Abstract

In linguistic studies, semiotics is perceived as a sign composed of two inseparable elements, namely signifiant and signifier. Signifiant is a linguistic material whereas signifier is a concept in mind. Language is metaphorical and, hence, the meaning it produces fluxes in accordance with its context. By such logic, if a religious language is a collection of texts (signs) then it does not contain an ultimate meaning. Therefore, under this context semiotics plays its significant role in which the religious texts bear new understandings to actualize the universal Islamic messages and bring the mission of mercy for the universe (rahmatan lil ‘alamin).

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing linguistic stylistics describing how women and men presented in texts by applying a feminist approach, i.e. feminist stylistics. This research focuses not only on stylistics analysis that considers linguistic structure and how it affects society, but also on how the position of women as actors, as well as the position of ideas or events presented in the text. This research used a qualitative method. The words, phrases or sentences, and discourses reflecting gender-specific in the novel become the data of the research. The researchers use Mills' feminist stylistics theory to analyze the data. In this study, there are several tendencies of women or men associated with the text. In a collection of poems, it is often found several italics at the bottom, and it is to emphasize the topic of the poem concerned. This research shows that Rupi Kaur, as the author, seems to want readers to understand his poetry as much as what he wrote and wanted. In addition, this study found that gender-specific terms are mostly used to refer primarily to female gender.

Abstract

The research found how the realization of swear word in RS’s case in twitter. By analysed the tweet to know how the realization of use swear word trough the motive has used to find out the reasons use swear words related to the RS’ case. The motive has found how to realization swear word in RS’s case are psychological motive, social motive and linguistic motive. Supporting research by analysed the tweets related in RS’s case, as many 121 clauses were obtained. It found psychological motive is the most motive has used by twitter’s users.

Abstract

In recent years, a number of literary works, such as poetry, short stories, and novels that describe the tourist attraction of Lake Toba as the background or focus of the story is getting increased. This article aims to describe the landscape and tourist routes of Parapat in Tepi Toba novel by using descriptive qualitative method. Data is collected by close reading, recording, and quoting techniques and analyzed with a literary tourism approach. The results of the analysis show that Tepi Toba novel is not only about tourist’s activities, but also depicts the beauty of the hilly landscape of Parapat intensely and aesthetically filled with tourism supporting facilities and describes travel routes from and to Parapat and tourist travel routes in Parapat. The novelty of this analysis is that Tepi Toba novel has a dual function, namely as a story medium and tourism promotion. This article contributes to providing a new way of looking at the link between literature and tourism promotion.

Abstract

This study aims to find out types of nominalization used in Priyanka Chopra’s selected speeches and the realizations. The selected speeches were taken from written sources and videos on the internet consisting of three speeches. This research used a descriptive qualitative method by applying theory of nominalization in Systemic Functional Linguistics by Quirk et al. The data collection techniques were conducted by applying a documentation method. The documents used to support this study were in the form of videos and transcriptions of the speeches on the internet. The results showed that not all the three types of nominalization were used in the three selected speeches. The nominalization with the gerundive noun type was used in all the three selected speeches. There were 6 gerundive nouns (14.6%) in the first speech, 7 gerundive nouns (25%) in the second speech, and 4 gerundive nouns (21%) in the third speech. The nominalization with verbal noun type was only used 1 (2.4%) among the three selected speeches which was in the first speech. Meanwhile, the deverbal noun type was used most in all the three selected speeches. There were 34 deverbal nouns (83%) in the first speech, 21 deverbal nouns (75%) in the second speech, and 15 deverbal nouns (79%) in the third speech. The nominalizations were realized by suffixations and conversions. The nominalizations were formed in the presence of the suffixes –dom, -er, –ing, -ion, -ity, -ment, and -or. Also, they were formed by conversion, such as the nouns care, cause, experience, and waste.

Abstract

This research aims to know the meaning from the semiotic signs on the movie poster. The data is collected from movie poster “the shutter island” which is taken from internet site. This study used qualitative approach since the researcher focused on identifying the sign found in the movie poster of The Shutter Island. This study applied some theories of semiotics, there are theory of sign by Saussure (1974) and some other theories such as Theory of  Colour  Term by Wierzbicka (1996) which is used for identifying the meaning of colors found in the movie poster and Verbal and Visual Aspect Theory by Dyer (1986) which applied for identifying verbal sign and visual poster in this research. It can be concluded that there are two aspects which is formulated in movie poster Shutter Island, they are verbal and visual aspect. The verbal aspect includes some categories such as the masthead which exolained who is the main character in this movie, the title of the film to inform the audience about the film, where the line on the poster inform the audience the spoiled that it was the island where once people got into that island, it could be so difficult for the to get away from the island, and it shows the date the film will be released.

Abstract

North Sumatra literary works have represented Lake Toba tourism phenomena in the form of natural beauty, culture, and local wisdom. However, these works still need to get more attention from any researchers who link them to another way of promoting tourism. This study aims to analyze the four tourism components in Toba Dreams' novel and the role of the novel in developing Lake Toba's tourist destination. This study used a qualitative-interpretative method with a phenomenological paradigm. In obtaining the primary data, we used text, and in collecting the secondary data, we took from the library, observation, and interview methods. All primary data, i.e., attractions, amenities, access, and ancillary services, are analyzed using mimetic and literary tourism approaches by comparing them with secondary data acquisition. The results of this study show that the novel intensely and aesthetically depicts four tourism components, imitations of reality. The novelty of this study is that the Toba Dreams novel has a dual function as a medium for stories and as a promotion of Lake Toba tourism, especially tourist destinations in the

Abstract

This research aims to extract the mono-lexical and poly-lexical terms from linguistics domain in Indonesian language. As the terminology and lexicology concept is somehow blurry, this research applies CTT by Cabré to do the terms extraction procedure. The corpus-based terminology method is applied in this research to get the best mono-lexical and poly-lexical terms possible. To compile the general and the specialized corpus in this research, AntConc is applied as an instrument. Even though the result is noisy, further analysis about the term limitation manually makes this research semi-automatic. The result shows that the limitation in language and words structure helps this research to delimit the mono-lexical terms extracted in this research. Furthermore, the mono-lexical terms extracted act as the starting point for poly-lexical terms.

