Abstract

Abstract

Translation among multiple representations is one of the important abilities to be possessed by prospective mathematics teachers. The mathematics learning curriculum ranging from elementary to college level needs to emphasize the ability to translate mathematical ideas in a form of representation to different mathematical representation structures. Assessing of this ability is important because it can be used as a basis for developing other mathematical literacy skills. The purpose of this study is to describe the level of translation between mathematical representations of prospective mathematics teachers. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted to fourty prospective mathematics teachers in State Islamic University of Mataram. The selection of research subjects was carried out in a purposive sampling. Data were obtained from mathematical translational thinking task in the form of an assignment sheet consisting of 2 questions related to quadratic equations and task-based interviews. Data were analyzed using fixed comparison analysis, which is comparing incidents (phenomena) with the aim of classifying data. The study found five levels of translational ability between mathematical representations, which were named: level 0, level 1, level 2, level 3 and level 4. The characteristics of each level are built based on four mathematical translational thinking processes: unpacking the source of representations, coordinating initial stage, design the target representation and determine the equivalence between the source and target representations. The findings in this study could be used as a guide to develop an instrument to assess mathematical translation ability.

Abstract

This research is based on the variety of students' work in completing mathematical translations, especially from verbal representations to graphs. This study aimed to analyze the path of students' mathematical translation thinking from verbal representations to graphs. Thirty-two students were involved in completing the mathematical translation task, and four students were selected as research subjects. The supporting instruments in this research are in the form of mathematical translation tasks and interview guidelines. The data analysis step begins by grouping the students' work and making a transcript of the interview results. Next, the researcher explored and coded the students' work, found differences in the mathematical translational thinking path, explained the mathematical translation process for each path, reported the findings, interpreted the findings, and validated the research results by triangulating data sources. This study resulted in two types of students' mathematical translational thinking paths, namely the complete and incomplete construction translational thinking path. The difference between these two paths lies in the completeness of cognitive activity in each step of mathematical translation. The results of this study are used as considerations in designing meaningful mathematics learning activities.

Abstract

[English]: This article aims to analyze the strategies and cognitive process of prospective mathematics teachers (PMTs) in constructing graphs of composition function. Forty-four PMTs participated in graph construction tasks (GCT) of composition function. Four of them were purposively selected as the subjects. Data were collected through subjects' works on GCT and interviews based on their works. Data analysis started with organizing subjects' construction of the graph and transcribing the results of the interview. We then explored and coded the subjects' constructed graphs, followed by describing the subjects' strategies and structure of the cognitive process of graph construction and establishing themes, representing and reporting the findings with tables, schemes and narratives, interpreting the findings, and validating the accuracy of the findings by triangulation of the data sources. We found (1) two strategies used by the subjects in constructing graph namely with-translation and without-translation; and (2) the translation process in constructing the graphs begins by unpacking the source representation, preliminary coordination, constructing the target representation and end with determining the equivalence between the source representation and the target representation. The findings indicate that there are transfer variations in conceptual content from micro-concepts of source representation to micro-concepts of target representation. The variations are caused by the differences in the types of mapping carried out at the initial coordination stage. Keywords: Cognitive process, Graph construction, Prospective mathematics teacher, Composition function [Bahasa]: Artikel ini bertujuan menganalisis strategi dan proses kognitif mahasiswa calon guru matematika dalam mengonstruksi grafik fungsi komposisi.

Abstract

Abstract

The main problem in this study is the limited learning resources used by students to understand the material and the difficulties of students in understanding the concepts taught by the teacher. Even though in terms of the number of learning resources used are sufficient, these learning resources cannot fully support students in understanding mathematics material. In addition, in applying the concept, the teacher did not arrange the knowledge of students properly so that students had difficulty understanding mathematical concepts. The purpose of the research in general is to produce Student Worksheets (LKPD) based on the Metaphorical Thinking Approach to Improve the Mathematical Comprehension Ability of Class VIII Students at SMP N 2 Pariangan in understanding mathematical concepts and motivating students to obtain data on what are the characteristics of a student-based LKPD. The resulting metaphorical thinking approach has met the valid criteria. The type of research used is research and development with development according to Van Den Akker which consists of 3 stages, namely: (1) front analysis stage (front-back analysis), (2) prototype stage (prototype) and (3)) the assessment stage (assessment). The data collection technique used to determine validation is the validation sheet. While the instrument used was a product validation sheet. The results showed that the characteristics of the LKPD based on the metaphorical thinking approach that were designed were valid. The results obtained from the LKPD validity test were 79% valid.
