Abstract

In learning English, the first thing that must be learned is vocabulary. This means that learning vocabulary is very important, especially for students in high school. Based on the researcher observations at the tenth grade, the technique used in learning is monotonous which makes students tend to get bored so that student participation in class is lacking. The vocabulary problem must be solved, because it can make it difficult for students to continue to the next level or class. Also students may have low motivation in learning English because they feel English is difficult. The objectives of the researcher is to improve students vocabulary mastery by using Fly Swatter Game. Based on the identification of the problems above, the researcher wants to overcome the problems of the students in English vocabulary mastery. In this research, the researcher use Classroom Action Research as a research design that was held in two cycles. The subject of the research was the students of X-IPS 1 which consist of 23 students. In this research, the instrument are evaluation sheet and observation sheet. From the result of each cycle, it shown that; in Cycle I, there was not students’ value which could be classified in “good level”, there were 3 students’ value (13,04%) in “good level”, there were 3 students’(13,04%) in “enough level”, there were 7 students’ value (30,43%)in “less level”, there was 10 students’ value (43,47%) in “fail level”. The average of the students’ value was 46,3. It showed that Cycle I was not successful, so this research has continued to the next cycle after revising the plan based on the weaknesses in cycle I. The result of Cycle II research showed that there was not students’ (0%) values classified in the “enough“, “less” and “fail level.” There were 8 students’ values (34,77%) in the “good level”, and 15 students’ values (65,21%) in the “very good level”. The average value of the students’ was 86,5. Based on the result above the researcher concludes that Fly Swatter Game could be done in teaching vocabulary and could improve the students’ ability in mastering vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims to improve students' abilities in reading comprehension by using the Reading and Feedback strategy. Researcher use Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this study were class VIII-A students of SMP Negeri 3 Sogae'adu for the 2022/2023 academic year, which consisted of 19 students. The researcher has conducted in two cycles. Each cycles consists of two meeting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation sheet, test and field notes sheet. The result of the data in Cycle I, there were 7 students (37%) categorized in the fail level, 2 students ( 10 %) categorized into the less level, 3 students (16%) categorized into the adequate level, 7 students ( 37%) categorized into the good level. The average of the students’ value was 53.69%. This result showed that the students were unsuccessful. While in Cycle II, there were no students categorized into the fail, less and adequate level, 7 students (37%) categorized into the good level, and 12 students (63%) categorized into the very good level. The average of the students’ value was 83.68%. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the Students' Reading and Feedback (SRF) strategy was successful in improving students' reading comprehension ability in understanding recount text.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills that must be learnt by the students. However, the students had several problems in learning speaking which caused the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) were not able to achieve by the students. They were lack of vocabulary, the lack of students in think in short time when want to say, and the students were not able to identify the generic structure of song lyric. Therefore, the aim of research was to improve the students’ speaking skill in use Tik Tok App at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Gido in 2022/2023. The subject of the research was the tenth grade consisted of 19 students. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) and it was applied in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of several procedures they were planning, action, observation, and reflection. The researcher used observation sheet, field notes, and test as the instruments of research. The result of Cycle I showed that most of the students were not able to achieve the MCC where no student There were 10 students (52,63%) who got mark classified in “Good” level. There were 9 students (47,36%) who got mark classified in “Adequate” level. And there were 0 students (0%) who got mark classified in “Less” level. The average of students’ writing skill in Cycle I was 52,63. While in Cycle II, it showed that all of students have been achieved the MCC where 13 students in “Excellent” level (72.22%), 5 students in “Good” level (27.78%), and there was no student in “Fair” level and “Poor” level. The average of students’ speaking skill in Cycle II was 84,21% Based on the result above, it proved that Tik Tok App increased the students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Gido in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research is motivated by a preliminary study at SMK Negeri 1 Lahewa and the results obtained that students are still lacking in writing recount texts. In addition, the use of learning media by teachers in teaching is still conventional, especially in recount text material. The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility, practicality, effectiveness, of dialog journal writing of recount text. This research is research and development. The results of the study, the developed Dialogue Journal Writing (DJW) of Recount Text has been tested for validity by linguists with an average percentage of 83% and by media experts 91.25% with very valid criteria, to practical to be used by students with an average percentage score of 90.29% in individual trials, 84.72% in small group trials, for field practicality trials of 85.69% to effective to use with an average percentage value of 86% with very effective criteria.

Abstract

The objective of the research is find out the dominant and why do the dominant applied teacher and students in classroom interaction at the Eighth Grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Mandrehe in 2022/2023. The subjects were class VIII B with 21 students and 1 English teacher. The research findings was concluded that the teacher-students of VIII-B of UPTD SMP Negeri 4 Mandrehe in English classroom interaction through IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) was the dominan applied in classrom interaction in initiation is convergent question there were 32 (51%). In response, it found that the dominant applied in classroom interaction in response is similar students’ response there were 41 (64%), The last is Feedback it found that the dominant applied in classroom interaction in feedback is acknowledging a correct there were 24 (62%) the teacher praises the student for a correct answer. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends that teachers should be use a variety of question, this helps to encourage students’ critical thinking and creativity. Then, teachers should give feedback to students who answer questions to show that the teacher values their participation in class interaction.

