Abstract

The object of the study was to find out whether there was an effect of think-talk-write (ttw) strategy on students’ writing skill in recount text. The research design in this study was quasi-experimental design by using pre-test and post-test. This study was conducted with the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Pelita Bulu Cina as the population of the study . The sample with 60 students as the sample of this study. The writer used X IPA-1 which consist of 30 students as the experimental class and X IPA-2 which consist of 30 students as the control class. The writer used test as the instrument of collecting data. The data collected from this study were analyze using t-test formula. The result of this study that was a positive effect of the result students’ writing skill in recount text after using think-talk-write (ttw) strategy. It can be seen from the data analysis, it was found that value of t-observed (to) was higher than t-table (tt). The result from calculating the data was t-observed (to= 16,48) and t-table (tt= 1.67), it means, to is higher than tt in significant level 5% so the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In order words, using think-talk-write (ttw) strategy had effect on students’ writing skill in recount text of the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Pelita Bulu Cina in academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

Applying an appropriate teaching method plays an important role in the teaching or learning process including teaching listening as a skill. The listening skill is one of the four most important and difficult skill to be taught in English. Students are facing a difficulty either in understanding native speaker or in producing native-like English (accent/pronunciation). They are also unprepared to function in the new word. And then, in most class students are unmotivated and act as passive listeners. This study aimed to find out whether using computer assisted language learning (CALL) method affect listening skill. In this study, using computer assisted language learning (call) method as the independent variable (X) and students’ listening skill as the dependent variable (Y), with the hypothesis: using computer assisted language learning (CALL) method affects on students’ listening skill of seventh year students of SMP NEGERI 3 STABAT  at academic year 2018/2019. The population of this study was seventh year students of SMP NEGERI 3 STABAT at academic year 2018/2019, which consisted of 185 students. The sample was taken by using random sampling technique, the total sample  was 60 students. Then, the sample was divided into two groups, the group taught by using computer assisted language learning (CALL) was as the experimental group and the group taught without computer assisted language learning (CALL) was as the control group. The  writer used test as the instrument of collecting data. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the value of t-observed (to) was higher than the value of t-table, (tobserved = 8,39 > ttable = 1.67). Therefore, the hypothesis proposed by the writer was accepted. In the other words, using computer assisted language learning (CALL) affects listening skill of seventh year students of SMP NEGERI 3 STABAT at academic year 2018/2019.

After doing observation in SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai, the writer found that the students were difficult in developing a descriptive text. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good strategy in order to give a contribution to increase the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text by applying Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) Strategy as a replacement of previous strategy or technique. This research consisted of two variables, they were Praise-Question-Polish Strategy as variable X, and students’ writing descriptive text as variable Y. The type of this research was an experimental research. The writer used a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group which was intended to find out the effect of using Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) Strategy on students’ writing descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai. In  analyzing  the  data,  the  writer  used a statistical  analysis  which  used t-table. It was obtained that t-obtained was higher than t-table. It means, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It could be stared that 6,971 > 1,672. In conclusion, there was a significant effect of using praise-question-polish strategy on students’ writing descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai.
