Abstract

The demand for increased foreign exchange especially in remote areas, can be obtained from tourism objects that are visited by many local and foreign tourists. To attract the foreign tourists in particular, the tourism objects may require street signs, brochures, pamphlets, or information boards written in English to make the foreign tourists visiting the tourism objects understand easily the information related to the tourism objects. Therefore, this community service program was necessarily held in two main objectives: (1) socializing the importance of using brochures and pamphlets written in English in order to attract more foreign tourists; and (2) providing workshop to recognize language features in functional texts which should be used in the brochures or pamphlets. As many as 10 hostel owners around tourism objects in Pamengpeuk followed this community service program. The methods used were lecture and training provided to the participants in the form of workshop. The findings of the community service program showed that there was no brochures or pamphlets written in English found in the hostels around tourism objects in Pamengpeuk. Furthermore, the results of the workshop revealed that 60% of hostel owners were enthusiastic in learning to write brochures in English and encouraged to make one during the workshop. However, the rest of them appeared not interested and believed that without making brochures in English the hostels still gained profits and visitors from local tourists and foreign tourists. Thus, the socialization for the importance of making brochures in English to promote tourism objects and hostel in remote areas needs to be followed up again in the next community service program.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Indonesian language syntactic interference on English Speaking Skills of English Language Students. The research subjects were students of semester 3 at a non-English language college in Garut. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with equivalent and distribution methods. Meanwhile, the corpus was obtained by using the listening technique (SBLC), recording and taking notes from students' conversation assignments about their past activities in the form of videos. The results showed that the syntactic interference in this study includes the inaccuracy of word forms that are influenced by the past, inaccurate subject-verb agreements, inaccuracies, absence of articles, sentence patterns that do not match S + V + O, inaccurate use of the words 'no' and 'not'.Keywords: interference, syntax, speaking skills

Abstract

Pandemi Covid19 telah memberikan dampak yang sangat signifikan terhadap kehidupan manusia secara global. Pandemi ini telah memaksa manusia untuk mencari solusi dan alternative untuk bisa bertahan dalam berbagai bidang. Adaptasi kebiasaan baru (new normal) merupakan sebuah konsep yang diterapkan agar manusia masih bisa menjalankan aktivitasnya tanpa harus mengorbankan keselamatan dan kesehatannya. Salah satu konsep yang diterapkan dalam bidang pendidikan adalah dengan penerapan pembelajaran daring yang diadopsi oleh seluruh jenjang dan jenis pendidikan di seluruh dunia. Pembelajaran daring dianggap memberikan solusi agar proses pembelajaran masih tetap bisa dilakukan ditengah pandemic covid-19. Dilatarbelakangi konsep ini, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui apakah pembelajaran daring ini dianggap sebagai sebuah solusi atau justru masalah baru dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melibatkan berbagai pihak yang terlibat secara langsung dalam proses penerapan pembelajaran daring. Partisipan penelitian ini terdiri atas 60 orang peserta didik, yang merupakan siswa sekolah menengah serta mahasiswa, 20 orang pendidik yang berprofesi sebagai dosen atau guru, serta 20 orang orang tua siswa atau mahasiswa dari berbagai latar belakang sosial yang berbeda. Pemilihan partisipan dilakukan melalui system convenience sampling. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui angket dan wawancara. Setiap kategori partisipan mendapat pertanyaan yang berbeda disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan data yang ingin diperoleh. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa secara umum pembelajaran daring ini masih menghadirkan masalah-masalah yang perlu dibenahi secara prinsip. Fasilitas, sarana pendukung, dan factor lain masih harus diperkuat untuk memperlancara proses pembelajaran daring ini. Pembelajaran daring masih berada pada fase transisi sehingga masih banyak penyesuaian yang harus dibenahi. Perlu adanya langkah bertahap dalam memperbaiki semua aspek agar proses pembelajaran daring ini bisa berfungsi secara maksimal.Kata kunci: Pembelajaran daring, Pandemi, Covid-19.