Abstract

Reading is one process of getting information from the writer to the reader. In the reading context the basic purpose is the reader can understand the text. In this research, researchers found some problem there are the students do not understand which is the main idea and the students can’t conclude the content of the text. Related to these problems, the purpose of this research is to describe the teachers’ strategy to teach reading comprehension in classroom. To make it clear the researcher use qualitative research especially descriptive research is to describe a phenomenom and its characteristics. The more importantly the result of this research is the teacher at SMP Negeri 1 Lahewa Timur use Small Group discussion and Listen, Read and Discuss. As recommendation the strategy in teaching reading comprehension is better to used Small group discussion and Listen read and discuss in other school . Furthermore, the researcher expects the next researchers to conduct the same research to find out more the teachers’ strategy to teach reading comprehension in the future by making this research as the reference in the same field

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most skills that people should dominate to create communication between humans. To improve the students’ speaking skill by using of Mingle Game of the eleventh grade SMK Negeri 1 gunungsitoli which the total numbers of the students was 30 persons. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. This research was applied into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation sheet, evaluation sheet and field note. From the result of each Cycle, the researcher finds that the students get an improve the students’ speaking skill by using of Mingle Game. In the second meeting of cycle II, the researcher obtained the improvement of students, who achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (70). There were 1 (7%) student who got score among 75-100 classified as “Very Good Criteria”, 29 (93%) students got score among 75-84 classified as “Good Criteria”. In Cycle II the highest mark was 95 and the lowest was 65. Based on the result above the researcher concludes that The Use of Mingle Game could be done Improve the Students’ Speaking skill.

Abstract

There were some problems that students faced when speaking, such as: difficult in conveying their ideas, lack of vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and the strategy that used by the teacher that monotonous and boring. The purpose of this research was to improve the students' speaking skills through Talking Stick Strategy at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023. The researcher conducted this research by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). Instrument of the research were observation sheets, field notes and oral test. In Cycle I, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 79% (good), and the percentage of the students' completed activities was 72.5% (adequate). In this cycle, the students could not achieve the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, students' average score was 51 (less). All the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 63 and the lowest score was 38. Furthermore, in Cycle II, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 95% (very good), and the students' completed activities was 91% (very good). In this cycle, the students had achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, the students' average score was 79 (good). None of the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 81 and the lowest score was 75. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concluded that Talking Stick Strategy could improve the students' speaking skill in the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate whether is there a significant effect of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on Students’ ability in Speaking Skill or not. The research was conducted by using Quantitative Research especially  in Quasi-Experimental Design. The Population of the research was eighth grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli that consisted of 287 students. The research  took sample which consist of 64 students by using Cluster Sampling Technique. The instrument used in collecting data was Directed Response Task. The instrument of  my research is sound record, handphone, and documentation.  The test was validated by three validators and it was stated valid. Then the researcher gave the pre-test and post-test to experimental class and control class to find the normality and homogeneity of the  sample. After conducting the research, the researcher analyzed the data and the result shows (1) the mean score of students’ ability  in pre-test of experimental class was 66,41 and control class was 61.10.  (2) The mean score of students’ ability in post-test of experimental class 87,22 and in control class was 70.00. (3) The result of testing hypothesis , the researcher found that tcount was 12.127 and ttable was 1.659. Since  tcount(12.127) ttable(1.659), it can be concluded that Ha is accepted. (4) There is a significant effect of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on students’ ability in speaking skill especially in expressing asking and giving opinion at the eighth grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.Furthermore, the researcher has some suggestion related to the research: (1) The English Teacher should use Point-Counterp oint Strategy in teaching Speaking especially in expressing asking and giving opinion material. (2) The English Teacher should be able to guide the students in practicing speaking orally by using expression, dialog, and enhancing the students’ vocabulary. The researcher suggest for the next researcher to use Point-Counterpoint Strategy in the other skill of language.

Abstract

Bentuk interaksi antara guru dan siswa tergolong interaksi kelompok dengan individu, interaksi ini digambarkan oleh siswa sebagai kelompok dengan individu, artinya seorang guru melakukan kegiatan meminta dan memberi pendapat sehingga memungkinkan interaksi berjalan dengan baik di lingkungan sekolah dan proses kegiatan belajar, yang akan menimbulkan respon dari siswa. Respon adalah umpan balik yang diterima siswa atas pembelajaran yang telah mereka pelajari. Masalah dalam penelitian ini yaitu sulitnya respon siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis deskriptif kualitatif, teknik yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah observasi dan wawancara dan dari hasil wawancara tersebut peneliti menganalisis data dengan cara reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui respon siswa dan untuk menjelaskan faktor penyebab kesulitan respon siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam meminta dan memberikan pendapat di kelas delapan UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli. Jumlah subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah 32 siswa dari kelas VIII-D. Berdasarkan hasil, dimana beberapa siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami, menerjemahkan, mengemukakan pendapat atau ide dalam bahasa Inggris. Faktor penyebab respon siswa sulit adalah penggunaan metode yang monoton atau ceramah yang mengakibatkan siswa kurang aktif, kurangnya kosa kata sehingga siswa kesulitan menyusun kalimat dan mengungkapkannya dalam bahasa Inggris, kurang percaya diri. Akhirnya berdasarkan hasil tersebut, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa respon siswa terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli rendah sehingga harus ditingkatkan lagi terutama dalam menanggapi pertanyaan atau memberikan pendapat dari guru dimana siswa harus menjawab dengan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris.
