Abstract

Anemia is still considered as a serious health problem worldwide that requires large attention. Anemia does not only have an impact on health but also affect student achievement. This study aims to identify the prevalence of anemia among female university students in Surabaya and its relationship to academic achievement. This is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design, involving 92 respondents who were selected using a consecutive sampling method. Data collected by using a questionnaire to obtain respondent characteristics, grade point average (GPA), and menstrual patterns. The measurement of hemoglobin levels carried out using the cyanmethemoglobin method. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia among female students was still quite high and there was a significant relationship between the incidence of anemia and students’ academic achievement measured by grade point average. Female students are one of the groups that are susceptible to anemia, so it is essential to make various efforts to improve Hb levels by increasing the intake of foods high in iron.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of imagery training and concentration on the reaction time of students taking fencing extracurricular activities. It was a quasi-experimental research using quantitative approach. A total of 15 respondents were classified into 3 groups, which were control (K) and two experimental groups. Students in experimental groups were given imagery training (E1) and concentration training (E2) for six weeks and reaction times were measured using Electronic Fencing Target-1 (EFT-1) before and after the exercise was given. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic using paired t-test and Anova one way, and significance level was set at p=0.05. The results found that the imagery and concentration training had a positive impact on the decrease of reaction time, with significance values of 0.008 and 0.005, respectively. From these results it can be concluded that imagery and concentration exercises can help players to improve their reaction time, so that fencers can react quickly to every movement.

Abstract

Health literacy is an important determinant of health outcomes due to its close relation to an individual’s health status and well-being. The purpose of this study is to measure the level of health literacy in university students as well as analyze its relationship with socio-demographic factors and health-related behaviors. A total of 163 university students participated in this study via online-based questionnaires that assessed socio-demographic factors, health-related behavior, physical activity, and health literacy using well-validated instruments. An independent t-test and ANOVA were performed to explore any statistical significance and mean differences in health literacy score. The results discovered no significant differences in demographic characteristics on health literacy scores. However, female respondents, majoring in sport and living in urban areas with parents having higher education degrees, had a slightly higher score than their counterparts. A significant difference in scores was observed in the smoking variable (p = 0.007). Therefore, health literacy in university students is not influenced by demographic characteristics. However, this study showed that higher health literacy scores contribute to better practice of health-related behavior, especially smoking.

Abstract

Adolescent athletes need more nutrient intake than adolescents of the same age due to their high activities, especially during exercise, to avoid disruption in their growth process. The athlete is also required to have a good body composition to achieve optimal performance. This study examined the relationship between body composition and nutrient intake of female adolescent athletes and their fitness level. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 28 female athletes of Tulungagung Training Centre selected using systematic random sampling. Dietary assessment (energy and macronutrient intake) and body composition (FM, FFM) were measured using 2x24 hours food recall and InBody270. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was measured using Multistage Fitness Test. Independent sample t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and Spearman test were performed using SPSS 25. The results found that most athletes had a lower macronutrient intake, especially energy, carbohydrate, and fat which did not meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance. However, endurance athletes consumed more protein (p=0,044) and fat (p=0,873) than non-endurance athletes. Spearman test revealed a negative correlation between energy intake, fat mass, and VO2max. In general, many athletes consume macronutrients less than the RDA. Dietary intake and body composition in highly trained adolescent female athletes must be optimized and monitored to achieve better performance and physical fitness.

Abstract

Knowledge and good nutritional behavior will certainly affect the health of the body. However, students also need to pay attention to healthy lifestyles such as doing physical activity and improving sleep quality to avoid various diseases. The purpose of this study is to describe the knowledge of food nutrition and lifestyle patterns in students of Sports Science, Universitas Negeri Surabaya. It was a descriptive   quantitative research design with a survey method. A total of 30 students were taken using cluster random sampling. The research instrument used a questionnaire sourced from the Global Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and the Adolescents Sedentary Activity Questionnaire (ASAQ). Independent sample t-test was performed to compare the measured variables between male and female students. The results showed that most of the students 53.3%s had a good level of nutritional knowledge and the level of physical activity in the light category was 46.7%. Students are advised to limit their time on sedentary activities to 8 hours per day. Knowledge of food nutrition and healthy lifestyle patterns must be improved even though it is quite good, but it is necessary to improve the intensity of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle in order to have a positive impact on student health.
