Abstract

Comparing the quality of basic reservoir rock properties is a common practice  to  locate  new  infill  or  development  wells  for  optimizing  oil  field development using reservoir simulation. The conventional technique employs a manual  trial-and-error  process  to  find  new  well  locations,  which  proves  to  be time-consuming, especially for large fields. Concerning this practical matter, an alternative in the form of a robust technique is introduced in order to reduce time and  effort  in  finding  new  well  locations  capable  of  producing  the  highest  oil recovery. The objective of this research was to apply a genetic algorithm (GA) for determining well locations using reservoir simulation, in order to avoid the conventional  manual  trial-and-error  method.  This  GA  involved  the  basic  rock properties,  i.e.  porosity,  permeability,  and  oil  saturation,  of  each  grid  block obtained from a reservoir simulation model, to which a newly generated fitness function was applied, formulated by translating common engineering  practice in reservoir  simulation  into  a  mathematical  equation  and  then  into  a  computer program. The maximum fitness value indicates the best grid location for a new well. In order to validate the proposed GA method and evaluate the performance of the program, two fields with different production profile characteristics were used, fields X and Y. The proposed method proved to be a robust and accurate method to find the best new well locations for oil field development. The key to the success of the proposed  GA method lies in the formulation of the objective functions.

Abstract

Trending topics in Twitter is a collection of certain topics that are widely discussed by users. This study aims to design a model and strategy for finding trending topics from data streams on Twitter. The research approach was carried out in four stages, namely twitter data collection, preprocessing data, data analysis with sequential K-Means clustering and information processing. Sequential K-Means is used because it can receive input data sequentially and the cluster center can be updated. Testing of the model is carried out in three scenarios where each scenario is distinguished between the amount of data, time and parameter values. After that, evaluation of the results of clustering will be done using the Dunn Index method. Trending topics twitter application were created using the R language and produce output in the form of histograms. There are five topics being the trending topics in New York before the new year. The topic of "Times" relates to the presence of a new year's celebration night concert in Times Square. The "Hours" topic deals with the calculation of time and seconds towards 2017. "Eve" and "Party" topics relate to celebrations and the topic "Resolution" relating to hope and change for New Yorkers in in 2017.

Abstract

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of learning evaluation forms that requires excellent quality of questions. Preparing TOEFL questions using a conventional way certainly spends a lot of time. Computer technology can be used to solve the problem. Therefore, this research was conducted in order to solve the problem of making TOEFL questions with sentence completion type. The built system consists of several stages: (1) input data collection from foreign media news sites with excellent English grammar quality; (2) preprocessing with Natural Language Processing (NLP); (3) Part of Speech (POS) tagging; (4) question feature extraction; (5) separation and selection of news sentences; (6) determination and value collection of seven features; (7) conversion of categorical data value; (8) target classification of blank position word with K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN); (9) heuristic determination of rules from human experts; and (10) options selection or distraction based on heuristic rules. After conducting the experiment on 10 news, it is obtained that 20 questions based on the results of the evaluation showed that the generated questions had a very good quality with percentage of 81.93% (after the assessment by the human expert), and 70% was the same blank position from the historical data of TOEFL questions. So, it can be concluded that the generated question has the following characteristics: the quality of the result follows the data training from the historical TOEFL questions, and the quality of the distraction is very good because it is derived from the heuristics of human experts.

Abstract

Online reviews are crucial for business growth and customer satisfaction. There is no exception for the airlines’ company, which places third as the biggest contributor to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product. Customer opinions play an important role in maintaining the reputation and improving the quality of service of the airlines. However, there is no specific platform for online review. Most online ratings obtain English, leading to inaccurate results as not all reviews regarding different languages are considered. Airlines currently have no specific platform for online reviews despite being critical for business growth, performance, and customer experience improvement. Hence, this paper proposed implementing a web-based dashboard to visualize the best Malaysian airline companies. The airline companies involved are AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Malindo Air. We designed and developed the proposed study through the bilingual analysis of Twitter sentiment using the Naïve Bayes algorithm. Naïve Bayes algorithm is a machine learning approach to do classification. The tweets extracted were analyzed as metrics that advance airline companies’ online presence. Testing phases have shown that the classifier successfully classified tweets’ sentiment with 93% accuracy for English and 91% for Bahasa. Every feature in the web-based dashboard functions correctly and visualizes a detailed analysis of sentiment. We applied the System Usability Scale to test the study’s usability and managed to get a score of 94.7%. The acceptability score ‘acceptable’ result concluded that the study reflects a good solution and can assist anyone in understanding the public views on airline companies in Malaysia.

Abstract

Motif discovery in DNA sequences is one of the most important issues in bioinformatics. Thus, algorithms for dealing with the problem accurately and quickly have always been the goal of research in bioinformatics. Therefore, this study is intended to modify the random projection algorithm to be implemented on R high performance computing (i.e., the R package pbdMPI). Some steps are needed to achieve this objective, ie preprocessing data, splitting data according to number of batches, modifying and implementing random projection in the pbdMPI package, and then aggregating the results. To validate the proposed approach, some experiments have been conducted. Several benchmarking data were used in this study by sensitivity analysis on number of cores and batches. Experimental results show that computational cost can be reduced, which is that the computation cost of 6 cores is faster around 34 times compared with the standalone mode. Thus, the proposed approach can be used for motif discovery effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

Mastery techniques in badminton game are a main ability that must be possessed by players. One part of these techniques is the strategy in proper shuttlecock placement, so that the opposing player is difficult to restore it. Therefore, this study aims to build a computational model and its implementation that are able to provide predictions/recommendations for trainers and players on determining strategies of shuttlecock’s placements and strokes. The proposed model takes into account historical game patterns that have been done by world class athletes. Then, string matching using the Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm and a clustering method are utilized to provide solutions to be some strategies on shooting the shuttlecock. The model is then implemented in the R programming language. Several experiments, involving 20 series of world matches collected as historical data, have been conducted to validate the system. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the system can be used as an alternative tool for players and coaches to determine the strategy in the placement and strokes of shuttlecock on badminton game.