Abstract

Abstract: The application of approach contextual element inquiri in study write report by student class of Prodi Sastra Indonesia in writing courses. This study aimed to describe the difference of study result write report applying of approach contextual element inquiri and without applying approach contextual element inquiri. Population in this research is all class student of students Gasal 2019. This research sampel is 30 people from 110 existing population. This research use experiment method of pre-test design group one post test that is experiment which do not use comparator group. From data processing obtained by result of pre test with mean = 68.86, standard of deviasi = 10.33, standard of error = 1.92 and including at category very good counted 1 student or 3.33%, good category counted 12 student or 40%, category enough counted 15 student or 50%, and category less counted 2 student or 6.66%. Result of post test with mean = 81.11, standard of deviasi 10.78%, and standard of error = 2.00. Including at category very good counted 5 student or 16.66%, good category counted 23 student or 76.66%, and category enough counted 2 student or 6.66%. From data test result of and pre-test of post-test got result normal distribution. Of homogeneity test got that this research sampel come from homogeneous population. After test of normalitas, got by t0 equal to 4.38. Then, t0 consulted with tables of t level of signifikasi 5% with df=N-1=30-1=29, obtained by level of signifikasi 5% = 2.04. Because obtained t0 bigger than t that is 8.57 > 2.04. so, nul hypothesis (Ho) refused and hypothesis (Ha) accepted. Finally, can be concluded that there are difference which signifikasi between result of study write report applying of approach contextual element inquiri with result of study write report without applying of approach contextual element inquiri by class student of Prodi Sastra Indonesia of students Gasal 2019.Keywords:Approach contextual, Inquiri, Writing report.Abstrak: Penerapan pendekatan inquiri elemen kontekstual dalam pembelajaran menulis laporan oleh mahasiswa kelas Prodi Sastra Indonesia dalam kursus menulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan perbedaan hasil belajar menulis laporan penerapan pendekatan elemen kontekstual inquiri dan tanpa menerapkan pendekatan elemen kontekstual inquiri. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas Gasal 2019. Sampe penelitian ini adalah 30 orang dari 110 populasi yang ada. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen pre-test design group one post test yaitu eksperimen yang tidak menggunakan kelompok pembanding. Dari pengolahan data diperoleh hasil pre test dengan rata-rata = 68,86, standar deviasi = 10,33, standar kesalahan = 1,92 dan termasuk pada kategori sangat baik sebanyak 1 siswa atau 3,33%, kategori baik sebanyak 12 siswa atau 40%, kategori cukup dihitung 15 siswa atau 50%, dan kategori kurang dihitung 2 siswa atau 6,66%. Hasil post test dengan rerata = 81,11, standar deviasi 10,78%, dan standar kesalahan = 2,00. Termasuk pada kategori sangat baik sebanyak 5 siswa atau 16,66%, kategori baik sebanyak 23 siswa atau 76,66%, dan kategori cukup sebanyak 2 siswa atau 6,66%. Dari hasil pengujian data dan pre-test post-test didapatkan hasil distribusi normal. Dari uji homogenitas didapatkan bahwa sampel penelitian ini berasal dari populasi yang homogen. Setelah uji normalitas, didapat t0 sebesar 4,38. Kemudian, t0 dikonsultasikan dengan tabel t tingkat signifikasi 5% dengan df = N-1 = 30-1 = 29, diperoleh dengan tingkat signifikasi 5% = 2.04. Karena diperoleh t0 lebih besar dari t yaitu 8,57> 2,04. jadi, hipotesis nul (Ho) ditolak dan hipotesis (Ha) diterima. Akhirnya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikasi antara hasil penelitian menulis laporan penerapan pendekatan kontekstual elemen inquiri dengan hasil penelitian menulis laporan tanpa penerapan pendekatan kontekstual inquiri elemen oleh siswa kelas Prodi Sastra Indonesia siswa Gasal 2019.Kata kunci: Pendekatan kontekstual, Inquiri, Penulisan laporan.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is crucial for effective language acquisition, enabling learners to comprehend spoken and written words and articulate their thoughts. The PowToon application, with its engaging animated videos, offers an immersive and clear learning experience. This is particularly beneficial for English learners, where proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing is vital. This study investigates the impact of the PowToon application on enhancing students' vocabulary. Utilizing a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental Design, data were gathered through observations and tests. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics. The sample comprised 52 tenth-grade students at Tunas Pelita High School. The experimental group, which used PowToon, had a pretest average of 36.19 compared to the control group's 38.40. However, post-tests revealed a score of 82.31 for the experimental group and 71.70 for the control group, indicating a more significant vocabulary improvement in the PowToon cohort. The findings confirm that the PowToon application positively affects vocabulary acquisition. The research underscores PowToon’s potential to enhance students' comprehension, spelling, and pronunciation of English vocabulary, ultimately bolstering their overall learning outcomes.
