Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine to what extent of brainstorming technique in assisting the writing activities of third semester students in English Education Study Program. The researcher used a mixed-method research approach.  In this study, the researcher used research instruments; questionnaires and interviews.  The participants in this study were eighteen students and an English Lecturer of English Education Study Program at IAIN Manado. The data were analyzed trough involving data reduction, data display and conclusions. Based on results found by the researcher, 92.77% of students responded positively to the use of brainstorming technique in writing activities. It is confirmed by the results of interviews that students feel helpful and valuable when using brainstorming technique in writing activities, such as collecting ideas to be directed and structured. On the other hand, 7.23% of students responded negatively to this technique. Moreover, from the result of interviews students also said that writing activities using brainstorming technique were practical and helpful in collecting ideas and thoughts in writing a text. It can be proven by looking at the positive responses, which include interesting, fun, motivated, enjoyable, effective and creative.Keywords: brainstorming, technique, writing activities

Abstract

This study aims to determine the proportion (frequency and percentage) of errors and dominant errors in the composition of adjectives. This study focused on the analysis of misordering errors based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay in the use of adjective order. The research methodology in this study was a quantitative descriptive method. The respondents of this study were 20 second semester students of the English Education Study Program at the Manado State Institute of Islamic Studies with the academic year 2021/2022. The researcher used a test as an instrument to collect data. The following test was in the form of; Rearrange Words and Multiple Choices. In the meantime, the data analysis procedure applied in this study was collecting a sample, identifying error based on the sequence of adjectives by Frank theory, describing the results, and evaluating the errors. The research findings show that students at second semester of English Education Study Program have errors to identify the appropriate order of adjectives in the sentence. In addition, researcher found that there were 520 frequencies of misordering errors with an error percentage of 50.0%. Rearrange words test have 272 frequency of errors (52.3%) and Multiple Choices test have 248 frequency of error (47.7%). In short, the dominant error based on the test is Rearrange words, with a total misordering error which is 272 errors and its’ percentage 52.3%. The most dominant errors in adjective order item is Shape with a total frequency of 52 out of 80 total errors with 13% error percentage. The research implications is students can be aware in using more adjectives with correct ordering especially when use adjective shape.

Abstract

Intercultural communication competence is now required in such higher education institutions. The issue can be seen by having misconceptions, misunderstandings, and a need for knowledge to understand other cultural exchanges like English and Indonesia. It happened in IAIN Manado, where the researcher takes place as the case of the study and as the research location. Respondents in this study were 28 students of the Manado IAIN English Education Study Program. The data collection technique used in this study was purposive sampling and analyzed through descriptive qualitative analysis. It is analyzed by reducing data, selecting relevant data, organizing data into regular patterns, and drawing conclusions. The study results show that learning English that integrates intercultural communicative competence positively benefits students, with an average percentage of 73.95. An effective strategy for combining intercultural communication competencies is openness to experience and knowledge of other cultures. However, in combining intercultural communication competencies, students also face challenges. These challenges include adapting to foreign cultural communication styles, expressing opinions in the context of intercultural communication in English, understanding conversational etiquette in foreign cultures, and socializing with new cultural environments while learning English. Then, with the right approach and sufficient hands-on experience, students can overcome these challenges and develop solid intercultural communication skills.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa yang di akui PBB menjadi bahasa Internasional untuk komunikasi secara global. Sebagai lembaga pendidikan yang mempunyai ciri khas Islam, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah mempunyai peran penting untuk pembentukan kepribadian anak didik. Karena melalui pendidikan madrasah ini para orang tua berharap agar anak-anaknya memiliki tidak hanya pengetahuan umum, tetapi juga memiliki kepribadian dan komitmen yang tinggi terhadap agamanya. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada Masyarakat berupa pelatihan berbahasa Inggris dan integrasi nilai-nilai Islam dalam pembelajaran. Pengabdian ini berdampak positif terhadap peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris dan integrasi nilai-nilai Islam dalam pembelajaran guru-guru MI Assalam Kota Manado.

