Abstract

This paper aims to describe and discuss the messages and meanings of the short story “The Lazy Jack”. The significance of this research is for building new frame that analyzing literary work is only viewed from the setting or character in a simple manner, but also can be viewed from identity theory assisted with critical thinking as the thinking approach rationally and based on the reason. The basis of reasoning is based on the researchers’ capacity in deepening and learning the situations and conflict happening to the character in the story. It is qualitative research in which the data collection is started from coding obtained from the text “The Lazy Jack” in line with the goal of the research. The result of this research shows that Jack does not have a firm personal identity, firm life principle, life vision, and struggling for survival. He is the one dependent on others although he always fails to learn to be better. It means that Jack is without personal and social identity.

Abstract

The importance of developing students' social cohesion attitudes cannot be separated from the heterogeneous conditions of Indonesian society. Cultural diversity, ethnicity, language, race, religion, and customs can cause differences in understanding and perspective on an object so this has the potential to cause divisions between members of the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the social cohesion ability of elementary school students from the aspect of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/award, and participation/goal. This type of research uses a quantitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique used a social cohesion questionnaire with a total sampling of 53 people as research subjects. The data analysis technique used the percentage formula P=f/N x 100%. The condition of students' social cohesion from the aspect of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/award, and participation/goal is in the high category. Therefore, students need to develop themselves through various study group activities, to be able to take valuable lessons for their future. Student study groups will help hone various student abilities, including a sense of belonging, mutual openness, recognition/awards, and participation goal.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the efectiveness of teaching and learning conducted for students to be a young preacher or expert in islamic studies. The research was carried out in Tilatang Kamang district, Agam regency. The study employ qualitative descriptive study with three technic of data colection which cover observation, interview and documentation. The study exhibit that the program was conducted in Masjid Baiturrahmah in 16 meetings which is take place after ashar prayer in 60 minutes. However, the program found to be not efective based several factors. The comitte has not prepare and control the program in discipline. The method in delivering the materials need to be improved to motivate the participants. Only two students were able to meet the criteria based on the program expectation. It is expected that the future training will pay more attention on the condition of young generation in this era and adapt the needed strathegy.
