Abstract

Learning subject-verb agreement (SVA) is still challenging to be mastered by EFL learners especially in University level. Hence, the aim of this study id to describe the student’s ability and to find out the factors in using SVA. The method of this study used qualitative method that displaying analysis descriptively. The participants were 100 Indraprasta PGRI Jakarta University students who took grammar class and learnt about subject-verb agreement. The data was collected by giving test involved short answer choices that consisted of basic SVA, SVA using expression of quantity, SVA using there +be, and SVA using some irregularities, and short multiple-choice questions that related with the factors of learning SVA. The result showed the student’s ability in using SVA in fairly good and the factors came from the student’s motivation in improving their ability such as lack of reading the materials of SVA, lack of understanding on the SVA materials, lack of understanding on their lecturer’s explanation, lack of rereading the SVA materials after getting explanation from their lecturer, lack of doing the exercises, lack of practicing by themselves in SVA exercises, lack of doing self-correction in practicing SVA exercises, lack of doing analysis on the mistakes of SVA exercises, and lack of restudying the mistakes of SVA exercises.

Abstract

AbstrakKegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan di SMPIT 20 Mei Raudlatussa'adah Depok dengan alamat Jl. Menpor No.64, Tugu, Kec. Cimanggis, Kota Depok, Jawa Barat 16451 No. Telp. 8773023 bertujuan untuk membagikan pengetahuan dan informasi mengenai penggunaan platform Zoom, Google Hangouts, dan Google Meet dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis daring di tingkat SMP atau sederajat . Kegiatan yang dilakukan selain memberikan penjelasan secara teoritikal dan praktikal mengenai penggunaan platform-platform tersebut juga memberikan penjelasan tentang bagaimana mengaplikasikannya dengan tehnik yang sesuai dan variasi model pengajaran dengan penggunaan platform Zoom, Google Hangouts, dan Google Meet. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan berupa pelatihan untuk para guru yang mengajar di SMPIT 20 Mei Raudlatussa'adah Depok. Dalam pelatihan tersebut juga dilakukan simulasi atau praktik secara langsung bagaimana penggunaan platform Zoom, Google Hangouts, dan Google Meet yang dapat diimplementasikan ketika mengajar. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan yaitu Community Language Learning yang mana saling berbagi informasi dan berdiskusi serta saling berbagi pengalaman layaknya seperti konsultan dan klien. Kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat ini dilakukan selama bulan Maret-Juli 2020. Hasil dari PKM para guru mendapatkan wacana literasi digital dalam pengajaran secara daring. The activity was not only provided theoretically but also practically explanations regarding the use of those platforms. Additionally, an explanation of how to apply them with appropriate techniques and variations of teaching models were exhibited. Community service activity was carried out in the form of training for teachers who teach at SMPIT 20 May Raudlatussa'adah Depok. In the training, there was also a simulation or first-hand practice on how to use the Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Google Meet platform that can be implemented while teaching. The method used in the training was Community Language Learning which shared information and discussed experiences like consultants and clients. This Community Service activity was held during March-July 2020. The result was the teachers received a digital literacy discourse in online teaching. Abstract

Argumentative writing plays an important role in academic writing at university level. However, learners mostly find that writing this essay a challenging and effortful task. This present study aims at exploring the structures of argumentative essay written by Indonesian EFL students from one university in Jakarta Indonesia. Moreover, it investigates their difficulty and constraints during composing the essay. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the authors selected writing assignment and questionnaire for collecting data. A layout of Toulmin model of arguments was used in analyzing the essays. The findings of the study show that the argumentative papers cover the main elements: claim (thesis statement), data, rebut, and rebuttal data using either in block pattern or point-by-point pattern. The elements show diverse in types. Logical analysis and explanation are the most frequently used on the papers. Though they present acceptable thesis with well-organized essay, some information is unrelated and data for supporting the claim are seemingly insufficient. In addition, the students think that this essay as difficult task. In general, lack of knowledge, vocabulary and practice cause the constraints. In specific level, the students report that giving argument, finding support and working on counterargument become source of difficulty and constraints.