Abstract

The purpose of this service is to improve the ability of MTs Muhammadiyah students to master basic English skills for daily communication using the Daily Conversation method. This activity is carried out once a week, starting from 12 August to 30 November 2019, at MTs Muhammadiyah Singkil District, Manado City. The results obtained from the activity are the ability of MTs Muhammadiyah students in daily communication in English has been quite fluent. This method is preferred by students because the material taught is related to expressions used daily. Students are enthusiastic during learning activities, but several things still need to be improved, namely motivation and confidence to use English in daily conversation.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan mengenalkan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab Dasar melalui media bergambar pada siswa RA Al-Ikhlas Watudambo Desa Kauditan II Kecamatan Kauditan, Kabupaten Minahasa Utara. Diharapkan dengan adanya pengabdian ini bisa menambah pengetahuan siswa mengenai Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab, serta memperkaya guru tentang metode pengajaran kosakata Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab dengan menggunakan media gambar. Partisipan yang terliubat dalam pengabdian ini adalah 25 siswa. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa media gambar dapat digunakan dalam kegiatan pengenalan kosa-kata Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab pada anak usia dini di RA Al-ikhlas Watodambo

Abstract

Abstrak Debat Bahasa Inggris merupakan keterampilan yang dibutuhkan untuk mengikuti kompetisi dan meningkatkan percaya diri dan berfikir kritis siswa dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris di area umum. Namun, kendala yang dihadapi sekolah yakni kurangnya sumber daya manusia (guru) yang memiliki kapasitas untuk mentransfer ilmu dan pengalaman mengenai debat Bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, tim PKM TBI IAIN Manado menginisiasi program pelatihan debat Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa MTs Assalam Manado yang dilaksanakan selama 5 pertemuan, dari tanggal 11 November – 17 Desember 2019. Sebanyak 25 siswa terlibat dalam program ini. Hasil dari kegitan ini dapat dilihat dari peningkatan motivasi, percaya diri, dan berfikir siswa dalam debat Bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci : Pelatihan, Debat Bahasa Inggris, Siswa MTs.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah untuk memberi pendampingan pada pola pembelajaran Muallaf dan Muallafah pada organisasi MMS (Majlis Muallaf Sulut) Kota Manado. Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini berlokasi di Teras Aula Masjid Ahmad Yani, tanggal 2 Januari – Juni 2022. Metode pelaksanaan dilakukan melalui beberapa tahap seperti persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Peserta dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini sebanyak 15 orang. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa pola pembelajaran mualaf dan muallafah pada organisasi MMS (Majelis Muallaf Sulut) Kota Manado yaitu bersifat terbuka dan transformatif, dimana tim pengabdian melibatkan metode yang disesuaikan dengan kondisi dan kebutuhan para mualaf dan muallafah seperti metode ceramah, metode tanya jawab, metode latihan, metode diskusi, metode problem solving dan metode demonstrasi. Merupakan salah satu feedback, wawancara dengan anggota organisasi memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap perubahan sikap, pengetahuan dan keterampilan mereka dalam belajar Ajaran Islam. Kegiatan Pk Mini terlaksana secara tertib dan responsif dari semua peserta

Abstract

E-learning has always been a need for everyone. It develops to be utilized since Covid-19 attack. For this reason, many parties including Education attempts to involve applications in E-learning materials. Teachers, in particular required a lot of methods to apply teaching and learning materials through online materials. Within this case, this community service aims to train teachers in using and applying E-learning applications into the classroom. The following community service was accomplished in several schools located in Manado city, such as SMP Yapim, MTs Assalaam, Mts Al Muhajirin. The subjects were teachers from the following schools who have been teaching during covid-pandemic. This activity was held during one month. The results say that the teachers feel motivated, improved and getting understood to have an easier method to use E-learning application such as Edmodo and Google Classroom for their Classroom. The tools in those applications are useful, for instance, to perform an understanding about how to use formula in Math, how to express ideas in English, how to write an assignment in History, and how to learn sufficiently and properly. In the meantime, students are also conveyed grateful and enjoyable to use google classroom and Edmodo application. However, factors such as do not have and have limited smartphone, internet network, and the late to access the apps can be said as the problems found during the service by the team.
