Abstract

MUI is an organization for Islamic thinkers to unite all Moslems aspirations and also a placefor society to get official religious advice (fatwa) about social-religious problems. But, that aspirations is notfuffilled enough, even more critics appear after MUI made a controversial decision and it was suspected to have political interest. Decision No. 05/W-MUI/II/1992 about legality to remove public Holy Grave (TPU) and also Decision No. 0L/W-MUI/VI/2005 about legality of Alqurans pictured kaver. These decisions have so many responsesfrom Islamic thinkers, academicians, NGO, and society and it have made a long polemic discussion up to now.

Abstract

This article is a part of a study to measure the quality of Muslim’s religious live in Jambi in terms of people’s understanding toward al-Quran and the study of their everyday social practices based on the Muslim holy book. Through a mix of data collection methods which consists of questionnaire, interviews with community leaders and experts as well as discussions with focus groups (FGD), the study found that the ability of Muslims in Jambi to understand the al-Quran and the community’s ability to implement socio-religious roles based on the understanding of al-Quran have been good enough at the level. Factors affecting the community did not reach a better level are due to the lack of ability to translate al-Quran, and understand al-Quran as a substantive source. Another factor why the quality of public understanding on the al-Quran is not maximal is the lack of motivation of the family and social environment to carry out religious activities, to socialize and improve behavior in worship. Abstract

Abstrak: Masalah utama penelitian dalam artikel ini adalah signifikansi pendidikan tinggi dalam melakukan kegiatan pelayanan sosial. Lokus penelitian ini adalah IAIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa kendala ketika melakukan kegiatan pelayanan sosial adalah konseptual dan metodologi ketika melaksanakan program pengabdian masyarakat di lapangan. Secara konseptual, pelayanan sosial program hanya diterjemahkan ke dalam mahasiswa kerja lapangan sosial, sedangkan metodologi kerja lapangan tidak membawa kreativitas baru atau inovasi. Masyarakat menuntut perguruan tinggi Islam untuk memberikan pelayanan sosial dengan tindakan lebih nyata seperti bimbingan bagi guru agama, bimbingan dalam pengelolaan dan pelaksanaan zakat dan manajemen masjid, serta bantuan teknis dalam melaksanakan kegiatan sosial-ekonomi. Kata kunci: Pengabdian Masyarakat, IAIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin, Pelayanan sosial.Abstract: The main issue to be explored in this article is how unsignificant a higher education in performing social services activities. The locus of this study is IAIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Barriers that occur when conducting social services activities including conceptual and methodological obstacles when implementing community service programs in the field. Conceptually, social services programs simply translated into college students social field work, while the methodology of field work does not bring any new creativity or innovation. Communities demand that the Islamic university to give social services with concrete actions such as guidance for religious teachers, guidance in the management and implementation of zakat and management of mosque, as well as technical assistance in carrying out socio-economic activities.
