Abstract

The fundamental issue is the growing use of scientific information possessed by students to solve problems in daily life and produce useful scientific source from scientific literacy. The purpose of the research was to analyze and describe the ability of a student science concepts from the aspect of scientific literacy that includes aspects of scientific knowledge, scientific competence, scientific context as well as the factors that influence the students’ science literacy skills. This research was quantitative descriptive analysis. The instrument used was a matter of objective 40 along with the reasons of the physics concept and biology concepts that are used to measure aspects of scientific knowledge, scientific competence, and scientific context, while the students’ attitudes towards science and science teaching and learning strategies measured by questionnaire instrument. Instruments used included multiple-choice test questions reasoned and questionnaires (the attitude of science and science teaching and learning strategies). Based on data analysis it was known that the ability of science literacy PGSD UMK students varied, 66.2% of students were at the level of nominal and 33.8% of the students were at the functional level. It showed that 66.2% of students already had a concept for connecting science with other disciplines, could write a scientific term, but students still had misconceptions, while 33.8% of students considered the theory and explained concepts correctly, but they had a limited understanding and were difficult to connect to the concept of his own opinion.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the mastery of knowledge, attitudes, and skills of students in disaster mitigation in prone areas of volcanic eruptions. The subjects of this research were fifth (V) graders in three elementary schools situated in prone areas of Merapi volcano eruption in Srumbung subdistrict, Magelang regency, Central Java. The data collected in this study consisted of disaster knowledge, attitude, and mitigation practice. The data of disaster knowledge were obtained through a test and analyzed using t-test and N-gain. The attitude data were collected using questionnaire with an improvement analysis using N-gain. The mitigation practice data were collected through observation and analyzed by descriptive percentage for attitudes and skills. The research results showed that the implementation of thematic learning of Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS) integrated with local wisdom was able to reconstruct and increase the disaster management knowledge. This can be seen from the N-gain score obtained by each elementary school which the highest Gain Score was 0.46 and included in the medium category. There was an enhancement attitude toward disaster having the highest Gain Score was 0.77. All disaster mitigation indicators were successfully mastered by more than 70 percent of the students, who were in the good category (70≥X≤85) in all three elementary schools implementing the thematic learning of SETS integrated with local wisdom.

Abstract

The low condition of students’ Generic Science Skills (GSS) becoming a concern since GSS is an essential provision for millennial living in the era of the industrial revolution 4.0. The study aimed to measure the impact of guided inquiry learning on generic science skills by using the digital swing model. This research used the experimental method which involved 360 students of 12th grade from senior high school. The primary data of students’ GSS were obtained from observations during activities and reports of practicum activities, then the resulting data were analyzed by t-test. The average of students’ GSS in the experimental class was 3.32, which is included in the very good category. Meanwhile in the control class was 3.17, which is included in the good category. Based on the results of the t-test analysis, the score was 0.044, which means that there were differences between the experimental class and the control class. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of digital swing has a positive impact on students’ GGS. The use of digital swing could stimulate the students to do the practicum activities which leads to the improvement of student’s GGS. However, this study is only focusing on the smaller angle; therefore, it is crucial for further research to set up the digital swing with the angle >15° to identify the effect on it.

Abstract

Learning design abilities and TPACK are very much needed by prospective science teachers to prepare science learning in the 21st century. The specific objectives of this research were to analyze the improvement of the learning design ability and TPACK possessed by pre-service science teachers after taking lectures with the Project-Based Scaffolding TPACK (PBST) model and analyze the correlation between TPACK and learning design abilities. The research used was quantitative research with non-equivalent control group design. The samples selected were 4 classes of pre-service science teachers who were taking Science Learning Strategy and Design courses. The instrument used in this study consisted of a lesson plan assessment sheet and a TPACK evaluation test. Data analysis used was independent t test, N-Gain test, and bivariate correlation test using SPSS. The results showed that the experimental class obtained an increase in the high category on learning design ability and the medium category on TPACK. After being given PBST model treatment in the experimental class, there is a significant difference in the learning design ability and TPACK between the experimental and control classes. In addition, the results also show that there is a correlation between TPACK and learning design ability. The PBST model is expected to be a solution offer to prepare pre-service science teachers at higher education in line with the demands of 21st century learning based on technology integration.
