Abstract

As a pioneer of Arabic phonetic scholar and a founder of Arabic linguistic and literature sciences, al-Khalîl is the master teacher for linguists after him. Nevertheless, the wind of skepticism upon the his linguistic thoughts, after it was firstly blown by some Orientalists, has been responded by some Arabian scholars by following their lines. The central discourse, which this article tries to deal with, is whether his linguistic thoughts were really his own? Being supposed to be the origins of al-Khalîl’s thoughts, Indians and Greeks have had the linguistic thoughts which are to be studied in this article by comparing them with those of al-Khalîl. The writer finds that the skepticism upon al-Khalîl’s linguistic thoughts can not be proved. Al-Khalîl has had his own thoughts which were not originated from neither India nor Greece.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate forms of propaganda spread by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as represented in an Arabic History Coursebook they prepare for ISIS’ school environments. It utilizes Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as its research method to examine and reveal values and ideologies behind choices of words, grammar, and text structures. Using an ISIS’ Arabic History Coursebook entitled Al-Tarikh: li al-Shaff al-Khamis al-Ibtida'i (published in 2016/1437H) as the data source, this research is primarily focused on the analysis of clauses and phrases which contain words of daulah and qital. The data were analysed utilizing functional linguistics and propaganda techniques as its analytical framework. Results of analyses show that as an organization ISIS fights for ideologies which underlie the idea of the Islamic State and spreads values of radicalism to its targeted communities. Propaganda techniques such as name calling, glittering generality, transfer, plain folk and bandwagon are found to be dominant in ISIS’ propaganda projects.

Abstract

One of the unique aspects in traditional Islamic scholarship is the using of isnâd system to report every saying from the author, particularly the prophetic hadîth. The so-strict attribution of isnâd to hadîth makes the sanad (p. asnâd; the chains of transmission) can not be detheched from the hadîth itself. Sanad is an element of hadîth in addition to râwî (collector) and matn (text of the hadîth). In further, sanad is regarded to as the source of the religion. This is because hadîth, from which Islamic doctrins are to be extracted, was transmitted by the authorities in the sanad. It is for this reason that the chains of transmission are of great attentions in the inqu ry of the authenticity of any hadîth. In exemining a hadîth from this aspect, as this article tries to elaborate, traditional Muslim specialists focused on three concerns: the continous connectivity of the chains of transmitter (itiṣâl al-sanad), the credibility of all transmitters (‘adâlah al-ruwât), and their intellectual capacity (ḍabṭ al-ruwât).

Abstract

Political Islam policy in the Dutch East Indies encouraged Muslim scholars to establish Islamic organizations, including, Nahdhlatul Ulama, as a channel for their activities. This is done for togetherness and a vehicle of unity. By organizing, it can create a common movement to avoid accusations of carrying out suspicious activities in religious matters from the colonial authorities. On the other hand, the role of the press in covering NU's activities is quite large. This organization is considered to have political and cultural capital that is important in the dynamics of Muslims in the Dutch East Indies. This article attempts to present a number of NU activities recorded by newspapers during the colonial period. Some of the news found is quite unique, because it covers the activities of this association to the regional level, such as in Kediri and Semarang. The search for information led to three aspects of concern to the NU between 1925 and 1942, namely the issue of the Al-Islam Congress, religious rituals and the response to the wild school policy. Some of the findings point to the social history side of NU's activities. This is also a marginal note for earlier historiography, which highlighted NU more in the lens of political history. Armed with historical research methods, a chronological study material is obtained that is close to the nuances of social history.

Abstract

Literary work is a product of a socio-political context and ideology that exist and develop within a particular society, and this applies to literary texts of religious genres, one of which is Shalawat Badr (the Shalawat Badrs). Drawing a theoretical framework from social semiotics, meaning making as a socio-cultural practice, this study analyzes the religious text of Shalawat Badr composed by KH Ali Manshur, a kiai (Muslim cleric) from Jember, East Java during the 1960s. Results of textual and contextual analysis of the Shalawat Badr text suggest that the author successfully blended this literary text of religious genre with the dynamics of political contexts of his time. This Shalawat Badr not only represents the author’s feelings and ideological orientations in searching for the ultimate meaning of life but also deliberate and purposeful engagement with the socio-political realities of his time. In particular, Shalawat Badr reflects the identity and medium of movement and resistance of the Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) to the dynamics of national politics especially at the end of the Old Oder era. Additionally, the textual material of Shalawat Badr highlights the socio-policital contestation of the Indonesian society in the Old Order, especially the resistance of Islamic boarding schools to the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) movement. Indeed, the meaning and attribution of Shalawat Badr continue to evolve with time, that is, from the political resistance and struggle of the Pesantren vis a vis the PKI to the practical electoral instrument of the Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) Party to becoming part of music business industry by Islamic music groups in the latest era.

Abstract

This article aims to discover the translation of the word auliyâ’ in QS. Al-Mâ’idah Verse 51 on a conservative Islamic website in Indonesia. In addition, to find out the power and discursive practice of the verse and uncover ideology in social practice. The study was qualitative research that used the text published on Portal-islam.id and Voa-islam.com as the primary source. In data analysis, the study applied Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. The study showed that Portal-islam.id and Voa-islam.com translated the word auliyâ’ as leaders. That is motivated by Hamka’s interpretation which prioritizes meaning compared to the reason for the revelation of the verse. For this understanding, conservative Islamic websites produce articles that support the prohibition of non-Muslims from becoming leaders.

Abstract

This study aims to identify linguistic expressions on utterances used in communication during ruqyah sharia happening. It is conducted using a pragmatic perspective and the descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data. Data from this research got from Youtube during the treatment of ruqyah sharia. This study used maxim theory to test the use of the cooperative principles among them during ruqyah sharia so we can get a system of the cooperative principle which is violated or obeyed by them. Based on findings and discussion, it can be seen the following. There are some conversations which violated by Ustadz and the patient conversation. There are about 2% violated the maxim of manner, 8% violated the maxim of relation, 5% violated the maxim of quality, and 3% violated the maxim of quantity. Some conversations are obeyed, namely 40 % obeyed the maxim of manner, 16 % obeyed the maxim of relation, 34% obeyed the maxim of quality, and 10 % obeyed the maxim of quantity. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that in ruqyah sharia, the theory of Grice (1975) about the cooperative principle can be tested in the use of the cooperative principle between ustadz and patients in the Indonesian context. Although the patient did not aware of his conversation, he can make good cooperative principles with Ustadz so the conversation can go smoothly and both speakers understand their conversation.
