Abstract

This research was a follow-up research from some previous research which had discussed some imperative speech act, but it had not deeply discussed ordering speech act. The research aimed to find out the impact of translation techniques on shifting the meaning of ordering speech. The data were sentences which accommodate ordering speech act taken from the novel “Christ the Lord out of Egypt” and its translation in Indonesian taken from the novel “Kristus Tuhan Meninggalkan Mesir”. The data collected through document analysis, questionnaire, and forum group discussion (FGD). From the findings, there were 15 types of translation techniques which were used in translating, namely, established equivalent, variation, addition, implicit, explicit, adaptation, modulation, pure borrowing, generalization, particularization, transposition, reduction, paraphrase, discursive creation, and naturalized borrowing. The result indicates that the translation techniques that cause shifting meaning of ordering speech act are the addition, reduction, and discursive creation.

Abstract

Reduction in subtitling is inevitable due to technical rules of time and space as well as synchronization, i.e. displaying subtitle when the utterance/dialogue is spoken. Consequently, reduction leads to the loss of meaning incorporated into the subtitle. Reduction takes place within linguistic unit, such as word, group of words, even clause/sentence. Under the scrutiny of experiential dimension within ideational metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this qualitative study article discusses the results of a study on how far reduction of English Nominal Group (NG) elements as experiential structure has contributed to alteration of entity expression in the Indonesian subtitle of The Kingdom (2007), of which the objective data were collected by way of purposive sampling. The results show that reduction of English NG experiential structure set new expression of entity and even reduction of the NG main element, Thing, resulted in the loss of entity in the subtitle.

Abstract

Religious terms are the terms and expressions whose source is obtained anddominated by the book of one religion or more. This research aims at exploring the religious terms and expressions found in the book of "Islam: A Short History", their types, meanings, and examples of religious term and expression. This article is qualitative research in which the researcher explains the types and examples of the religious terms found in the book. There are 14 religious terms (10 from Newmark, 1 from Alghamdy, and 3 from Yulianita) that have been found in previous studies, but those (14) above have not covered all the religious terms in the book. After researching the book of Islam: A Short History, the researcher found 1 (one) new term needed to be included in order to accommodate all religious expressions, so it’s 15 after all. This 1 new religious term (owner of the religion) is the split from the previous term (supernatural being). It is separated because of the mismatch between the type and example. Moreover, after the research, religious terms are classified into two, namely Arabic and non-Arabic. They are classified based on how much impact of the Arabic gives to the religious term.

Abstract

Translation cannot be separated from culture; therefore, a translator must have sufficient knowledge about the culture of the language that is going to be translated. This knowledge will help the translator to determine the most suitable equivalent of any text containing cultural elements. Euphemism is one of the texts. Euphemism is used to replace an expression that considered threatening the face of the speaker, the audience or some third party when it is uttered. Sex is the topic that will offend people when it is talked about openly. People in every culture tend to use euphemism when they talk about sex. However, different culture will see sex with different point of view.  This study aims to find out the differences through the translation of English sexual euphemistic expression into Indonesian. It will describe how those expressions are translated into Indonesian. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The source of the data is an English novel by Eloisa James entitled Desperate Duchesses and its Indonesian version Memikat Kekasih. The result shows that English sexual euphemistic expressions in the novel are translated into Indonesian euphemisms, Indonesian dysphemisms, literal meaning, and description.

Abstract

Abstract. This paper attempts to unfold the phenomena of two different translation versions of culinary terms in film ‘Chef’, namely the subtitle version of ‘Siberian’ and of ‘Agent Nas’. The objectives of the study are to describe the translation techniques used in translating the culinary specific terms in each subtitle version and to explain the influence of the translation techniques used towards the accuracy, acceptability, and the readability of the culinary specific term translation. The study is a product, context, and participant-oriented translation research based on qualitative paradigm that employs a case study model. The data collection techniques are document analysis and focus group discussion and the data technique analysis adopt the principles of ethnography manifested in the use of domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis as well as finding cultural values. The result of the study shows that the two subtitlers have different frequency level in using the techniques and that the techniques used affect the quality of the culinary term translation. The most obvious distinction is that Siberian resorts to many pure borrowings compared to Agent Nas. This translates to a good score of accuracy, but potentially reduce the level of acceptability of the translation. In addition, Agent Nas resorts to annotation technique that is meant to improve the understanding of the viewers while Siberian does not. All in all, the overall translation quality of culinary terms produced by the two subtitlers is almost equal with Agent Nas version slightly better than Siberian. Keywords: culinary specific term translation; translation techniques; translation quality; subtitleAbstrak.
