35% of the students got the target score in the first cycle. The improvement of the percentage of the students’ participation was 75% in pre-cycle to 83.7% in the first cycle. Hence, it is suggested for English teachers to use online dictionary in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary to improve the students’ active participation and their vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to enhance the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and to know how CSR enhanced the students’ participation during learning process of reading comprehension. The research participants were the VIII A grade students of SMPN 1 Pakusari. The data were collected by using reading comprehension test and observation during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension. After that, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistic to know the students’ reading comprehension achievement and their participation after being taught using CSR. The results showed that the use of CSR could enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement and participation in reading comprehension class. Hence, it is suggested for English teachers to use CSR in process of teaching and learning reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was aimed at improving the eighth-grade students’ reading achievement and their participation during teaching-learning proses using the QAR Strategy. This research applied CAR design with grade eight students of secondary school as the research participants. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic to know how students’ reading comprehension achievement and the students’ participation could get improvedafter being taught using QAR strategy. This research was conducted in 1 cycle. The result of this research shows that the use of the QAR Strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement and the students’ participation during the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this research were to find the causes of Indonesian EFL learners’ writing anxiety and how they cope with writing anxiety at one of the state junior high schools located in the rural area of Banyuwangi. In this study, the researcher employed a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with the five participants who potential experienced in writing anxiety. The findings of this study revealed that the causes of writing anxiety were internal cause, external causes, and linguistic causes. The internal causes include psychological sources. External causes include: (1) classroom practices and (2) interpersonal threats. While, lingusictic cause include writing aspects. In addition, the strategies that the Indonesian EFL learners use to cope with writing anxiety was categorized into a theme named strategies to cope writing anxiety.

Abstract

This research was intended to find the effect of using short movies on the eleventh grade students’ listening comprehension. The research design used was quasi-experimental research design with non-equivalent class post-test design. The research context was purposive methods. The research participant was eleventh grade students of SMAN Kalisat. The data collection method was an English listening test with multiple choice and true-false question format. The result of the analysis showed that the test had high content validity with the percentage of 100% valid items. The test also very reliable with the reliability index 0.927 based on Guttman Split-Half Coefficient. The result of difficulty index of the try out test showed that in the multiple choice questions there were 3 items categorized as easy, 17 items were categorized as fair, and 5 items were categorized as difficult. In the true/false questions there are 3 items categorized as easy, 10 items were categorized as fair items, and 2 items were categorized as difficult. The T-test with equal variances assumed, t=-3,686 and p=0,002(<0,05) showed significant difference in the means between two classes. The result of the analysis showed that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, meanwhile the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It means there was a significant effect between the experimental and control class after they received different treatment.

Abstract

The newest Merdeka Curriculum issued in 2021 began to be adopted by many high schools in Indonesia. However, not many studies were conducted on the technique used to teach English based on the curriculum. This descriptive case study aimed to investigate the technique used by an English teacher to teach English based on the Merdeka Curriculum as well as the teacher’s reasons for using the technique. The research data were collected through observations and interviews then the collected data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The research found that the English teacher used the Presentation technique to teach English based on the Merdeka Curriculum. Furthermore, the teacher chose the technique because could help the students develop their speaking skills, and let them improving their communication skills.

Abstract

This experimental research aimed to discover the effect of applying Group Investigation Method on vocational high school students’ reading comprehension. The participants were the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Jember. The research participants was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. Product Moment formula was applied to measure the reliability of the reading test. The reliability coefficient of the reading test was 0.70, meaning that the reading test was adequately reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of analysis revealed that the scores of reading test for the students in the experimental group were significantly different from the one in the control group at the significant level of 0.05. The t-test results indicate that applying Group Investigation Method significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. It is suggested that English teachers apply Group Investigation Method to teach and enhance students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the effect of using Podcast on listening achievement of the eighth grade students of Junior High School. Based on the preliminary study, it was known that the eighth grade students in one of the junior high school in Situbondo had never used Podcast as a medium of learning listening skill and the teacher often used audio from the internet to teach listening skill. This study applied quantitative method using quasi-experimental with post-test only design. The two classes at that school were chosen as participants for this research, one class belonged to experimental group and the other belong to control group. The students in experimental group were taught listening skill by using Podcast as a medium of learning, while the students belonged to control group were taught by listening to the teacher read the text. The data were analyzed by using Independent Sample t-test formula in SPSS. The results indicated that there was a significant effect of using Podcast on listening achievement of the eight grade students. It was proven that the significant value (2-tailed) was 0.001 and it was lower than 0.05.
