Abstract

This study aims to investigate identical word pairs, word couples that have a phonemic correspondence, and the sound shift in phonological differences, sound variation, sound addition, and lenition. The study uses empirical data collected from 2 Yemeni college students who studied in Indonesia. Two hundred seven of Swadesh's basic vocabulary was used as the standard procedure for collecting data. The results indicated the relationship between form and meaning as a whole, a different pattern.  Specifically, the three dimensions - cognate, phonemic correspondence, and a pair of words contain a different pattern, sound-change, phonological, and morpheme contrast in Modern Arabic Standard, Sana’a Yemeni Arabic (YEMS), Dhamar Yemeni Arabic (YEMD). The other sound change in the form of metathesis exposes that there are six rules: five kinds of word syllable systems and dissimilation, three forms of sound addition, and four types of sound loss. This study focuses on sound correspondence in three Arabic languages that influence more variations of Arabic. MSA, YEMS, and YEMD represent a case where two distinct language varieties exist in Yemen. It is anticipated that the findings of this study will help college students and lecturers to understand a phenomenon in Arabic-speaking communities and the significant impact it has on arranging Arabic teaching materials. The value of this research work is evident from the fact that the Arabic language teaching model has neglected the teaching of Arabic variation even though they are essential.

Abstract

Literary work is a product of a socio-political context and ideology that exist and develop within a particular society, and this applies to literary texts of religious genres, one of which is Shalawat Badr (the Shalawat Badrs). Drawing a theoretical framework from social semiotics, meaning making as a socio-cultural practice, this study analyzes the religious text of Shalawat Badr composed by KH Ali Manshur, a kiai (Muslim cleric) from Jember, East Java during the 1960s. Results of textual and contextual analysis of the Shalawat Badr text suggest that the author successfully blended this literary text of religious genre with the dynamics of political contexts of his time. This Shalawat Badr not only represents the author’s feelings and ideological orientations in searching for the ultimate meaning of life but also deliberate and purposeful engagement with the socio-political realities of his time. In particular, Shalawat Badr reflects the identity and medium of movement and resistance of the Pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) to the dynamics of national politics especially at the end of the Old Oder era. Additionally, the textual material of Shalawat Badr highlights the socio-policital contestation of the Indonesian society in the Old Order, especially the resistance of Islamic boarding schools to the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) movement. Indeed, the meaning and attribution of Shalawat Badr continue to evolve with time, that is, from the political resistance and struggle of the Pesantren vis a vis the PKI to the practical electoral instrument of the Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) Party to becoming part of music business industry by Islamic music groups in the latest era.

Abstract

AbstractThis article aimed to examine the structure of Javanese singir as an adaptation work of poetry tradition originating from outside Javanese culture and its function for the reading community. This study compared the six Javanese singirs of the library of Universitas Indonesia (Singir Ahli Suwarga, Singir Dagang, Singir Kiamat, Singir Nasihat Jaman Akhir, Singir Patimah, and Singir Santri) with some Arabic and Malay poetry and then discussed them in the social context of Javanese coastal communities. Through a comparative structural approach and sociological studies, this article found that Javanese singir was structurally linked with Arabic poetry rather than with Malay poetry. This could be found in the metrum system which was close to the metrum of kamil majzu’, and various rhyming patterns which were a combination of murabba’ rhyme and muzdawij. The influence of Malay poetry in the six singirs seemed to have little effect, which was limited to aspects of the rhyme pattern a-a-a-a, b-b-b-b that were not fully used. Through an examination of the connection between the six singirs and the reading community, this article also  found that there were two functions of singir; entertaining, and didactic functions that taught various social and religious aspects to the Javanese santri community.

Method: This research uses the RnD method. The development model follows Dick and Carry's opinion with the ADDIE model: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data collection procedures are obtained through, observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests.  The research instrument uses questionnaires. The source of data was obtained from an Arabic teacher, 20 students, and 3 experts. Data analysis techniques use descriptive analysis in percentage form using paired sample t-test formula. Distribution of questionnaires to students and provision of tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. Each test has 20 questions. Researchers conducted a normality test using the Kolmogrof-Simirnov test one sample test. For quantitative data response questionnaires, presentations were processed using Likert scales (4) Very good, (3) Good, (2) Sufficient, and (1) less. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the Arabic learning media based on the Articulate Storyline application was declared very good, and could increase students' interest in learning. This is based on: (1) an Assessment of material experts with a percentage of 97% of criteria and Very feasible and an Assessment of media experts with a percentage of 75% of feasible criteria. (2) Student assessment through response questionnaires, obtained a percentage of 94% so that it is classified as very feasible criteria. (3) Pretest, obtained an average score of 56.80% in the sufficient category, post-test test 85% in the eligible category.  Conclusion and Implication: The conclusion of this study shows that articulate storyline learning media can be accepted by students and teachers as Arabic learning media that can be a solution to the problem of learning listening skills at the Madrasah level. The implication of the research is that application-based media articulate storyline is one of the best tools needed in learning foreign languages and improving language proficiency.