Abstract

Penelitian ini betujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan subtitle editor terhadap motivasi dan hasil belajar pada mata kuliah terjemahan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di salah satu perguruan tinggi swata terkemuka di Kabupaten Garut-Jawa Barat. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa inggris tingkat tiga semester satu yang terdiri dari empat kelas yaitu kelas A,B,C, dan D. Sampel diambil secara acak sebanyak dua kelas yaitu kelas A sebagai kelas eksperiment dan kelas C sebagai kelas kontrol. Sedangkan dua kelas yang lain dijadikan sebagai kelas untuk melakukan kriteria uji validitas instrument yaitu kelas B dan D.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan pendekatan eksperimen. Model yang digunakan adalah  experimental design dengan metode pretest – post test control group design.Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa bahwa penggunaan subtitle editor dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar mahasiswa dalam translation. Hal ini berdasarkan hasil uji hipotesis yang pertama yaitu  nilai Sig. (2-tailed) > α atau 0,135> 0,05. Kemudian berdasarkn hasil uji pengaruh penggunaan subtitle editor terhadap hasil penerjemahan mahasiswa, disimpulkan bahwa  dengan uji Mann Whitney U diperoleh nilai sebesar 14,500 dengan nilai z sebesar -6,505 serta nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,000. Karena pada pengujian ini nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0,000 lebih kecil dari a = 0,05, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan peningkatan hasil belajar, antara mahasiswa yang menggunakan subtitle editor dengan  mahasiswa yang belajar dengan metode pembelajaran translation secara konvensional. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut terbukti bahwa penggunaan subtitle editor dapat meningkatkan motivasi dan hasil belajar pembelajaran terjemahan. Kata kunci: Subtitle editor , motivasi, hasil belajar dan terjemahan.

Abstract

Abstract To develop professionalism, teachers should have the awareness to create teaching works both in the form of research-based articles and teaching materials. From that point, this community service is intended to build awareness of English teachers in Malangbong District, Garut Regency in producing evidence of work in Merdeka Mengajar according to the Merdeka curriculum which is currently being echoed by the government, especially formulated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. This community service activity was attended by as many as seven English teacher participants in Malangbong District. The method used was in the form of lecture, discussion, and training provided in the form of workshops. This activity resulted in the findings that the workshop participants admitted that they had no work in teaching so far. The questionnaire data also showed that after completing the workshop the participants felt that the Merdeka curriculum appeared more flexible and gave teachers the freedom to work on making teaching materials. After attending the workshop, the participants were aware of applying what they believed was in accordance with the Merdeka curriculum and to create teaching works, as has been illustrated and practiced during the workshop session. Participants also felt that this workshop was educational and fun. Abstrak Untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme, guru hendaknya memiliki kesadaran untuk menghasilkan karya baik dalam bentuk tulisan penelitian maupun bahan ajar. Berangkat dari poin tersebut, pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ditujukan untuk membangun kesadaran guru bahasa Inggris di Kecamatan Malangbong Kabupaten Garut dalam menghasilkan bukti karya Merdeka Mengajar sesuai kurikulum Merdeka yang saat ini tengah digaungkan oleh pemerintah khususnya dikembangkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset dan Teknologi (Kemendikbudristek). Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diikuti oleh sebanyak tujuh peserta guru bahasa Inggris yang ada di Kecamatan Malangbong. Metode yang digunakan adalah berupa ceramah, diskusi dan pelatihan yang diberikan dalam bentuk workshop. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan temuan bahwa para peserta workshop mengakui tidak memiliki karya dalam pengajaran selama ini. Data angket juga menunjukkan bahwa setelah selesai mengikuti workshop para peserta merasa bahwa kurikulum Merdeka terasa lebih fleksibel dan memberikan kebebasan kepada guru untuk berkarya membuat materi ajar. Setelah mengikuti workshop peserta sadar untuk menerapkan apa yang diyakini sesuai dengan kurikulum Merdeka dan menghasilkan karya sebagaimana diilustrasikan dan diperagakan saat pelatihan. Peserta juga merasa kegiatan workshop ini bersifat mengedukasi dan menyenangkan.

