Abstract

ABSTRACTThe continuous changes of society have brought some impacts to the name of a place. Even though it is only a name, it actually deals with the cultural perspective of the surrounding communities. Currently, toponym becomes important for society as a part of identity formation processes including for the Sundanese. Beside spoken in West Java and Banten, Sundanese language is also spoken by Central Java communities who live in western areas such as Cilacap, Brebes, and Banyumas regencies. In Cilacap and Brebes regencies, Sundanese language is still an effective language for daily communication. However, in Banyumas regency, this language undergo changes. In fact, the Sundanese language in Banyumas is a quite unique since the archaic words such as pineuh  (sleeping) and teoh (below) are still found. This area still keeps its oral tradition such as the story about the history of the place names. By employing dialectology theory to the data collected from the field, this study of the place name is an effort to strengthen an identity as the place name can be understood as a symbol rooted on the history of the place in its local culture. This tradition contributes toward a sustainability of the place name along with their cultural values.

Abstract

Sundanese is a local language spoken by ethnic Sundanese Indonesian. Like any other language in the world, Sundanese also has language devices called vocatives to call addresses by speakers in a conversation. This paper explains the vocative, including the forms, which are the level of speech to show the social relations between speakers and addresses. The method used to collect the data is an observation method. The data analysis used is a distributional method with a sociolinguistic approach. From twenty-six data, there are sixteen people-name vocatives and ten family-relation vocatives. Of the sixteen people-name vocatives, six vocatives are in full-nickname form, namely Giri (1), Gilang (1), Lia (3), and Ani (1); and ten vocatives are in partial-nickname form, namely Lang (2) Nit (2), Tir (4), and Put (4). Meanwhile, ten family-relation vocatives consist of nine partial Sundanese-honorific forms, namely Kang (6), Neng (2), and Ceu (1), and one complete Sundanese-honorific form, namely Si Aa. Furthermore, from sixteen people-name vocatives, thirteen vocatives are used to show respect to others and three others to show familiar code. Meanwhile, all the family-relation vocatives are used to respect others. Hence, people-name vocatives are used to maintain social relationships on friendships. Meanwhile, family-relation vocatives are used to create new friendships.

The analysis technique utilized is the interactive model of qualitative data analysis by Miles et al. The research findings indicate that teenagers engaged in the Tadjimalela extracurricular activity exhibit a positive attitude towards the Sundanese language. This is evident through their pride in Sundanese culture and language, as well as their commitment to using the Sundanese language despite a limited awareness of linguistic norms among teenagers.
