Abstract

 AbstractLanguage is purely human and non-instinctive method because language is the most frequently used and most highly developed form of human communication. And language is a distinctly human instrument, although other animals produce sounds and noises, the human language alone is articulated into words and alone is capable of expressing an infinite variety of thought. Languages are not just sets of symbols. They also often conform to a rough grammar, or system of rules, used to manipulate the symbols. The grammar of a language is a complex and highly structured affair because it operates in terms of concepts and categories which have to be defined in the same way. So we need grammar in using English and the understanding about grammar also influences our ability in English. The students of English study program 2017/2018 year, Islamic university of Indragiri are the students who are obliged to use English in almost all subjects. So, the researcher is eager to know their ability to distinguish present participle from gerund can be as a measure and correction for them how far their understanding about English. In conclusion, the students of English study program to distinguish present participle and gerund has percentage, there was 62.02 % the correct answer, while the percentages of the incorrect answer was 37.98 %. From the percentage of the correct answer above can be said that the ability of the 2017/2018 year students of English study program, Islamic University of Indragiri in distinguishing present participle from gerund is good. Keywords: Distinguishing, present participle, gerund.

Abstract

This objective of this research is to know whether Mind Mapping is more effective than Guided Question in teaching speaking for fourth semester of English education study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. In experimental research, the researcher deals with the research instrument of collecting data: (1) giving the pre-test (2) dividing the classes who have Mind Mapping and Guided Question (3) applying the teaching technique to the students (4) giving post test, and (5) analyzing the students’ score to decide the teaching technique whether or not it is effectives. The research findings show that the use of Mind Mapping can affect the students’ speaking ability optimally. It is proved from research findings which t-observed value 3.189 is higher than t-table of 1.671 at the significant level of 5% which means that the Mind Mapping is more effective than Guided Question to speaking ability; therefore it is recommended that the lecturers are suggested to apply Mind Mapping in speaking activity, to be more creative and innovative in using various kinds of interesting teaching technique with accompany the materials.

Abstract

This research is conducted to improve the students’ motivation and speaking ability by using the thematic simulation game. It also purposes to give the general description about the implementation of using the thematic simulation game in the English class and about everything happening in the class. Then, the objectives of this research are to improve the students’ motivation and speaking ability after determining the problem. The method used in this research is classroom action research. This classroom action research concerns with solving the problems by identifying them, planning, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the result of the observation, and revising the plan for the following steps. The research is conducted in two cycles to the first semester students of midwife program at Akbid Husada Gemilang Tembilahan. The researcher taught speaking English using the thematic simulation game. The research data are collected by using techniques of qualitative and quantitative data collection, which include a questionnaire, observation, and test. The result of the research shows that using the thematic simulation game can improve motivation and speaking ability from the first cycle to the second cycle. It explained that the students have good interaction. The students also enjoyed their performance in acting in front of the class. Moreover, they practiced speaking through the appropriate media. In the pre-test, the students’ mean score is 52.4 as the beginning of the research and it has improved during the research. As has been explained, the lowest point was 50 and the highest point was 72 in the first cycle and the lower point was improved into 60 and the higher point was 86 in the second cycle. It means that there is also the improvement in speaking ability.

Abstract

So we need a grammar in using English and an understanding of the grammar also influences our ability in English. The students of Law Faculty 2018/2019, Islamic University of Indragiri are the students who are studying English in the first and second semester. So, the researcher is eager to know their ability to identify preposition of time in the sentences. The study focuses on the students’ ability in identifying preposition of time in a sentence especially “on, in, and at”. The number of the first semester of Law Faculty consists of three classes and the total of the students are 118 students. The populations are more than 100 students, so the researcher used a random sampling technique. The researcher can take the sample about 15% to 25% or more like the sample and the researcher take half of 100% is 50%. So, the samples of this research are 69 students. The researcher used a quantitative method to get the data needed. The research instrument in this research is to test and fill in the blank forms. The researcher used a sentence without preposition as the instrument of this research, because the students learned preposition through sentences. Based on the result of the test, the mean score of preposition was 63.98. It was categorized at a good level, which included in the interval 61-80. Where there are 6 students get in a very good score, 26 students get in a good score, 36 students get in enough score, 1 student get the poor score and there is no get in a very poor score. In conclusion, the students of Law Faculty 2018/2019 in identify preposition categorized nice and understand in the preposition.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Reading is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by language learners. Through reading, they enable us to gain the information needed. Moreover, the purpose of this study is to investigate how the students' ability in using pictures on reading descriptive texts. The research design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. The population in this research was 10th grade of MA Sabilal Muhtadin Tembilahan, the population was group or cluster as classes. The sampling technique was a purposive sample. The students’ mean score was 63, it can be seen 6 students in interval 81-100 with category is very good, or with presentation (15%), 16 students in interval 61-80 with category is good, or with presentation (41%), 13 students in interval 41-60 with category is enough, or with presentation (33%), and 4 students in interval 21-40 with category is poor, or with presentation (10%)and 0 students in interval 00-40 with category is Very poor, or with presentation (0%). In conclusion, the overall students' ability in using the picture was good.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery as the independent variable and speaking ability as the dependent variable. The sample of this study were 38 students of eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Gaung Anak Serka. The research method used in this study was a correlation study. The researcher gave tests of vocabulary and speaking ability to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of students' vocabulary mastery is 42.7, it was in the very low category, and the average of students' speaking ability was 36.5, also in the very low category, it was in the range 00 – 49. Based on those findings, the researcher analyzed the relationship between the students' vocabulary mastery and speaking ability using the Pearson Product Moment formula, the results was 0.339 it was classified as low correlation. Then to test the hypothesis, the researcher compared the values of rxy = 0.339 and rtable = 0.2709 (5%) and 0.3202 (1%). In short, 0.2709 < 0.3393 > 0.3202. Meanwhile, the SPSS result has also proven that the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.037, which was less than 0.05. Dealing with the results, it could be determined that Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected, and H1 (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there is a positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. If students have good vocabulary so that they will have a good speaking ability.

Abstract

Motivation is a factor which important in do something. For the Students, motivation is one factor that influences the teaching-learning process in the classroom. This time, motivation is a factor that becomes a problem for the students SMPN I Enok. This problem is the background of the problem in this research. To solve the students' motivation in the English classroom, the researcher conducted the experimental research with a quasi-experimental design with applying the English song as a warming-up activity to solve the problem. This research aimed to know the effectiveness of using English songs as a warming-up activity to enhance students' motivation in the English classroom at the eighth grade of SMPN I Enok. The data collection technique in this research was a questionnaire, and the instruments were 15 Close Ended statements using the Likert Scale type. This research sample was 50 students of the eighth-grade SMPN I Enok as a control and experimental class. After getting the data using the questionnaire, the researchers found that English song as warming up activity was useful to enhance students” motivation in English classroom with the result t-observed was 19,85 while t-table was 2,01 from 5% and 2,68 from 1%. The t-observed score was higher than the t-table. Based on the result, H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected, and H1 (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. It also means that English song as warming up activity was sufficient to enhance students' motivation in the English classroom at the eighth grade of SMPN I Enok in academic years 2018/2019.
