Abstract

Aquaporin-5 (AQP5) is a water channel protein expressed on the apical membrane of serous acini in salivary gland. Previous study have shown that the level of mRNA AQP5 is decreased in irradiated rat that result in decreased salivary flow rate; however, the mechanism has not been reported. It’s maybe due to presence of free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of antioxidant on level of mRNA AQP5, salivary flow rate and F2 Isoprostane level (as biomarker of oxidative stress) on salivary gland of rats irradiated with g rays. All experiments were performed using Male Wistar Rat (Rattus Norvegicus, ages 3-4 month, weight 200 – 300 g) were randomly divided into 2 groups: the experimental group and the control group. Twenty two rats were irradiated with single dose (10 Gy) of Co60 Gamma rays at ventral surface at their neck. Before irradiated, the experimental group (11 rats) were given 0.5 mg Astaxanthin® for 4 days but not the control group (11 rats). Saliva secretion, saliva flow rate, and blood were collected after 24 hours. After that, submandibular glands were extirpated for analized mRNA AQP5 using Real Time-RT PCR. Level of F2 Isoprostane was analyzed by ELISA. Using independet t-test showed that mRNA AQP5 level and Flow rate saliva were significanly increased at experimental group (p<0,05), plasma F2 Isoprostance level were significanly decreased at experimental group (p<0,05). Pearson correlation test demonstrate a strong correlation between levels of AQP5 mRNA with levels of F2-isoprostane, mRNA AQP5 levels with salivary secretion, levels of mRNA AQP5 with salivary secretion rate, levels of F2-isoprostane with the salivary secretion, and the levels of F2 -isoprostane with salivary secretion rate. Using regression test showed a significant influence of level F2 Isoprostane toward the levels of mRNA AQP5 and the levels of mRNA AQP5 toward differences of salivary flow rate on submandibular gland. It can be conclude that antioxidant (Astaxanthin®) increased mRNA AQP5 levels, salivary flow rate and reduce levels of isoprostane F2 at Wistar rat irradiated with gamma-rays.

Abstract

Objectives: To inform and discuss the benefits and harms of low dose radiation. Literature Review: Low dose radiation (LDR) was often used, including for services in the field of dentistry. Several studies have studied this for a long time but the results are still not conclusively agreed. Some researchers found a variety of side effects that are not beneficial to the body, but some found no association with the body damage caused by this, and even some found that LDR has beneficial effects on the body. Conclusion: low doses of radiation cause significant changes in the body, although this condition is met with an adaptive reaction which is considered a beneficial response by the body. Therefore, no matter how small the radiation is given, it will still have an impact on the body so it is better to be wise in its use.

Abstract

Kata kunci: konsultasi dan edukasi, teledentistry , pandemi Covid-19   ABSTRACT Covid-19 is a new type of disease that was first discovered in Wuhan China in December 2019. The outbreak was declared a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, causing changes in the order of life including dentistry. Dental action has a big risk of spreading SARS-CoV2 as the cause of Covid-19 because it has a lot procedures with aerosol and droplet production. This causes many dentist practices to close or only handle emergency treatment. Entering a new era of life during the Covid-19 pandemic, publics needs to be educated on the application of health protocols to prevent the spread of SARS-Cov 2. The purpose of this activity is to consult and educate on oral health issues and health protocols during this pandemic. The methode used is through teledentistry, long-distance communication using the "surbo chat" whatsapp TanyaPepsodent and "dashboard" platform. The results of this activity were as many as 112 people participating in this activity with the most cases being tooth pain and cavities. Most of the participants came from Denpasar City and all participants had never participated in previous teledentistry activities. The conclusion of this activity is that teledentistry can facilitate providing consultation and education to the community during the Covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: consultation and education, teledentistry, the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

Objectives: This research is aimed to compare the accuracy of periapical radiography in detecting periapical radiolucency with that of Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and to assess the additional information that CBCT provides. Materials and Methods: 96 patients with a primary diagnosis of endodontic problem had been studied retrospectively. Each root was examined for the presence or absence of periapical lesions according to the Periapical Index (PAI) Score. Roots and root canals identified through perapical radiography and CBCT were recorded. Additional information from CBCT regarding effects of lesions in cortical bone and maxillary sinus was also noted. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were analyzed. Results: The result showed that accuracy of periapical radiography as expressed by its sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) was 0.65, 0.90, 0.86, 0.75, respectively. Conclusion: Periapical radiography has a low sensitivity in detecting periapical lesions compared to CBCT. CBCT also provides more detailed information that is useful in endodontic treatment.

Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontal tissues initiated by increased proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α due to the induction of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). This study aimed to analyze the effect of vitamin D (cholecalciferol) on TNF-α serum level in Wistar rats stimulated with Pg to induce periodontitis. Twenty-seven male Wistar rats (n = 27) were divided into three equal groups. Group I was healthy Wistar rats that received 2000 IU vitamin D once a day. Group II was Wistar rats stimulated with Pg and received 2000 IU vitamin D, while group III was Wistar rats stimulated with Pg but did not receive vitamin D. Blood was collected through the orbital sinus and centrifuged to get the serum. TNF-α serum levels were assessed using Elisa method on the 7th, 14th, and 28th. The data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The mean TNF-α data was analyzed for differences between groups using the one-way ANOVA and LSD post hoc test. Significant differences were seen in group II (418.49 ± 161.08 ng/mL) and group III (172.16 ± 104.18 ng/mL) on the 28th day (p = 0.001). The findings suggest that vitamin D inhibits the TNF-α serum level in Wistar rats stimulated with Pg on the 28th day.
