Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research was to determine the urgency of availability of facilities, time, and parental guidance at home for students' English learning achievement. For that, this research needs to explore the correlation between the things. Therefore, we used a correlational method with 118 English language education program students as participants or subjects for doing research. Students need the motivation from their parents, not only teachers at school. This argument is based on the consideration that children spend more time with their parents at home. Data collection was carried out using documentation and questionnaires. We used SPSS 25 to calculate and answer the hypotheses of each variable. Then used F statistics and multicorrelation to answer the hypotheses of all variables. Based on the results of the study, F change 0.001 <0.05 This means that the hypothesis is accepted and there is a significant relationship between study time learning facilities and parental guidance on student achievement. So that, it can be concluded that each unit increases learning indicators such as; learning facilities, study time and also parental support accompanied by changes in student achievement units in English. Keywords: Learning Facilities; Learning Time; Parental Guidance; Learning Achievement.

Therefore, this study investigates the cases of three active storytellers under the learning community in students' activity at University. The findings suggest that the teacher candidates subjectively position themselves during the learning process of becoming a good storyteller in the Storytelling Community in three ways; (a) they positioned themselves as a storyteller through self-management and self-discipline in advancing their knowledge to be a good Storytelling Performer, (b) they engaged in professional interaction with the audience and other storytellers in community, (c) as the other storytellers inside the community capitalized on their simultaneous storytelling experience as a valuable resource in the storytelling-learning community

Abstract

Considered important for global competitiveness like ASEAN Economic Society, the English proficiency of Indonesian students is unfortunately not satisfactory yet. This condition is, one of which, due to low teachers’ professionalism and students’ motivation for English learning. The motivation of students may become weak because they have not found ways to identify, drive and sustain it. Of the various studies on motivation and challenges in EFL practice in the Indonesian context, research specifically addressing how learners find motivation triggers synergized into project-based learning for sustainable and continuous English learning is still limited. This survey and interview study investigates the motivation of Senior High School (SHS) students in West Java province of Indonesia on English learning and how to drive their motivation through a collaborative project as mandated by the 2013 National Curriculum. Results of questionnaires, interviews and document analysis show that despite having integrative and instrumental motivation to learn English, the participating SHS students show low investment as indicated by low learning enthusiasm in the classroom and poor English performance. This low motivation is also related to some socioeconomic status such as school geographical location, classroom learning situation, and parental supports. The study recommends students’ involvement in a cooperative learning project which can direct and energize their English learning motivation so that they can have increased motivation, good English proficiency and become global citizens with high competitiveness.

Abstract

Reading English text is often regarded as a difficult task by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students during their individual reading time. Therefore, this research investigates the impact of a small group discussion on ESP students’ online text reading performance and strategies. The quantitative research, employing a pre-experimental design, purposively recruited 90 students from the Computer Science and Engineering Faculty. The data were collected through pre- and post-assessments on reading comprehension and a survey on reading strategies. Analyzed using SPSS 27.0, the data of the research show that the small group discussion highly affects reading performance of ESP students. Besides, their reported reading strategy use demonstrates a high frequency of use in all three strategy categories (PROB, GLOB, SUP), with no significant difference found in all categories by age and major. In conclusion, the implementation of a small group discussion in the ESP classroom can effectively improve the online text reading performance and develop reading strategies of the students. It also positively implies that educators can employ a small group discussion to promote other reading aspects in various educational settings.
