Assessing English Learners in Various Ways Arny Irhani Asmin

This study aimed to know the implementation of a new test design given by the lecturer in English for Media class and to find out the perceived impacts by the students related to the tests given. A new way mentioned here is a lecturer gives freedom to the students to choose their own material to be presented or practice in the final test. The writer found that, this new way is success in reducing the students’ tensions in facing the final test; it could be seen from the process and the results of the test that are quite good. Moreover, in the process of the test, all students are excited in selecting and preparing materials to be presented in the test. Moreover, based on the results of direct observation and interviews to the students, the writer concluded that the implementation of this test creates a good atmosphere; fun and the tension level of students are also lighter. This brings a positive impact on the students, where the results obtained by the students in this test were also better than the previous test. In other words, by providing many options to the students in the test is better than only giving one choice to do.

Contextual Meanings of the English Terms Used in Hotel Arny Irhani Asmin

This paper presents the contextual meanings of the English terms used by the staff in Claro Hotel Makassar. The researcher observed three departments in a hotel; they are Housekeeping, Front Office and Food & Beverage department. The result of the research shows that there are many types of the English terms used in hospitality; some of the terms are categorized as the English special terms due to its contextual meaning. Furthermore, the researcher found that almost all staffs understand the terms even though they do not speak English fluently. However, for the new employer and trainee, most of them are somewhat distressed and said they did not know the terms because their educational background is not hospitality and the trainee said that some of the terms are not in their school textbook. Thus, it is essential for the English for Specific Purposes practitioners and particularly for the teachers of English for Hotel to understand and teach the contextual meanings of the particular English terms used in the hotel industry.

Register in Sociolinguistics is a form of language used for a special situation in a particular social setting, it also known as variety of language. In hotel industry, there are many kinds of English terms used by the staff both written and spoken. This study was designed to find out the English terms, the lexical meaning and the contextual meaning of the English special terms used by the staff of Front Office department in the Grand Clarion Hotel Makassar. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study is the staff of Front Office department. The data were obtained through participant observation, semi-structured interview and review of the documents. The result of the study showed that the majority of terms used in Front Office department were in English. The researcher found that there were many kinds of the English terms used by the Front Office department in the Grand Clarion Hotel Makassar. In Front Office department, 85 (eighty five) English terms were found and 36 (thirty six) of them classified as the English special terms. English special terms have different meanings both lexical and contextual. These English terms in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is called register.

Kegiatan pengabdian ini diadakan dengan maksud dan tujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan Bahasa Inggris pelayaran para taruna SMK Pelayaran Samudera Nusantara Utama Palopo dan meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa para taruna terkait dengan Bahasa Inggris untuk pelayaran. Dengan adanya kegiatan ini diharapkan para taruna mampu menguasai Bahasa Inggris dikarenakan dunia kerja sebagai pelaut menuntut mereka harus mengetahui dan dapat menggunakan Bahasa Inggris secara aktif. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan selama 6 minggu, yang bertempat di SMK Pelayaran Samudera Nusantara Palopo. Hasil dari kegiatan ini seluruh peserta merasa sangat senang dan semakin termotivasi untuk belajar dan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris secara lebih aktif. Tour Guides' Intercultural Communication Strategies In Toraja Arny Irhani Asmin

This study presents Torajanese tour guides’ strategies in intercultural communication based on four dimensions, they are knowledge, communication skills, traits and interpersonal relationship. The result of this study revealed that tour guides in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi handled conflicts or conflicts that may be encountered in intercultural communication according to the competencies they have learned and experience in the field. The majority of respondents said that English proficiency, friendliness and broad understanding of tourist attractions are important points in their work. Thus, by understanding this, communication problems that may occur can always be resolved properly.

Dua tahun terakhir kita dihadapkan pada era new normal, dimana seluruh aktifitas termasuk di dunia Pendidikan harus di lakukan dari rumah. Dengan pemanfaatan internet, pembelajaran dari rumah ini berjalan dengan baik, namun beberapa wilayah di Indonesia tidak memiliki jaringan internet kuat serta sarana yang mendukung untuk belajar daring. Homeschooling adalah strategi yang tim pengabdi pilih untuk menunjukkan dukungan kepada anak-anak yang berada dalam situasi keterbatasan ini. Bekerjasama dengan mahasiswa KKN Universitas Cokroaminoto Palopo, kami membentuk tim Homeschooling yang mengajarkan mata pelajaran kepada siswa Sekolah Dasar di Kecamatan Malangke. Metode pelaksanaan adalah dengan membentuk posko khusus homeschooling di lokasi sekitar, lalu mengundang beberapa anak dalam satu group agar kegiatan tetap sesuai standar protokol kesehatan. Kegiatan ini mendapatkan respon positif dari siswa dan orang tua, terutama karena membantu kesulitan mereka dalam mendampingi anak dalam belajar. Anak-anak antusia dan senang dapat kembali merasakan belajar bersama beberapa teman. Kegiatan serupa sangat baik untuk membantu siswa dalam belajar dan secara psikologis meredakan kebosanan mereka belajar dari rumah.

Kegiatan ini mengambil tema Pegenalan Bahasa Inggris melalui Lagu untuk Siswa SDN 49 Mappatongko Palopo. PkM ini dilaksanakan oleh tim dosen Universitas Cokroaminoto Palopo bekerjasama dengan mahasiswa Kampus Mengajar 3 tahun 2022. Target sasaran adalah siswa SD kelas 1, 2 dan 3 SD Negeri 49 Mappatongko Palopo. Kegiatan berlangsung dengan baik dan mendapatkan sambutan dan antusisme dari guru dan siswa di sekolah. Tim pelaksana juga menyarankan agar guru utamanya di sekolah dasar dapat menggunakan lagu disela materi yang diajarkan dengan memperhatikan beberapa hal yang telah disampaikan sebelumnya, seperti jenis lagu, waktu dan kondisi sekitar. Semoga kegiatan ini dapat menjadi motivasi bagi siswa untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris dan guru untuk mengajar menggunakan media lagu.

Mini Library untuk Anak Kurang Mampu di Kecamatan Wara Kota Palopo Arny Irhani Asmin; Patmaniar Patmaniar

Kegiatan ini secara khusus bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat membaca anak-anak di kota Palopo dengan pengadaan Mini Library, dan secara umum untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir, membaca dan menulis atau keterampilan lain yang dibutuhkan (softskill dan hardskill) dengan membentuk suatu komunitas belajar Learning Station Community. Program ini dilakukan dalam beberapa tahap, yakni tahap sosialisasi kegiatan kepada mitra, membentuk komunitas belajar dengan nama Learning Station Community dan menyediakan buku bacaan anak yang beragam di Mini Library . Selain membaca, anak-anak juga diajari berbagai hal seperti seni, bahasa Inggris dan nilai-nilai karakter dan budaya bangsa Indonesia. Kegiatan ini bermitra dengan dua kelompok anak-anak di Kelurahan Surutanga Palopo, mereka dengan antusias mengikuti kegiatan belajar dan membaca di Mini Library, namun memotivasi anak-anak untuk terus aktif belajar dan membaca merupakan hal yang menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi tim pelaksana. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan ini direncanakan akan terus berlanjut dengan harapan bahwa kecintaan anak-anak di kota Palopo pada buku dan kegiatan membaca akan terus meningkat.