Abstract

Mastering grammar seems very challenging for English foreign language learners. Learning grammar constructions that they do not find or have different system to their first language bring some consequences. One of them is on learning about gerund and to infinitive. The objectives of this study are to describe the ability on mastering gerund and infinitive form and to analyze the factors affecting them to learning its form. This study used descriptive method. The respondents of this research were the students who took English Structure subject on second year of Indraprasta PGRI University Jakarta. Moreover, the data was collected through the instruments, and they were test and questionnaire. The data was analyzed descriptively, and it was tabulated and calculated. Next, it was presented in percent form. After analyzing the data descriptively, the research result is the ability of the students on mastering the using of gerund is on very poor range that is 41.82% (23 out of 55), in other words, it can be said that more than half respondents were still in low understanding of gerund, in the same time, mastering the using to-infinitive form is on very poor range that is 36.36% (20 out of 55), or it can be said that the respondents were still low in understanding of to infinitive. The factors affecting them were being passive, lack of motivation, slow learning, less practice in doing exercises, poor of literature, and not learning from the mistakes. These findings may encourage the lecturer of English Structure to find out more ways to improve student’s ability especially on using gerund and to infinitive for Indonesian EFL Learners in University level.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim of this research study is to investigate the significant difference in English grammar achievement scores of the students taught through cooperative learning and those taught by whole class traditional method. The participants were the students of Indraprasta PGRI University who took Grammar subject on the fifth semester that was split into two groups those are the control group (non-cooperative learning) and experiment group (cooperative learning). The number of the participants in the control group (non-cooperative learning) is 25 participants and the experiment group (cooperative learning) is 25 participants too. The method used is a quantitative experiment method using True Experimental Design specifically on Posttest-Only Control Design and the data is tested by t-test. The result of data analysis shows the differences on average (Mean) the control group (non-cooperative learning) is 63, 52; analyzed case as amount is 25; Standard Deviation is 19.194 ,and average (Mean) the experiment group (cooperative learning) is 79,20; analyzed case as amount is 25; Standard Deviation is 12,111. The T- Test shows that the Sig (2-tailed) is 0,001 <0, 05 means Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In conclusion, there is a significant difference in English grammar achievement scores of the students taught through cooperative language learning.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan di TK Islam Amar Ma’ruf yang berlokasi di Jl. Rambutan No.2 Rt.04/10, Kel. Baru, Kec. Pasar Rebo, Jakarta Timur untuk membagikan pengetahuan dan informasi mengenai penggunaan metode Jolly Phonics dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris di pendidikan usia dini dan taman kanak-kanak. Kegiatan yang dilakukan selain memberikan penjelasan secara teoritikal dan praktikal mengenai metode Jolly Phonics juga di perdetail dengan memberikan penjelasan tentang bagaimana mengaplikasikan metode tersebut dengan tehnik yang sesuai dan variasi model pengajaran dari Jolly Phonics Method . Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan berupa pelatihan untuk para guru yang mengajar di TK Islam Amar Ma’ruf Pasar Rebo, Jakarta Timur. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan yaitu Community Language Learning yang mana saling berbagi informasi layaknya seperti konsultan dan klien. Kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat ini dilakukan selama bulan Maret-Juli 2019. Hasil dari kegiatan abdimas para guru dapat menerapkan metode jolly Phonic pada pengajaran di Taman kanak kanak Al Ma ruf. dan dapat  membuat booklet yang diberikan kepada para guru untuk dapat digunakan dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan metode Jolly Phonics.

Abstract

Development of child language is tremendously complex, remarkable and wondrous. In a second language acquisition context, a child can acquire his second language in either acquiring both languages at the same time or learning the second language after mastering the first one. This present research is concerned to describe the syntactical development particularly for second language writing of an eight-year old child who has experienced immersion abroad for one year in L2-speaking country. The participant is an eight-year old child from Jakarta Indonesia who has experienced immersion environment in Australia for one year. The research will be carried out qualitative naturalistic research design. Not less than 38 documents of participant’s paperwork during her school year were then collected, grouped and analysed. From the findings, it is known that morphological processes on L2 such as affixes and verb changes have emerged. Meanwhile, the findings also show the development on morphemic, phrasal and sentential level on acquiring L2. Some morphemes have been acquired such as the suffix, the changing of verb, the -ing form. Moreover, post-noun prepositional phrases are the most emerged phrases. On sentential level, active declarative sentences are the most frequently appeared. However, some errors and inconsistency also occur indicating the development of her second language.

Abstract

Code-switching (CS) nowadays has been used by youth as a daily language among them and reflected in the “Halustik” movie. The aims of the research are to find out the category of CS spoken by the speakers and to explore their communication intentions to switch from one code to another in the movie which depicts urban life among young people. In the movie, the casts speak and communicate in four languages (Indonesian, English, Javanese, and Sundanese). Qualitative research data were collected by identifying the CS utterances from words, phrases, clauses, and sentences spoken by the main casts/characters in the movie. Next, the data were categorized, selected based on the categories of CS, and classified based on communicative intentions. The findings show that intra-sentential CS (60%) was the most used category of CS, followed by tag CS (4%), and inter-sentential CS (36%). Concerning the communicative intentions by the speakers, they alternate the language into another language since they are intended to talking about a certain topic (60%), quoting someone's words (11%), feeling empathy for something (expressing solidarity) (4%), providing interjection (4%), giving repetition for clarification (7%), clarifying the content of speech to the interlocutor (9%), and expressing a group identity (4%).

Abstract

Penerjemahan merupakan hal yang menantang dan tidak mudah untuk mencapai kesepadan pada hasil terjemahan. Diperlukan strategi yang sesuai dan tepat ketika melakukan penerjemahan. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui beragam strategi penerjemahan yang dapat diterapkan dari teks sumber yang akan diterjemahkan dalam teks target. Metode yang dipergunakan dalam studi ini kualitatif, data yang diambil yaitu 10 artikel mengenai strategi penerjemahan kemudian dikumpulkan dan selanjutnya dikategorikan sesuai kriteria artikel yaitu judul, tujuan, metode, hasil dan pembahasan, dan kesimpulan. Temuan yang diperoleh bervariasi sesuai dengan teks sumber. Implementasi dari studi ini dapat dijadikan sebagi referensi dalam bidang studi pembelajaran penerjemahan.

Abstract

The Community Service was held in SMK Amaliyah that located in Srengseng Sawah Jagakarsa, Jakarta Selatan purposed to conduct teacher training in terms of implementation of autonomy learning (AL) strategy for the student particularly in English language instruction in the online/blended environment. The training was organized both theoretically and practically related to the AL topic. Additionally, the detailed deployment of how to practice in the classroom was applied. The Community service activities were implemented in the form of training for teachers who teach at SMK Amaliyah. The method used in the training of community service activities used Community Language Learning, which is a method in which each other shares information and discusses and shares experiences like consultants and clients. This Community Service activity is carried out in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 Academic Year. In addition, this article also presents the participants' perceptions that involve reaction, learning, behavior, and result.
