Abstract

In communication, commissive is a kind of speech acts that commit a speaker to do some future action. People should have the ability to produce and understand sentences which are appropriate in order to communicate effectively. The aims of this study are to analyze the candidates’ utterance and the candidates’ visual expression, and also to explain the roles of power and social distance in the debate. Qualitative method is applied in this study. There are five instruments which are used in this study, such as observation, recording technique, Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) theory, Navarro and Karlin’s (2008) theory, and Trosborg’s (1994) theory. The collected data are especially in form of words, sentences, or pictures. The findings showed that there are six types of commissive speech acts used by two candidates, namely promise, assure, threaten, guarantee, offer, and refuse. It indicated that the most common commissive speech acts found is a promise. In addition, the second findings presented that there are seven types of visual expressions by two candidates, such as putting the hand in the pocket, tongue-jutting behavior, furrowed forehead, arm-distancing, palms-up, interlaced fingers, and hand-steepling. The most dominant visual expression by two candidates is palms-up. It meant that the candidates wanted to be believed or wanted to be accepted. The last findings explained that power (status) and social distance. They had equal status in power, had different perception, and had a space line in the debate. Hence, this study can be used in pragmatics class for language learners, especially they will apply appropriately commissive speech acts for the purpose of persuading voters or audiences in communication.

Abstract

Abstract The aim of this research is to improve students? vocabulary, especially in understanding and writing past form. This research was conducted at the ninth grade students of MTsN 1 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. In this research, the subject is class IX C that consists of 39 students. The researcher conducted a classroom action research. The data were collected by using direct and measurement technique. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note, and test. Crossword puzzle was used as the technique in this research which was conducted in two cycles. The research findings showed that the mean score of students? vocabulary test in the first cycle was 71.57 and the second cycle was 86.41 which means it successffully passed the KKM. The improvements of this study were particularly in students? understanding past form and writing their sentences in simple past tense correctly. Abstract

This paper is about theme and rheme in the text of short story as approach using a Functional Grammar. The aims of this study are to identify theme and rheme, to classify the types and components of theme and to describe the correlation both theme and text development. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The data is taken from a short story entitled Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault. The data were analysed using some theories based on a Functional English Grammar. The findings of the research are there are two types of theme (Topical and Textual Theme) that could be found while Interpersonal theme couldn’t be found in the data. Moreover, the components of theme in the category of textual theme are conjunctive adjunct, conjunctive, structural, continuative and conjunction. Meanwhile for topical theme, the components of theme are as subject and marked topical theme (adverbial as theme). To know the correlation theme and text development, the researcher has identified and classified the text of short story. Therefore, in the Theme-Rheme structure of a text clause by clause, to gain an insight into its texture and understand how the writer clarify the nature of his underlying concerns.

Abstract

This research is about an analysis of cohesion and coherence in written text of line today about wedding Kahiyang Ayu and Bobby Nasution. It is aimed to analyze the term of cohesion and coherence in the following text. The descriptive analysis is used as the methodology. The data source is from Line Today. Through the text the researchers found the lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and rhetorical cohesion in cohesion analysis. The text also involving the Micro-Level Coherence and Macro-Level Coherence. In conclusion, the result of analysis showed that the text is cohesive but not coherent enough. Abstract