Abstract

To support education in Indonesia to be more effective, additional time is needed for student‟s learning in school. Therefore, the policy makers created a full day school system where students study longer in school to get more effective learning and education. How do students perceive this full day school system? The aim of this study was to find out the students‟ perception of the full day school system. To achieve that aim, the qualitative method in the form of the case study was chosen, participated by 8 students in one of a Senior High School in Garut. This study was conducted online. It has been done since the pandemic COVID-19 in Indonesia occurred. With this situation, all school activities were closed. The instrument of this study was semi-structured interview by using recording of mobile phone and WhatssApp aplication. The initial questions are used is five questions. The data analysis was used were: Organize and prepare the data for analyses, read through all the data, begin detailed analysis with a coding process, interrelated themes and drawing conclusion. The results of this study showed that: 1) the students felt bored and tired with this system because too many tasks to do at home and they were too long in school; 2) the students agree with this system, because this system is very helpful in their learning process, besides this system can help the students‟ parents in supervising their children. But they really hope that teachers reduce the tasks that have to be carried and have to be done at home. It was then suggested that the teachers did not add the assignments to do at home and work professionally.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students’ perceptions on the teacher using L1/L2 in teaching EFL Class. It employed a qualitative research which used case study. The participants of this study were three students with categories advance, intermediate, and low. The data were collected by using in-dept interview. The items for the interview were developed from the previous research Elmetwally (2012) which were found appropriate to be used. The findings revealed that the use of Indonesian language in the EFL Class are generally positive. The three participants stated that they prefered when learning with the teachers used of L1/L2 in teaching EFL Classroom e.g explaining the material, explaining difficult vocabulary, translating and presentation. In addition, the students’ perceptions has a different percentage of used L1/L2 in EFL Class. The participants with Advance category stated that she was needed 50% Indonesian explanations when explaining materials, giving examples, explaining formulas and theories. Then, she was needed 50% the full English explanations when the teacher greeting and opening the lessons, checking attendance, giving assignments, correcting students mistakes, closing the lessons, giving homework, and announcing grades. Meanwhile, the intermediate students’ stated that she was needed a full English explanations as much as 45% and needed to be used when explaining the materials, and the rest 55% was needed on the Indonesian explanations to clarify the materials that was explained using English earlier. Furthermore, the low students’ stated that she was needed as much as 80% for Indonesia explanations for explaining the material more deeply so that students become more understand. And the rest 20% was needed for English explanations in opening and closing the teaching activity, and giving an assignment so that the students would get used to it. Moreover, it can be concluded that the use of L1/L2 as a facilitator in their learning, as a tool to help them get a better understanding when learning English.

Abstract

This paper is titled "Effect of Pronunciation Instructions on Student Speaking Skills". The aim is to know clearly the effect on students' pronunciation in English speaking skills. The research design that will be used is qualitative and data collection in case studies, using several types of data collection namely questionnaires and interviews. As a participant, the authors prepared 6 students as participants to participate in the study. These are English students from the Indonesian Institute of Education (IPI). Then the authors observe the effect on English speaking skills and what difficulties students have when learning pronunciation. The factors that cause the teaching of pronunciation are not student skills, namely the lack of practice instructed by the teacher. And the lack of students understanding books recommended by teachers to better understand the instructions given

Abstract

The study aim to obtain insight into teachers’ perspectives on characteristics of a good language learners. To fulfill this aim, qualitative method was employed in this study. The study applied a case study research design. The study was conducted in one of a universities in Garut, West Java. The researcher interviewed three lectures in the English education program. The data were collected from materials, tools for recording, participants as the object of the study, and transcription. The data were then analyzed inductive analysis which concerned with the generation of new theory emerging from the data. The inductive approach is a systematic procedure for analyzing qualitative data where the analysis is guided by specific objectives (Thomas, R David, 2003). The result of this study reveals that teachers do have different perspectives according to what they experience themselves. While the characteristics according to several teachers who have been interviewed researchers are students who are active in the language learning process, students who realize that learning language is not easy, students who find strategies to practice using language in the classroom and outside the classroom, students who have good self- image and self-confidence, students who want to make mistakes.

Abstract

This research entitled "The Effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning method in writing recount text". This aim of this research is to find out the significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning method that used in writing recount text. In this research, the researcher took one Junior High School in Wanaraja academic year 2016/2017. This participant of this research were conducted to 37 students in the 2nd years of Junior High School 1 Wanaraja in 27th July 2016. The researcher used Quantitative method and Pre-experimental design to find out the effect of CTL method. Writing test used in this research were collected Pre-test, Post-test, and treatment. Moreover, this research will use text in the This research also will use pre- experimental research and will focuses on the second grade at one state of Junior high school in Garut . In addition, writing test, pre-test, and post-test will be used to collect the data. Quantitative method will be used to analysethe data to compare the score of both groups in pre-test and post-test.