Pada masa era globasisasi, Teknologi menjadi kebutuhan sebagai penunjang pekerjaan contohnya untuk lembaga pendidikan, salah satu yang dapat memanfaatkan teknologi seperti website adalah lembaga pendidikan Bimbel Dharma Putra, penyampaian informasi selama ini menggunakan cara yang konvensional yaitu dengan cara membagikan berita di whatsapp grub, social media, bahkan mulut kemulut. Padahal dengan memiliki website pribadi dapat mempublikasikan profil lembaga, dan informasi seperti jadwal, biaya, kelas dan informasi lainnya secara lebih baik dan dapat memberikan nilai tambah di mata masyarakat. Selain itu untuk meningkatkan kualitas para guru pengajar tentunya bimbingan belajar dharma putra juga memerlukan pelatihan untuk meningkatkan skill dan kemampuan mengajar dari pengajar yang ada di bimbel tersebut, maka dari itu diperlukan sebuah website untuk promosi dan diperlukan pelatihan micro teaching untuk pengajar di bimbel dharma putra, adapun metode yang digunakan yaitu dengan memberikan pelatihan dengan tujuan apabila memiliki website maka dapat mempromosikan dan menyebarkan informasi dengan lebih baik, dan kemampuan para pengajar menjadi lebih meningkat.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to describe the students’ improvement in reading comprehension by using pre-questioning. This research was a classroom action research with two cycles conducted to the seventh-grade students of MTS Darussalam Sengkubang. The 7B class was the subject of this research consisting of 29 students. Planning, acting, observing, and reflecting consisted in each cycle. Field notes, observation checklists, interview, and individual test were used as the tools to collect the data. The finding of this research showed that by conducting teaching and learning reading by pre-questioning as a brainstorming activity before read the text could stimulate and allowed the students predict by kept trying to answer the pre-questions given by the teacher. Students tried to found the information asked to them. Thus, the pre-questioning activity made the teaching and learning process of reading was interactive. It also affected the students’ motivation in reading learning process. It was effective and very helpful for the teacher in teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

This article focused on the gender differences in English Language Learning. It discovers students’ learning styles as affected by the notions about men’s and women’s differences in communication. The data were randomly collected from ten male and ten female students of the English department of Tanjungpura University Pontianak. The population was the third-semester students of English department students. They were given an online questionnaire through Google Form. It is to find out their attitudes towards speaking to a different gender, strategy to express an opinion, group work preferences, and activeness/passiveness in the class. The findings showed some factors affect the different styles of female and male students in learning English. The result of the data indicated that more females felt reluctant to speak English to a different gender. Besides, it can also affect the successful strategies of English students in learning English. The great potency of female students to be ashamed, nervous, and women’s language can affect their achievement in English. Meanwhile, male students as influenced by their need to challenge and maintain strength as men and can use speaking English ability as a way to show their status as men.

Abstract

Abstract- This research purposed to describe the students' improvement in vocabulary by using word search puzzles. This was classroom action research with two cycles conducted on the first semester students of Bina Sarana Informatika Pontianak University consisting of 40 students. This was the classroom action research. Planning, acting, observing, and reflecting were conducted in each cycle. Field notes, observation checklists, interviews, and individual tests were used as the tools to collect the data. Qualitative and quantitative analysis would be used to analyze the data. The finding of this research showed that the use of word search puzzles could build the students' motivation and decrease students' reluctance to find a new vocabulary. It also experienced students to identify the word which allowed the students to have a better understanding of vocabulary. The word search puzzle led the students to build brains by finding the hidden word and improving vocabulary mastery. It was an effective way for the teacher in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

Pembangunan kesejahteraan sosial yang merupakan bagian integral Pembangunan Nasional dan Daerah memiliki penanganan secara khusus terhadap pembangunan lainny. Karateristik setiap masing-masing program memiliki tingkat pelaksanaan yang berbeda-beda, dengan tujuan akhir yang disesuaikan dengan kemampuan dasar kelompok sasaran penyandang masalah. Permasalahan kemiskinan, keterlantaran, kecacatan, ketunaan sosial dan penyim-pangan perilaku, keterpencilan, korban bencana dan tindak kekerasan Masalah yang bersifat primer maupun akibat/dampak non sosial yang belum sepenuhnya terjangkau oleh proses pembangunan Kesejahteraan Sosial. Oleh sebab itu penanganan permasalahan sosial harus terarah dan fokus melalui dinas teknis yang khusus menangani masalah sosial. Unit Pelaksana Panti Sosial Anak yang selanjutnya disebut UPT Panti Sosial Anak (PSA) adalah Unit Pelaksana Operasional Yang Melaksanakan Kegiatan Teknis di Bidang Rehabilitasi dan Pelayanan Sosial Anak. Melihat permasalahan diatas perlua adanya tindakan nyata dari kami sebagai dosen universitas bina sarana informatika yang memiliki tanggung jawab untuk melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat untuk dapat berperan aktif dalam membantu UPT panti sosial anak dalam memberikan peningkatan kemampuan dan life skill bagi anak anak binaan panti sosial anak dalam kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakan Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika Kampus Pontianak.
